Steve Belichick went from being the long snapper at Rutgers to a coaching assistant job on his father’s staff in New England in 2012 and his trip up the ladder continued on Friday.

The Patriots announced their coaching staff for the 2016 season and the younger Belichick has been named the team’s safeties coach. Their previous safeties coach Brian Flores will now be the linebackers coach with Patrick Graham leaving the team for a job with the Giants earlier in the offseason.

From time to time in BBtL we've discussed whether the Patriots are a "dynasty." I'm somewhat of a traditionalist regarding dynasties, meaning that you don't have a dynasty unless the reign passes from a father to a child (or the spouse of a child: the Lubavitcher Rebbe - of blessed memory or may he still live and be well, as you may prefer to view him - was the son-in-law of the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, for instance). I'd be so thrilled for Bill Belichick if indeed a dynasty comes about "in the traditional manner," namely if Steve would ascend to his father's throne. Even if one of our current Coordinators steps up for an interim reign while Steve is the prince-in-waiting (perhaps taking a coordinator position elsewhere for a few years), I'll view it as a dynasty at the point where Steve becomes Patriots' head coach.

I still have a lot of respect for the posture that the Patriots are already a dynasty, given their tenure at the top of the heap (spacing between championships is allowed). But if I use the same standard for the team that I use for individuals such as the Belichick clan, I'd view the Patriots as a dynasty if the Brady successor takes the team to a Lombardi Trophy within a couple of years of taking over the QB position.

Wouldn't it be interesting, though, if Amanda Belichick traverses from lacrosse to professional football?

Is there a precedent for a son following his legendary father into NFL coaching, other than the Shula brothers? (I'm aware that Vince Lombardi's grandson had a brief and undistinguished run as the Lions' OC as well.)

I have no doubt he has been learning from his father since he could read.

I guess we can ask "which one?" when told they hate their coach.

The safeties coach comes here from Rutgers. Who could've guessed that.

Since the bulk of the Rutgers defensive backfield was wiped out last fall by various and sundry felony charges, I guess this was the next best thing to keep the Rutgers connection alive and well.
