If the Yankees flip Verdugo to SD as part of a Soto deal, this place will explode.Verdugo takes with him about 95% of SoSH trade proposal content. What will we do with ourselves now?

I’m in no rush but I also wouldn’t say no if a deal made sense. He’s good enough to generate interest but I also think we could find someone to do the same job for less than 16 million dollars.Again, why are we in a rush to trade Jansen? He was effective in his role, doesn't have an obvious replacement, and allows Cora and the bullpen to have set patterns of usage, which has real world value even though I/we wish it didn't. If the Sox are good, they are going to want to have an experienced closer. If they are bad, they can trade Jansen at the deadline when he would likely have a price tag that matches whatever he could be exchanged for this offseason.
I guess me too since I wouldn't say no to a deal that made sense for any of the players on the Sox right now. Or ever. But there seems to be a lot of posts about trading Jansen and I don't get it. He is effective, on a one year deal, and is probably worth more at mid-season then now.I’m in no rush but I also wouldn’t say no if a deal made sense. First half Verdugo is someone I would have absolutely looked at extending but we never got a full season of that production. I’m fine with moving on and I think there’s a much greater than zero chance that whoever pays up when he hits the market will be getting the next Benintendi.I would have zero interest in extending Verdugo beyond this season. Verdugo is a decent player, but the Red Sox can do better there if they want to spend some money. Plus he a lefty in a lineup with too many other lefties.
So I’m fine with taking a couple pitching prospects to let him be a pain in the ass in their locker room next year.
He’s definitely said stupider things. Would make sense for the Padres if he were included as part of a bigger package for Soto and Grisham.Consider the source, but ...
@JimBowdenGM
Don't be surprised if the #Yankees now try to spin Verdugo in a package with King and Thorpe to the #Padres to try and land Juan Soto ....
I was thinking about his reported Face time call with Boone earlier today…Verdugo as well if you recall his "seven weeks to go" comments.
Trading away hitting for pitching is an all-too-rare phenomenon in Red Sox history. Steady on, CBO!
I think it’s because effective closers on short deals for a big salary are perpetual trade bait. I’d be fine holding onto him as either a contributing piece to a contending Red Sox team or someone to dangle in July but I also think he’s a prime candidate to be a payroll casualty to make room for more exciting additions or just ones that are more cost effective. I digress, though, because this probably belongs in another thread anyway.I guess me too since I wouldn't say no to a deal that made sense for any of the players on the Sox right now. Or ever. That's... not the definition of replacement level.Verdugo is the definition of replacement level. His fwar has been between 1.9 and 2.1 three out of four years when he has played over 100 games. He has been a positive fielder twice and negative fielder twice. His wRC+ has been between 98-112 those 4 years.
He has one year left and wasn’t going to be given a new contract. Maybe if he hit right handed he would have stuck around but the Sox need more balance in the lineup.
Hopefully Breslow and his pitching lab know what they are doing and at least one of the prospects works out. I like the trade.
I am a huge Wilyer Abreu fan. Wouldn’t be surprised if he put up better numbers than Verdugo next year if he gets the chance. Would happily give Verdugo’s money to Adam Duvall.I agree but he is left handed. Do they resign Duvall or another righty free agent outfielder?
You are right. I meant average. Will go change it.That's... not the definition of replacement level.
+1I am a huge Wilyer Abreu fan. Wouldn’t be surprised if he put up better numbers than Verdugo next year if he gets the chance. Would happily give Verdugo’s money to Adam Duvall.
+1The next closest in the system would have been 26 yo Brian Van Belle at 141. Everyone else threw at least 30 fewer innings.
Because that’s not too unlikely a scenario this is a very, very dangerous trade for Breslow. If you think it’s bad now, wait until he goes 30/100/GG next year
As they should, results matter. If this happens, he should receive criticis, just like Bloom did with the Renfoe trade.Because that’s not too unlikely a scenario this is a very, very dangerous trade for Breslow.
A lot of fans are going to want his head on a spike if these prospects go nowhere and Verdugo performs well with NY.
Those were 20 years ago. The voters are better now. Verdugo's defense was great last season by the voting, eye test, and stats. No need to shit on the guy just because he was shown the door.So was Derek Jeter multiple times. And Rafael Palmeiro. Gold glove voting remains baseball's most idiotic and backwards award.
Lol Verdugo's career high in HRs is 13. Yankee Stadium isn't *that* small. And while it's a fairly meaningless stats his career high in RBI is 74 despite getting 544+ AB 3x.Because that’s not too unlikely a scenario this is a very, very dangerous trade for Breslow.

Part of that is that most really successful guys at a level get promoted.Fitts led the Eastern League in an awful lot of categories when you filter to only the pitchers who threw 90 IP or more.
First thing I thought of as well.We didn't even get a 2B out of this? Why
Closes the book on the Betts trade as a massive failure that everyone involved should have follow them to their graves and beyond.
Oh, totally. It helps to be a guy who starts the season at a level and just plays straight through, too, rather than getting promoted in June from high-A or whatever.Part of that is that most really successful guys at a level get promoted.
It's still insane they traded Mookie. I'm not going to relitigate the trade but they traded the best homegrown player since... Boggs? Lynn? Rice? for pennies on the dollar and in the end got nothing for him. It's a goddamn shame and this ownership group -- despite the WS titles -- should never hear the end of it.We didn't even get a 2B out of this? Why

