So far completely underwhelmed by Newegg pre-Black Friday sales.  They are trying to have a sale on the following monitor for  $200, which Amazon blows away by selling for $187 today:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C2ARHSY/?tag=extension-kb-20

This is a real 1920x1200, 24", IPS LED backlit DVI & Displayport monitor. Reading the reviews, apparently Contrast needs to be backed off from factory settings, base assembly is a bit tricky (remove the one screw completely and be sure holes align), and the menu system doesn't allow for easy one button switching between inputs....otherwise a real 1920x1200 modern IPS for under $200 is a hell of a deal.

Newegg continues to disappoint, this "leak" of Black Friday sales is pretty pathetic: Amazon matches or beats most of these deals:

http://www.newegg.com/Official-Black-Friday-Deal-Leak/EventSaleStore/ID-179?utm_medium=Email&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL111914leak&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL111914leak-_-EMC-111914leak-Index-_-E0-_-PromoWord&et_cid=13187&et_rid=2267858

One standout:

G.SKILL 8 Gb DDR3 SO_DIMM 1600    $59
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231704

We seriously break the $70/8 Gb memory floor, better yet this stick is Cas9, 9-9-9-28  and 1.35v which is the current standard for good desktop memory, laptop memory like this is generally Cas11. The result is this stick is likely to work in almost any laptop, makes it easy to zonk any laptop to a great 12 Gb (and will probably work with 95% of laptops that spec to 8 Gb max, the chipsets they use can all handle 16 Gb, when they wrote the spec 8 Gb sticks didn't exist) and can improve performance if you're running only 4 Gb.

S/O already.  And some of those BF "deals" have been bettered in just the past week.

If anyone has a low wattage PSU and you want to upgrade the video: TD has an EVGA 750 2GB Ti PCIe graphics card that comes down to $94 or $84 after all discounts are applied (stackable coupons, rebates, et.)  It's considered the best value mid-gaming card if you want to upgrade low wattage systems, as it draws VERY little power.

Samsung PN51F4500AFXZA 51" 720p 600Hz Plasma HDTV at Sears  $380 store pickup
http://www.sears.com/samsung-51inch-class-720p-plasma-hdtv-pn51f4500/p-05775363000P

Panasonic is gone, the Samsungs are the best left, entry level 51" Plasma at the lowest price seen in quite a while.

Plasma's are all almost gone. Samsung has stopped producing them as well. The very highly rated F8500 series are going for attractive prices right now at Best Buy (the only place I could find that had them in stock at these price points):

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-51-class-50-3-4-diag--plasma-1080p-smart-3d-hdtv-black/8490071.p?id=1218877693027&skuId=8490071

the 51" is only $1000 and the 60" is only $1500.

If you are a plasma devotee and not thrilled that your high-end choice is now going to basically be only early 4K TVs, the time to strike is now - this is basically the ultimate expression of plasma technology and will be gone soon.

Have to post this because, hell just look at that name. I'm going to wager nobody has had any experience with this Korean brand, lord knows the price is low enough for a 27" 2560x1440 S-IPS  with DVI-D, Displayport & HDMI inputs. Gloss screen, apparently from LG. The brand is apparently a startup by former employees of Yamasaki, another Korean brand. Sold on eBay for around $270 plus shipping so $300 is reasonable from Newegg with free ship, Amazon wants seriously more. Newegg has return policies but coy about warranty. Reviews from those who have actually received this monitor are generally quite good

Newegg Black November REFURB FRENZY

Deals of interest:

Lenovo Thinkcentre M91P small formfactor decent quad i5 cpu. 750 Gb HD , use as is,    $300
Note this one comes with a 1 yr warranty, but from the independent refurber.

HP Envy 700-214 or HP 8100 both have good quad i5 cpu, 12 or 8 Gb ram, 1 or 2 Tb HD both are respectable minitowers    $360 or $475

The Lenovo Thinkpad T410 laptops look tempting at $270-290 but the reviews are split between "I got a great almost new looking laptop" and "I got an abused piece of broken junk"... how lucky are you feeling ?

