So my 10th grade son, who has a semi lucrative weekend job as a soccer referee, is looking at buying this as a big screen computer monitor.

He gets another $25 off if he checks out thru Paypal, so final  cost is $264 tax free delivered::

Thoughts.....?
So, not a review of this specific TV you are looking at, but a look at the perils of using a TV as a PC monitor at all:  here

While it looks like a great deal up front (I am currently sort of in the market for a new PC monitor as well), I am not sure that this is the answer he is looking for (the one review on TD talks about much the same thing as the article I linked to), especially if he is looking for something for gaming.

Some here may have more experience in this than me, though.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
Not really a tech bargain, but:

Amex Offers has a $25 statement credit for a $75 Verizon Fios purchase; looks like it can be used twice PER QUALIFYING CARD.  Hopie paying my bill qualifies as a  "purchase" ( but if not, that new Quantum Gateway router will be coming my way).

EDIT:  It does.  Just paid half with my AmEx and got the email, then paid the other half with my wife's AmEx and got the email.

1) 480gb OCZ/AMD Radeon ssd will be $149 AR AC (unique) at 8am et at Frys.com.

Amd Radeon is the middle of 5 levels/lines of ssds that ocz puts out, and is described as Gaming.
Due to Frys website glitching out on BF, like three people actually got in on this drive at the $149 price.

It's now available for back order (ships by Dec. 15, according to the product page):  $189 - $30 MIR = $159 shipped.  No tax in 40 states (no tax in any northeast states):

http://www.frys.com/product/8259486?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Curious how you all feel this compares with the Crucial M500 480GB which is $159 + tax at Amazon today.

EDIT: delivered at lunchtime, and the mailman just took my rebate submission.  Tempted to order another, as after some research, this appears to be one of the fastest SDDs out there, competing with drives that cost $100+ more.  (every other e-tailer and B&M has this drive priced at $250-290)

Well losing power and/or Internet from Wednesday til late Saturday is one way to avoid the temptation of all the on-line sales...anyway...

TODAY ONLY:

Staples has a decent sale on a strippo 24" 16:9 IPS monitor.  Acer G247HL BD NOT to be confused with the same model without the BD...this only has DVI input and a 1 year warranty (opposed to the regular model that has HDMI too and a more normal 3 year warranty).  But the panel used is decent and it's only  $110.

TigerDirect has a decent TODAY ONLY sale on basically the top-of-the-line Lenovo Thinkpad E540: $600

15.6" screen, i7-4702MQ Quad cpu (2.2 Ghz),  500 Gb 7200 rpm HD, DVD burner, HDMI video out, 6 cell battery.

Full up features, you can add an M2 SSD if you like, just be aware, even with the 6 cell battery, being an i7 Quad cpu, all the extra processing power means battery life will be mediocre.

Looking for a no frills, cheap as possible, laser printer (b&w is fine) if anyone can recommend one. Had the Brother 2240 but getting sick of it, with noise. Wired probably better than wireless.

This is about as no frills as it gets, also about as cheap. We all love the Canon's for their reliability, good stable software and inexpensive all-in-one toner/drum carts (aftermarket 126 carts can be had for under $15 each in multipacks at Amazon...here's one example http://www.amazon.com/greencycle-CRG-126-Cartridges-ImageClass-LBP6200d/dp/B00PGZN9KW/ref=sr_1_20?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1417496871&sr=1-20&keywords=canon+126+toner+cartridge)

That's semi-targeted, and you have to register for it via social media or by opting in in your acct.  BTW, no one has gotten the TD VCO to work yet.

FWIW, looks like the well has gone dry for the most part on all the SSD deals we saw the past few weeks.  OK deals on decent quality smaller drives, and on lesser quality 500gb drives, but nothing earth-shattering, esp not on better quality larger drives.

Sales on almost all computer stuff have gone lame, the only thing still going strong are tons of sales on off brand and really crappy TVs especially in the smaller sizes.

Of note:

Gigabyte GV-N7500c-2gI video card   After rebate til 12/15 = $90  A bit more powerful than the EVGA 750 we recommend for those with underpowered boxes and no easy way to power a video card. Limitations: while short length this is a full height card not suitable for really compact formfactors, it also does require extra 4 pin power but comes complete with a passthru/splitter for an old style 4 pin molex connector, so as long as one of those is inside running to a burner or old HD, you should be OK.

Acer G7 G24HLbid 24" monitor $122  This is the full version of the monitor Staples had on sale last week for $110. That had only HDMI, this version also has DVI input, that had 1 year warranty, this has full 3 years. A good VA (variation on IPS) wide angle (178° x 178°) matte screen 1920x1080. You're not going to find a 24" IPS style monitor for less...and NO FRIGGIN REBATE.

Canon 8280cw Multifunction Color Laser  TODAY ONLY  $152

Thanks.

