So I guess those rumors about the Sox looking to move a reliever weren’t media created after all.

Seems unlikely to have much of an impact to this years team, IMO. Schreiber looked pretty rough down the stretch, and Sandlin has great strikeout numbers.

Opens up a roster spot? Maybe another move coming?

Dude had 80 K's to 13 BB's in A ball last year in 58 innings of work. Little bit of a long ball issue, though. Only 22 years old.

Not sure I love giving up all the team control on Schreiber, but Sandlin seems like a live arm, at least.

Moving this here from rumors thread, as posted by @HangingW/ScottCooper

Sandlin was 20th on Baseball America's Royals prospect rankings

Ht: 6'4" | Wt: 215 | B-T: R-R
Age: null
BA Grade: 45/High

Track Record: Sandlin was a successful pitcher at Eastern Oklahoma State JC before transferring to Oklahoma in 2022, where he started for a Sooners team that reached the College World Series. The Royals signed him to an above-slot $397,500 bonus that year in the 11th round. Sandlin was dynamic in his full-season debut in 2023, striking out 79 and walking 13 in 12 starts for Low-A Columbia. He was promoted to High-A Quad Cities on June 23 and made a pair of starts before a lat injury ended his season. Sandlin’s 25.5 K-BB% ranked 11th among minor league starters with at least 50 innings.

Scouting Report: While he has a four-pitch mix, Sandlin relies most heavily on the mid-90s fastball that touches 97 mph and has above-average ride. Sandlin’s preferred secondary is a mid-80s slider with horizontal break and high spin rates. He also throws a low-80s curveball with two-plane break and bite, and he mixes in a changeup that breaks like a splitter as well. He’s still refining his arsenal--especially his secondaries--so there’s a chance they continue to improve. The fastball and slider are above-average offerings right now, and some believe he may profile best in the bullpen, where he can dominate with those pitches alone.

The Future: Sandlin is a sleeper who could take a jump forward in 2024 if he improves the rest of his arsenal. He should begin the year with High-A Quad Cities.

Scouting Grades Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50

Schreiber had a 4.52 FIP last year, which is kind of amazing, because it suggests the Sox defense helped him last year. Kinda hard to believe the D helped any pitcher.

Red Sox fans are gonna be thrilled getting David Sandlin. Saw him a lot in Columbia this year. Very strong arm with a big riding fastball. Can’t wait to see what the Red Sox dev can do with him. Here’s my report

probably won't matter, but this trade doesn't make any sense for KC.

- KC isn't good.
- Sandlin might be a big league starting pitcher in a few years.
- Schreiber is fine RP, but he'll be 30 in a few weeks, has had one season that would justify this trade, and it wasn't 2023.

Turns 23 on 2/21/24. Spent last year in A (12 starts - 58.2 IP, 3.38 era, 12.1 k/9, 2.0 BB/9) and High A (2 starts, 8 IP, 4.50 ERA).

Per Fangraphs:
55/55 Fastball
50/55 slider
54/55 splitter
30-50 command
40+ FV

Feels like this was a way to acquire a nice pitching prospect while also clearing a 40 man spot rather than just cutting someone they like.

I expect a signing shortly

Lefties absolutely crushed Schrieber last year. I don't hate the idea of selling on him and filling the roster spot with someone with options.

Gut reaction by many will be Red Sox are selling and/or cutting payroll, but getting a top 20 arm for a 6th/7th inning guy is a terrific bit of business. Schreiber was what, Sox' 5th best reliever?
A former MLB scout texted me as I was writing this to say Sox fleeced KC here.

For those wondering, Schreiber is set to earn $1.175 million in 2024 and has 3 years of control remaining. Essentially his money is about the same as what they gave Criswell in free agency. Sandlin seems to be a lottery ticket SP prospect with a live arm.

Looking at just numbers, I kind of feel the same way. My eye test has been telling me for two years that Schreiber was going to absolutely fall off a cliff at some point, and the numbers (FIP, etc) sort of back that up. I think a lot of people are still biting off on his weird 2022 season, which seems to be a bit of an outlier. He's also going to be 30 soon, so it isn't like we can reasonably expect him to continue getting better.

Clearing a 40 man spot without losing someone for nothing is a nice bonus, IMHO.

My takeaway is that it opens a BP spot for one of Houck and Whitlock- both of who will be better than Schreiber there…. Which creates an opening in the expected rotation…. Right?

Yes, in my humble opinion. It's that or it clears the way for Mata and Slaten....

The fact Sandlin is someone who should move quickly but doesn’t require 40 man protection this season is huge.

Same thought. I anticipate Whitlock will outperform Schreiber this year as well in that 7th/8th inning role.

And I have liked everyone of Breslow's trades thus far. Adding a player like Sandlin, along with Fitts, Weissert, etc., could help with a mid-season trade for a pitcher, since most teams want back a young guy to fill the gap created by the trade. If Sandlin/Fitts/Weissert get off to a great start in the minors, they could fit that role.

Because Schreiber has essentially been found money I have been hoping the Sox would pounce on a deal like this at some point knowing how fickle relief arms can be. I think I had argued for it two deadlines ago even.

