If this goes the way of the USB flash drive, which it should, we will soon see 128 Gb drives being discontinued.  The industry will set a floor sell price and as costs come down just keep upping the drive capacity they sell at that price.

Yes, something like a platter-based 400GB hard drive rock-bottomed around $50 before manufacturing basically ended.

A new Dell 24" IPS  16:10 monitor U2415   til 10/17 @ 8am EST...30% off  $280

Zero reviews but interesting: thin bezel, light matte, flickerfree LED, Dual HDMI (MHL), Displayport, miniDisplayport, 5 port USB 3.0 hub. Ultrathin bezel, claims 99% sRGB calibrated to DeltaE <3, pixel perfect waranty (no more than 1 bright pixel). If it's all these things it's VERY interesting at this price. Of course Dell does not have a great track record of getting new model perfect out of the gate... also note finally... monitors sans vga input...about time...

Yet another Newegg sale:
http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/Oct-0-2014/Countdown-21/index-landing.html?nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL102114&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL102114-_-EMC-102114-Index-_-E0-_-PromoWord&et_cid=12235&et_rid=2267858

Samsung 840 EVO 120 Gb SSD down to $75.

Fractal Design Core 1000 basic case   $25.

Toshiba (really HGST, now owned by WD) 3Tb 7200 rpm HD  oem  $90  (note the retail versions of this drive have a 3 yr warranty, oem only 2, and hopefully Newegg will package these bare drives decently).

Corsair CX600 PS  after $20 rebate = $35

Rosewill LED illuminated Cherry MX Blue mechanical keyboard  after $20 rebate = $60
The Cherry Blue are light touch with clicky sound, you get dual (green or red illumination)  About as cheap as you will find a keyboard with these features, which makes the one defect all the more stupid: no ability to remember settings: you get to reset color and illumination level EVERY time you reboot.....

of interest:

Standard WD 1Tb Blue 7200 rpm drive   $50
we have reached the floor for such a commodity item, prices will never go lower and I can't imagine we're going to see the abandonment of this size anytime soon.

OCZ 240 Gig SSD   $100
this is the new OCZ "A Toshiba Company", high quality, 3 yr warranty, legit competition to Samsung, Crucial, Intel.

Things to avoid:

HP Pavilion 27xi IPS monitor
looks like a good deal on a 27" IPS monitor, but it's a pure gloss screen so unless you intend to use it in a room with virtually no lighting, you will be very sorry...it's not a great performer either.

Lenovo Thinkpad E545   $400
everyone knows I'm a fan of Thinkpads and everything about this one is just fine...shame they didn't put a real cpu inside...why they keep churning these out with the sadly anemic AMD silicon is a mystery.
Just look at the real world benchmarks here compared with the midpack i5-4200M from Intel.  The overall rating at the top makes them look vaguely competitive, all the real world tests are just...sad.

Lenovo Outlet

at 10:15 am today the Outlet still has 46 Thinkpad E440 with good specs : i5-4200M (2.5 Ghz dual core), Intel 4600 graphics, 1366x768 14" matte screen, 500 Gb 7200 rpm HD, DVD burner, 4 Gb ram, fingerprint reader. These laptops are coming with Win 7 Pro x64 (downgraded from 8.1 which you can have free if you like) These laptops are all BRAND NEW, NOT REFURB.

http://outlet.lenovo.com/outlet_us/itemdetails/20C5S01M00/445

The only issue with the 14" version is no separate numeric keypad on the keyboard. And these all have the M.2 2242 slot to add a tiny SSD which can be a boot drive and really improve performance.(Amazon has the 128 Gig version of these for $70 atm). Without sleep or hibernation tricks I boot to Win 8.1 Pro in roughly 18 seconds (depends on how fast you can type in a hardware password and swipe a finger as it loads) plus I can keep multiple complete images of my boot drive on the HD, which is what you want in a disaster, not a 'recovery option' that simply puts you back with a years old completely unconfigured blank OS.

Price has now dropped to $490...free ship.