Granted, but no-contract GSM phones are easy to come by.  CDMA deals are very few and very far between.

And I have to stick with VZW due to their tremendous coverage in NYC and surrounding areas.  (my wife can be 50' below ground in the Tombs at NYP and she still gets 3-4 bars)

Of interest:

Crucial M500 480 Gb SSD   - $181

LG 25UM64-S 25" Ultrawide IPS monitor - $200  Good buy on a curious size, this is a very small 2560 x 1080 (21:9) monitor. You get DVI-D, dual HDMI, Displayport VESA mount, and the reviews are good. At this price a pair of them could be an intriguing option. (Note: for this resolution you need a quality DVI-D cable or Displayport.and while HDMI 1.3 in theory supports this resolution, in practice it's not a standard option, requires custom settings, a high speed HDMI cable and even then often it only works from HDMI output via a cable to the DVI-D input. )

If you're going to do this, do it this year, RS's main remaining source of funding is abandoning them, negotiations have ended. Odds RS will exist next Christmas are vanishing.

Speaking of stores that wont be here a year from now:

Sears is clearing out a bunch of game console accessories.  Many locations havent even gotten around to posting the lower prices.  Key finds are Turtle Beach gaming headphones, which are ringing up at 70+% off (p11, x12, x32, PS4 gold).  Whatever the markdown price is online (sold out long ago) is the price it's scanning at in the stores

Rakuten Refurb Thinkpads

Prior experience reported here is there's around a 70% chance these refurbs are good and clean.
http://us-micro-corp.shop.rakuten.com/p/us-micro-corp/251141459.html?scid=em_Promotional_20141216Dedicated&adid=28914

Thinkpad T430   $304

i5 dual core (2.6 Mhz), 14" screen, 4 Gig ram, 320 Gig 7200 rpm HD, DVD burner, displayport & vga video outs, gig ethernet, a/b/g wifi, smartcard reader, Win 7 Pro x32. 60 day warranty.

This is a modern laptop: you get 2 USB 3.0 ports, displayport video out, there's an mSATA slot easy available via a bottom cover to install an SSD boot drive, they spec only an a/b/g wifi but this is a card easily replaceable with b/g/n & bluetooth if you want (tons of those on eBay very cheap). The downside is the screen is only 1366x768 and there's no separate numerics on the keyboard. If you get a clean refurb, it's a serious business laptop.

Of note:

Acer K242HL Bbid  24" VA Monitor  -  $110
Best value yet on this 24". Acer is strange: they sell here thru 2 divisions; Acer & Acer America which have subtle variations on products. The G7 version I listed last week I'm sure uses the same VA panel (IPS variant) in a package with a different stand and external power, this version has a different base, internal power and all the same features: 1920x1080, DVI, HDMI, Vesa mount, 3 yr warranty, and at the best price yet. A 24" 16:9 at this price makes anything smaller/lesser a silly purchase.

G.Skill 8 Gb (2x4Gb) DDR3 1600 Ram   -  $60
Prices continue to decline, finally. Standard timings @ 1.5V

Toshiba 1 Tb 3.5" HD   -  $45
Notable for breaking below the $50 floor, NO Rebate, a 7200 rpm,  2 yr warranty Toshiba by HGST (Hitachi) and all really WD. OEM bare drive.

WD Black 3 Tb HD   -   $145
No rebate, 7200 rpm, 5 yr warranty.  Best price elsewhere today is $164 @ Amazon.

Webroot SecureAnywhere AV 2015   -   $8
One of my favorites for layered protection, very lightweight, cloud based, many extra features, works well with other AV products, can be used on at least 3 devices (ahem...). Giveaway price.

Samsung 840 EVO 500 Gb SSD   -   $212    NO REBATE crap.

High Risk, lots of rebates, but potentially big savings.

WD Red 3TB Drive for $69.98

1) Read this thread and sign up for Coupons.com offer through TigerDirect to save $10.  The CC you use must match your Visa Checkout CC.
2) Go to TigerDriect and put this WD Drive in Your Cart.
3) Apply Coupon code DBP149935 to get $10 off the WD drive.
4) Add a filler item to get the total after all discounts to >$100*
5) Use Visa Checkout to get $20 off.  If you have already used your VC just create a new TG account and potentially a new VC account.
6) Use this rebate form to get an additional $20 off your order.

So here is the math.

WD 3 TB Drive:             $129.99
WD Discount Code:        -$10.00
Square Card Reader:      $9.99
Visa Checkout Savings:   -$20
Order Total:                   $109.98

Rebates / Credits
Coupons.com Credit        -$10
TigerDirect Rebate:         -$20
Square Rebate                -$10
Total Cost:                     $69.98

*I used the Square Card Reader as my filler because it was FAR and qualified for free shipping.  Many of the filler items you will find will add ~$5 due to shipping.