Razer Blackwidow Ultimate mechanical keyboard   $70  This uses their 'clone' of real Cherry switches, still one of the lowest price illuminated mechanical switch keyboards.

The Asus RT-AC66R Dual Band AC1750 router    with promo code $98   This is highly problematical: refurbed by Asus themselves, one of their highest end models at a great price. The problem is close to
50% report, they didn't get a working router and the warranty is only 90 days. Now in some cases, this is just people without an understanding of the newest bands, in many cases they were able to 'fix' their router by switching to open source firmware like Tomato, others had minor issues interfacing to their ISPs. Best to know what you're doing if you consider one of these.

Newegg today:

First a Shell Shocker   TODAY ONLY:

Intel 730 240 Gb SSD    $110     http://www.newegg.com/special/shellshocker.aspx?utm_medium=Email&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL112114&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL112114-_-EMC-112114-Index-_-MECH-_-ShellShocker-LB2C
Using an Intel controller and nand from their true enterprise drives, this is a very fast 5 yr warranty drive specifically tuned for use in pairs in RAID 0, which produces ridiculously fast benchmarks. With top brand
SSDs like these available at these prices, there's really no reason to even look at lesser names

Today's promotions:
http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/Nov-0-2014/Allstar_BF21/index-landing.html?utm_medium=Email&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL112114&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL112114-_-EMC-112114-Index-_-E0-_-PromoWord&et_cid=13223&et_rid=2267858&et_p1=

WD Black2 Hybrid 120 Gb SSD & 1 Tb HD     $150
WD tries to go the hybrid route, a single package that includes a 120 Gb SSD and a 1 Tb 5400 rpm HD.  The reviews show the software and install have issues, when it works it lets you pack a combo into older laptops where there is no other option and the price is reasonable...if it works.

ASUS RT-N56U   $70  One step down good quality N600 router, $88 pretty much everywhere else.

Gateway KX2703bd 27" 1900x1080 monitor   $160
Ultra cheap 27" 16:9 monitor, DVI-D ONLY (well vga but who cares...) uses an LG VA panel (variation on IPS), you're not going to do 27" with wide viewing angles any cheaper.

Patriot & Team 16 Gb (2 x 8) DDR3 at prices that continue to break our $70/8 Gig floor. The Team is $125 for bog stock 1600 (slow 10-10-10-27 @ 1.5v), the Patriot is faster 2133 but, like most fast memory, with looser timings (11-11-11-30 @ 1.5v) for $137. Both have sensible low profile heatsinking so they will fit.

Intel 730 480 Gb SSD,    $200
the bigger brother of the Shell Shock drive above...Amazon wants $290 for this today...

OCZ ARC100  120 Gb SSD    $60
...a Toshiba drive, I repeat when brands like OCZ, Intel Samsung and Crucial are available at these sort of prices, just ignore all the lesser brands.

Corsair CX500 PS   after $20 rebate = $30

The server has had issues for 2 weeks, often refused to load any data, they now have finally cleared up their issues. Nothing interesting in price or quantity for laptops.

H530 desktops    $442
i5-4460 (3.4 Ghz), Intel 4600 graphics, 8 Gb ram, 1 Tb 7200 rpm HD,  HDMI video out, DVD burner, Gigabit Ethernet, b/g/n wireless. you have a single PCI-E x 16 card to add a better but low power video card. Biggest annoyance: USB 3.0 ports are only on rear.  Listed as "Redistributed"..wtf ? apparently new. At 10 AM EST they have 40 of these.

Tiger Direct coupon sale (today only?)

AOC M2870VHE 28" 1920x1080 16:9 MVA monitor    $180
MVA is another wide angle variation similar to IPS, with somewhat less glow generally.  DVI-D and HDMI inputs. Understand 1920x1080 on a panel this large means the pixel pitch is going to be large, OK unless your setup has you only 2 ft from the screen. Reviews have been above average for this price range.