Newegg is getting $646 plus shipping for this exact laptop today....

Of note:

Samsung 4Tb external USB 3.0 HD      $110
the weird part is Samsung (Seagates's bargain brand these days) internal  HD never have more than 1 or 2 year warranty... this external has a 3 yr warranty. Just remember any USB 3 drive this size uses a wall wart PS, can't be powered by the USB port.

To avoid:

Dell S2340M 23" IPS monitor    $130
sounds like a decent deal... but 1. glossy screen, will drive you nuts in anything but a really dark room. 2. worse, as I have reported before, Dell not bought from Dell means you get no service tag, and without the tag, Dell will not even speak to you, let alone help you, you effectively have NO WARRANTY whatsoever.

also TODAY ONLY 10/25 Shellshocker deal:

Crucial 8 Gb DDR3 1600 SO-DIMM laptop memory     $65
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148679

totally 'standard' laptop memory ( CAS 11, 1.35v) will work in virtually all modern laptops, lets you get to 12 Gig total memory in most laptops, actually breaks the $70/8 GB price level that has been the floor for DDR3 1600 memory for almost a year now, and so-dimm usually costs more, not less. Note: many laptops are/were spec'ed to 8 GB memory max, this was usually based on the assumption that you have 2 memory slots and nothing above 4 GB so-dimm sticks were available, in 98% of cases your laptop will have no problem recognizing and using an 8 GB stick.

yet another Newegg promo code sale, this time some stuff you have 4days, some just 2:
http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/Oct-0-2014/DarkSideOfEgg-28/index-landing.html?nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL102814&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL102814-_-EMC-102814-Index-_-E0-_-PromoWord&et_cid=12456&et_rid=213639

Everything of note seems to be storage today and mercifully no rebate nonsense:

Hard drives:
HGST (WD) 4Tb 7200 rpm NAS tuned drives, 3 yr warranty and retail boxed which provides MUCH better shipping protection       $165

WD Black 1Tb 7200 rpm drives, outside true Enterprise stuff, one of the last 5 yr warranty drives, approaching the floor price    $70

WD Green 3Tb 5400 rpm drive OEM, 2 yr warranty    $90

Seagate Constellation 2Tb 7200 rpm drive, their Enterprise line: 5 yr warranty OEM     $150

WD Passport Ultra 1 Tb USB 3.0 drive, 3 yr warranty (no idea speed, probably 5400 rpm)     $60    OR   HGST (WD) Touro 1 Tb USB 3.0 drive, 7200 rpm, 2 yr warranty also   $60
There are a gazillion variations of these out there now for dirt, if you operate mostly off laptops, have a USB 3.0 port and no other obvious method to image the laptop drive to a network or elsewhere, it behooves you to own one of these, unless you don't care at all about disaster.

Of note:

Samsung 840 EVO 1Tb SSD is back at $390

Seagate Barracuda 1 Tb 7200 rpm HD is down to the floor price = $50, traditionall HD never drop below this...unfortunately the Barracudas are now only 2 yr warranty, these days I prefer the Toshiba/HGST   stuff at 3 yr for a low end 7200 rpm.

Zalman Ultra Quiet 120mm fans for $1 after rebate (annoyingly you can only buy 1 with the rebate)

OCZ VTX460 240 Gig SSD   $110 and Intel 530 480 Gig SSD   $220

MS Windows 7 Home Premiun SP1 x64   $82

ASUS RT-AC87U wireless router & Motorola SB6141 cable modem    bundle   $290
Asus' current top-of-line router and the SB6141... the 6141 runs $86 new most of the time and the Asus $265

Asus RT-N56U N600 dual band router     $70
  runs $86 most everywhere

Patriot Stellar Boost XT 32 Gig USB 3.0/OTG Flash Drive   after $5 rebate   $15
one of the new breed: one end is normal USB 3.0, other end is micro USB for your phone/tablet etc. Captive rubberized caps, very small, actual decent USB 3.0 speeds...very handy for transfer/storage.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
Trying to figure out if this'll cost too much to upgrade.  $272 shipped at Lenovo outlet.  S is the energy saving version, w very little performance diff from the non-S.  Same box with non-S is $50+ more.  Considered suitable for extreme gaming, for which I dont plan to use it.  An i5 for under $275 is what caught my eye:

  • E73
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-4570s Processor (4 cores / 4 threads, 2.9GHz, 6MB cache)
  • Operating system: Windows 8 Professional 64 - English
  • Display: None - Desktop
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4600
  • Memory: 4 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600MHz UDIMM Memory
  • Hard Drive: 500GB, 7200RPM Serial ATA 3.5" Hard Drive
  • Optical Drive: DVD Recordable Serial ATA

Just went there and it seems to be gone.  You didn't give us a link, but I'm guessing it's the small formfactor version.  The 's' version is underclocked to 2.9 Ghz, the normal 4570 is generally run at 3.2, as in the small tower versions of the E73, overall trivial issue... More importantly the E73 (which seems to be discontinued in the US, btw) only has vga & Displayport video outputs, which could seriously limit your monitor options. You get 1 PCIe 3.0 x 16 slot for better video... but limited to a 40w card and the included power supply will not offer an extra connector for added power to a video card and even if you kluged a splitter to provide this, very iffy if the PS can deliver. The PS is rated for 180w and in this formfactor has far less spare headroom than average.

Here are the full specs http://support.lenovo.com/en/documents/pd029624

The full tower version is a better candidate if you want to add/modify the thing. BTW the fact that the 'details' page at the Outlet neither shows a picture of the back nor includes data on such basic things as a complete list of the inputs/outputs (so you might catch the video out 'gotcha'..) is pretty annoying.

Thanks, the form factor is what scared me, too. Been there, done that.   Got a very nice deal years back from Cowboom on a pair of like-new HP desktops with slimline cases and low wattage PSs.  They more than served their purpose, especially for the price, but it was annoying when I wanted to upgrade.  Good luck finding a decent non-powered half-height video card.

Didnt link it as there was only one unit left.  Nice price if I didnt want to do anything fancy with it and just use it as-is out of the box .

Any thoughts on that SanDisk SSD? Rebuilding my HTPC to be more gaming-friendly and want a solid OS/programs drive.

EDIT: Or would you recommend today's shellshocker, a Crucial SSD?

Yeah I was going to mention the Crucial, but I've pretty much stopped mentioning sales that are only $10 or less, especially since some of this stuff is on sale every week.  The SanDisk has slightly better benchmarks, but I'm partial to the Marvall controllers and the Crucial has a better track record... it's what I'd buy.

Rather little of serious interest, the Gateway DX4485 is a decent i5-4440 desktop for $360 is a good deal, keeping in mind you use it just as it is. You get HDMI & Displayport outputs for the integrated video (and vga as if anyone cares), front panel USB 3.0. The PS is proprietary, as is the mb, the expansion slots are mostly useless since you can't easily power any serious video card. Just understand you're going to maybe add memory and that's it.

A very annoying today ONLY 11/11 Newegg sale:

http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/Nov-0-2014/HolidayGiftSale-11/index-landing.html?utm_medium=Email&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL111114&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL111114-_-EMC-111114-Index-_-E0-_-Give&et_cid=12903&et_rid=213639&et_p1=

Notable:

2x4 Gb HyperX Kingston DDR3 1866 memory   $60    Finally a serious break below the $70/8 Gb price level, but it's not really all that fast as it's Cas 10 at 1.5v, but still plenty good memory.

Intel 530 120 Gb SSD    $65

Dell 2314H 23" IPS monitor   $150   DVI & Displayport inputs but with 2 warnings: are you getting a service tag? without that good luck getting any real warranty. This also uses a panel that reverses the order of the pixel colors (BGR instead of RGB), in Windows this can be corrected for via ClearType tuning which everyone should do in any case, when used with a Mac you have no such option and resulting text is suboptimal.