Schreiber will not be the difference in this team’s fortunes and the long-term goal is and should be to build the kind of pipeline of arms we have envied from afar for many years that won’t have us constantly relying on big ticket FAs and churning through crap trying to find diamonds in the rough with like 3 roster spots at a time. Use the pitching dev machine to cut your own diamonds.

Relievers are volatile. I’d bet on JS bouncing back this year.
That FIP probably oversells it, but he certainly wasn’t any better than his 3.86 ERA would indicate, and was probably a tick worse.

More concerning, he missed a lot fewer bats last season than he did in 2022 (10.6% SwStr last year, 13.3% in 2022), probably because hitters did a better job laying off his pitches outside the strike zone (which also drove a steep increase in walks). Now that he’s 30 years old and the American League is familiar with him, I wouldn’t expect that to get better. Schreiber is still better than replacement-level, so this year’s team might have been better with him than without him, but not materially so. I’m perfectly happy for Breslow to flip Schreiber for a prospect he likes.

This is exactly correct, Kiley McDaniel had Sandlin 5th (admittedly in a bad organization) when he rated a week ago, he becomes one of BOS's top 3-4 SP prospects immediately.

This is an excellent bit of business.

The Sox trade a “not young” middle relief arm, and someone that either a) won’t be here when the Sox are good again or b) will have one year of control left as a 32 year old middle relief pitcher when they start to have a shot at being good again.

I’m glad someone is in control now that is actually moving pieces that won’t be here when the Sox are (hopefully) a legitimate contender for prospects that might be (No, I don’t consider simply not sucking enough to be with a bunch of other teams that are within 5 games of WC3 at the ASG is a contender, it just means you’re slightly below mediocre and not terrible).

Unlike the Sale and Verdugo deals, I have no Earthly idea why KC would do this, but glad they did.

Sandlin probably slides in as the Sox 4th best pitching prospect between Fitts and Monegro, and my guess is 14th overall between Meidroth and Castro (using Sox Prospects).

Excellent and incredibly logical move.

Hopefully Martin is next…

This is my favorite part of the deal (Houck and or Whitlock to BP)

at first I’m like why would KC do this(giving up a good young arm) but then I remembered they’re need good Pr for the stadium and getting a ready ML pitcher is good for that.

This makes a ton of sense to me. Anyone is competitive in the current AL Central, so this win now move makes sense even for a mediocre Royals team. And meanwhile, we have more RH relievers than we can fit on the roster and need plausible SP prospects desperately.

Selling off a pitcher with 3 years of control for 1 minor league pitcher. Unbelievable.
It does seem sort of unbelievable based on what I’ve read. But for some reason, the Royals did it.
I’ve always really liked Schreiber, but he’s a perfect guy to sell somewhat high on with plenty of comparable replacements available.
Get the live armed starter every time.

Schreiber was worth 0.1 fWAR and is projected at 0.3 this year. He seems pretty fungible to me; frankly he’s a guy I’d often forget was on the team. His 2022 really looks like an outlier.

This looks like a very good move. Schreiber was a good story and seems like a good guy, but I think 2022 was the best season he'll ever have. With two non-optionable guys in Slaten ands Mata (assuming he's not dealt), this might mean Campbell and Weissert both make it.

Meanwhile, the Breslow-Bailey pitching academy needs talent, and Sandlin seems like he's got it.

Totally. And this move is possible because of the previous moves made by Breslow that turned non controllable assets into real RH depth by adding Slaten, Campbell, and Weissert.

Breslow a trades should make people very bullish on his ability to be a competent CBO. They clearly have a vision and are showing aggression and conviction.

As I posted earlier. When you aggregate the three pitching moves of…

Out
Verdugo
Urias
Schrieber

In
Fitts
Slandlin
Campbell
Weissert
Judice

That’s just an incredible haul for very questionable major league assets.

Getting 2 legit starting prospects, 2 MLB proven option-able right handed relievers for 1 year of Verdugo, 1 year of Urias, and 4 years of Schrieber is just great business.

I doubt many other organizations have done was well as Breslow has from a trade perspective.

Go sign Jordan Montgomery please.

If they Rays made this move my immmediate reaction would be “Man, how do they keep getting away with these moves?”

Which means I should be thrilled with it.

Turning Verdugo, Schreiber, and Urias into Fitts, Campbell, Weissert, Sandin, and Justice is really good business. Ton of pitching talent influx without much of any long term value given up.

This is my thought exactly. These are the kinds of move I'm hoping to see from Breslow & company.

Schreiber came on the scene in 2022 as a big surprise because he could throw 94 mph fastballs from a submarine arm slot. His earlier seasons with Detroit showed nothing like that velocity. In 2023 he tore the teres major in his shoulder, and lost 1-2 mph off the fastball. I think it's a reasonable bet that he won't regain it, and without 94 mph, he's just another ROOGY in a game that has devalued OOGYs by forbidding the Madden Shuffle.

And Verdugo was replaced by O'Neil, who fits better with this team and who was acquired by trading some relief pitcher depth that was pretty redundant.

David Sandlin has the ability to be promoted to AA within a month and become the best starting pitching prospect in the system and a top 100 prospect overall. It’s a no brainer