OK, the CX line is their 'constructor's line" ie: low end for volume builders: all bronze, not modular. That said, the color ratings are all ratings of efficiency (which has been made a fetish in the industry) which doesn't matter all that much.. quality = regulation, line filtering and response under load. In general gold or platinum gets you better and more sophisticated designs that deliver on the quality...on a low end or medium build is a Corsair CX model 'good enough'...absolutely. Their Bronze all meet reasonable requirements, as opposed to a lot of 2nd tier brands, which are on the ragged edge. CX also means the important caps inside are all probably Teapo, a good 2nd tier brand, not Rubycon, Panasonic or other top line Japanese caps...so 6 years down the road the failure rate may be a few % points higher. Let's put it this way... Corsair CX models are still considerably better than the OEM supplies used in ANY Dell, HP or Lenovo consumer grade desktop.

I have a CX bronze and it's definitely modular.  The key is whether you get, say, the "CX 500 Bronze" or the "CX 500M Bronze"--the "M" versions are modular.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ALYORA4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 is the 430M, for instance (see the full title and description).

Modular saves you space and gives you more flexibility, but it's not a huge deal if you don't have a tiny case.

ahh yeah when initially offered the CX line didn't include modular models. Where space to bundle extra cables doesn't matter it can be argued that non-modular is long term more reliable: less solder junctions, connectors to oxidize etc. but the average desktop is not subjected to vibration or corrosive environments where this is likely to make any practical difference. The only practical difference I've ever seen is that 2 years later, when someone wants to add something to their box that requires a new connector...most of my friends can't find the extra modular cables for love or money...

So many 240gb and 480-512gb deals out there right now, its tough to choose (newegg app/google wallet combo is taking an additional $15 off, which sweetens everything).

And as I understand it, they won't lower the price point much more, but will instead increase the capacity to maintain the price point.

as with hard drives, the floor always seems to be $50.  Going from 120 to 240 Gb for a boot drive the cost increase is becoming trivial. For those of us who keep all data and files elsewhere, what's really the point of a .5 or 1 Tb boot drive ?

BTW, if you order thru the Newegg app and use Google checkout, it takes $15 off a $50+ purchase.  Item has to be sold by Newegg, once per email acct, and the offer won't work if any coupon code is needed for the item's sale price.  Valid til Dec. 4, or sooner if they run out of funds.

I'm this close to pulling the trigger on it, but for reference: on BF TD will have an OVC Vector 150 500g for $149.  Hoping that causes a few sites to flinch and drop their prices even more.  Supposedly last year, Newegg blinked and had some tremendous prices on components on Cyber Monday

Just make sure the model is from the 'new' OCZ line and is Toshiba stuff, there's still more than a little of the old OCZ product out there, and while OCZ will stand behind that product, it doesn't change the fact that a lot of that was crap which is what drove the company into bankruptcy.

This freefall of SSD prices is fun.

I need to get a gift for a distant family member, looking for a new laptop with an internal DVD drive. Basically the lowest price level, don't want to go past $250, so even a Celeron  or AMD is fine. Obviously I would want to get as much of a machine as possible. So far I've ID'd a Toshiba at Amazon (with Celeron) and Walmart (with AMD) 500gb HDD, 4rb RAM, etc for 250 and a similar Asus at Bestbuy for 200. It isn't easy to identify stock these days with optical drives...any ideas? Oh and preferably something I could have in hand before the end of this month.

Yeah they have a quantity of stuff they are now listing as "redistributed" sans explanation. Best guess is these were allocated to or returned from a distributor without ever being sold, and are therefore really new stock.  I actually saw a few laptops yesterday that, when you looked closely, came loaded with Windows 7.0 Pro..... Russian edition, they did not specify if the keyboard on these was Cyrillic.