Acer AXC-605-UR2C mini-desktop i7-4790    $579  i7 Quad core (3.6 Ghz) all you're going to add is memory: 1 Tb 7200 rpm HD, DVD burner, HDMI video out, 200w PS, all proprietary, utterly useless half height PCI-E x1 and x16 slots, powerful and compact used just as -is.

Unless you need it right this second, keep checking back and hold out for the multi-touch screen version of the Lenovo Outlet AIOs.  They often mix in the touch and non-touch models at the same price.

And you sometimes see some AIOs with i3s pop up for a few bucks more.  That's what I'm holding out for for my 13 y/o

The feedback of Xtremeram, the seller in this case, is 23% negative in the past 30 days. I'm going to guess that, at best, these are 'new old stock' and if you input the serial numbers of the drives you receive at the WD site, count yourself lucky if there's even a year left on the 5 year warranty of these drives.

Drives are a commodity. We get sales on the most popular consumer versions of these where there's a large turnover. Enterprise stuff is bought by large enterprises from sources that rarely discount. You can buy this drive everywhere for $160, if anybody has these for much less it's generally either old new stock or it fell out of the normal enterprise channels for one reason or another, often that's a warning that they haven't been handled 'kindly' and the fringe seller has a small quantity they want to dump...I get very leery.

I'm shopping for a gaming laptop for my grandson and found this which is about as cheap as they come.  I'm assuming 3D games are the best and any TV must also be 3D if streaming.  What are the minimum specs for a decent gaming laptop?

If it has to be a laptop, that one is a little weak for real gaming, esp 3D.

Processor
- On a laptop, i5 is dual-core, i7 is dual core with 2 threads per core (ie 4 processes can happen at the same time). Some games take advantage of multithreading, so i7 is preferable.
- Gaming is better on a desktop since i5 is quad-core, and i7 is quad-core with 2 threads per core (ie, 8 processes at the same time). i5 should be fine.
- The best way to determine the raw power of Intel processors (I love AMD, but don't bother) is to compare the first 2 digits of model numbers. I have a laptop with i7-4500, and my new desktop processor is an i5-4590. They are actually comparable.

Graphics
- Refer to this hierarchy chart to determine what's good and what's not in terms of video cards. Mobile cards are there too.
- Ignore all model numbers. They are useless.
- The 820M is not on the above chart, but it is worse than the 560M, for example.
- At least 2 GB graphics RAM is good.

RAM
- More = better
- Nothing less than 8 GB.

Don't have specific computer recommendations, but these notes should point you in the right direction.

Gaming laptop is inherently a trap. Gaming today generally means for the serious: large, larger and multi-monitor setups to get as immersive as possible, fueled by a high end video card which, invariably, becomes considered 'meh' within 14-18 months. This makes gaming laptops obsolete shockingly fast. That said, if your grandson's expectations are realistic (and DO NOT BUY THIS FOR HIM without telling him exactly what you want to get and letting him voice his opinion), the machine in question meets all the minimum requirements for gaming: a decent cpu, decent separate video with it's own dedicated ram.
That said, a desktop assembled with an on-sale around $175 video card will clobber the living shit out of this laptop...here's an example:

The reality is modern video GPUs all require lots of power, run very hot and require serious cooling....all things that no laptop can do. If you put such a gpu in a laptop it would kill the battery in 10 minutes, fry your gonads and sound like a hairdryer.

Yeah. I didn't consider battery life, comfort, portability, etc. All those are pretty terrible in a laptop.

Just for fun, I did a quick and dirty build with a $200 budget for a graphics card and $700 total. It is here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bgpJTW

No monitor, but it would kick that laptop's butt for games. Given time to research and optimize, I bet we could squeeze a couple more things out of that $700 budget. :)

Exactly, a kid who's getting into serious gaming should build a desktop which he can upgrade the video card and monitors..done intelligently he could keep that thru 3 video cards and adding a 2nd monitor and make the setup last 5 years while still playing the latest and greatest with reasonable results.

It's not a bug, it's a feature.