People should just be aware that the i3-4150 is just a Dual Core cpu, so to many of us, this is just  a laptop cpu put in a desktop box.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
Staples just shut down a good one (someone at corporate goofed big time):  iPad Airs were scanning $100 off, PLUS there was a $100 coupon on top of that.  It lasted from Sun AM until just  a few minutes ago. Reports now have them scanning at full price

16gb were 199, 32gb were 249.  Snagged a 32 just as my Staples opened this AM, as did the customer in front of me.

There are too many SSD deals right now.  I am paralyzed by all the options and the prospect that prices will continue to crash all week.

Just make sure you're aware that this has a Russian Keyboard and apparently no Windows license.

Ok, this is pretty sick:

Tiger Direct:

240 GB PNY Optima Series 2.5" SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive & 8 GB PNY XLR8 DDR3 1600 (PC3-12800) Desktop Memory Bundle [tigerdirect.com]
Apply Code: YER147505 at checkout.
Price (after coupon): $179.99 - $20.00 PNY SSD Rebate [highspeedbackbone.net] - $40.00 PNY RAM Rebate [highspeedbackbone.net] = $119.99 AR + Free Shipping

The Hanley on the cake: today only visa checkout takes another $30 off of a $150 purchase.

Unless you don't like rebates, which is understandable.......

There are several "$10 off $100" and "$15 off $100" coupons from TigerDirect available too. Details are here.

Don't be. 120's are going to be $60-70 for the great brands, $100-110 for 240's and 480's at $200...waiting to save an extra 5 bucks will drive you nuts, when you see an Intel, OCZ, Samsung or Crucial that you like (btw all those brands I believe, with the exception of the Intel Cherryville series,  are using controllers that do not play compression games so their specs remain the same irrespective of the type of data) with either a 3 or 5 year warranty as you desire... just buy the damn thing. Prices are NOT going any lower. If, unlikely, any Plextor models join this rush to the bottom, they also have great performance and 5 yr warranties.

Monoprice Black Friday Deals:

http://www.monoprice.com/pages/black_friday_2014?cl=res&utm_source=141123_bfdealsneak&utm_medium=email&utm_content=prebfsneak_banner&utm_campaign=141123_q4_bfdealsneak

These really start on 11/26:

The 27" IPS 2560x1440  for  $300  is the answer to those afraid to buy direct from a Korean company, Monoprice is using A grade panels, you get a real warranty, just be aware I'm pretty sure that price does NOT include free shipping.

Their illuminated keyboard for $67 uses real Cherry Red switches.

Their $184 5.1 home theatre system is decent, more credible than most other low end all-in-one such systems.

Their condenser microphones are excellent quality for the money at all pricepoints and their 16 channel mixer at $238 packs an astounding amount of features into a small package and is surprisingly clean and quiet, have 2 friends who have bought this unit.

Today's price point:  TD has ADATA and PNY Optima 480s in the $150-155 range after rebates and VCO discount (neither of which brand I'd prefer to buy).

Seeing Plextor brings back memories.  My first CDR was a Plextor, and I paid a ton for it.......

FOR 9 HRS ADD PROMO CODE NAFBF14A AT CHECKOUT AND GET EXTRA 5% OFF ORDER, EXPIRES 11 PM EST 11/24

WD 4 Tb Green 5400rpm OEM (bulk) HD    $130

Mushkin 480 Gb Chronos SSD    $170   NOT recommended, this uses a generation earlier Sandforce controller and overall experience has been a bit unreliable, spend a bit more for a better brand.

PNY Optima 240 Gb SSD   after $20 rebate = $70   Same thing in bundles at Tiger. Be aware, this uses a Silicon Motion controller (meh) , has middling specs, worse PNY admits they are using any of 3 types of nand in these, so you can't even be sure you're getting the same product that has been reviewed.... otoh it is dirt cheap.  expires today 11/24.

All sorts of memory at prices below the $70/8 Gig level.

LG Blu-ray Burner for  $35   Does anyone actually burn blu-rays considering the silly prices for the blanks ??

AND A SHELL SHOCKER TODAY ONLY:

Antec NeoECO 620c  620w PS  Bronze+  not modular  after $25 rebate = $30