There are many who insist the Sox won the trade, too. It's still insane they traded Mookie. I'm not going to relitigate the trade but they traded the best homegrown player since... Boggs? Lynn? He’s clearly better than Lynn. Unless he falls off a cliff he’s better than Rice (when including defense and speed)It's still insane they traded Mookie. It's Yaz. They traded the third-best Red Sox position player of all-time.It's still insane they traded Mookie. I'm not going to relitigate the trade but they traded the best homegrown player since... Wilyer could be a kind of younger Verdugo type. LHH, half decent speed but not many steals, potentially solid defense but sometimes doesn't look good out there. Wilyer at least has a stronger arm.I am a huge Wilyer Abreu fan. Wouldn’t be surprised if he put up better numbers than Verdugo next year if he gets the chance. Would happily give Verdugo’s money to Adam Duvall.
We still have Connor Wong from the trade. He's decent. Not saying it will happen but if Fitts wins 20 games a couple of times do you consider this trade an extension of the Betts trade? Honest question. We didn't even get a 2B out of this? Why

Looks like he had him as either their 8th or 9th best RP under contract heading into the off season. With Effross and Trivino and Gil and Loaisiga all out basically the whole season so far, plus Cordero suspended, NY's MLB relief depth has been tested and the relief options in AAA are ugly currently, 5 relievers on the 40 man in AAA currently:
1) Matt Krook: 28 year old lefty with incredible AAA numbers, has been called up a few times and mostly ignored, but hit hard when finally used. But just 8 hits allowed in 25.2 AAA innings, I would like to see more of him when needed.
2) Deivi Garcia: Of course first called up at just 21 in 2020, he is now a fringe 40 man guy who has come up for two solid emergency long relief fill-ins for NY this year, but been bad in AAA the whole season (4.74 ERA in 38 innings).
3) Greg Weissert: He has looked promising at times too but his stuff moves so much that he can't really control it. He blew tonight's AAA game by allowing 3 in the 9th in a 10-8 loss, still optimistic but he is also 28 already and unreliable right now.
4-5): Lastly Matt Bowman and Anthony Misiewicz, both recent 40 man additions. I find it hard to believe NY does not have better non-40 man internal options than these two if it comes to that. For instance, Edgar Barclay has been dominant in AA (and high A last year) and has been stretching out, 5 innings/60 pitches last time, NY does not really have a long guy currently.
Prospect, not the 4th best starter on an injury riddled rotation. And Boston has some good SP prospects. However I’d put him 3rd as I’m a Gonzalez skeptic (I expect him to end up a power bullpen arm). Perales and Monegro have really high ceilings. One thing Fitts does do is leave them with prospect SP depth to use Gonzalez or Perales in a deal for a cost controlled starter. But being the 4th best SP pitcher for the Sox is damning with faint praise in and of itself.
My sense with Verdugo was always that he was a very emotional guy – when he was up, he was up, fun, energetic and it was contagious. But when he was down he was down – difficult, petty and … that was contagious too.I saw an interview with Verdugo on MLB Network when he got off to a great start a couple years ago, and he was very very likable. Came across as a guy who just loves to play baseball.
Which is why it was always hard for me to square that with his run ins with Cora.
Clearly something is up with the guy, but I always liked him. Hoping one of these pitchers pans out, and we’re about to make a much bigger splash.
Going with the Lorena Bobbit defense. Daring. No, seriously don't know why it cut off.
I wonder if instead of Verdugo they'll send a subsidized Stanton to the Padres as part of a Soto trade...A Soto deal to the Yanks could still happen, but if this were part of that, why wouldn’t Cashman have just traded Fitts, Weissert and Judice to San Diego and have Preller flip them to us for Verdugo?
The fact that the Yankees twitter announced it suggests he could stay.
Anyway, obviously pleased with this but eager to see what else shakes out. Really wonder what we might have gotten had we traded Verdugo earlier.
Have you seen his spray chart overlapped on Yankee stadium? He might have hit 30 last year had he played for the Yanks. This is a great pick-up for the MFY, which, by definition, makes it a bad move for the Sox.Lol Verdugo's career high in HRs is 13. Yankee Stadium isn't *that* small. And while it's a fairly meaningless stats his career high in RBI is 74 despite getting 544+ AB 3x.
we should all know that spray charts are useless. Just ask A-gon. And how excited we were to trade for him.Have you seen his spray chart overlapped on Yankee stadium? He might have hit 30 last year had he played for the Yanks.
If the Sox wanted a GM who’d dump a RF with a much needed skill set for prospects - couldn’t we have just kept Bloom?
Yeah all he did in his only full season with us was hit .340 and lead all of baseball in hits.we should all know that spray charts are useless. Just ask A-gon. And how excited we were to trade for him.
I totally agree with this - this feels like a Bloom move. Hopefully Fitts becomes a quality major league starter, and maybe this move proceeds other moves to come - "another shoe to drop." Though how many times did we say that about a Bloom move? More seeds for the future. I'd like the team to acquire a couple of already established all-start quality major leaguers. When was the last time they did that? Maybe Story, but there were already yellow flags with him ...It's fascinating that Verdugo might have been Breslow's most obvious tradeable asset and he went ahead and dealt him to the longtime rival in his second trade ever.
This honestly feels like a move Bloom might have made--none of the pieces brought back look like they will have a major impact this year, but could be immense down the road. But by reputation alone I like that Breslow is working on bettering the pitching in the organization from the bottom up. And if they don't find a replacement right fielder, it could be a vote of confidence in Abreu and Raffaela.
Yup. This is very Bloomy, which, at this point in time is exactly the way to piss off the average Sox fan and guarantee another decline in ticket sales. Obviously, the off-season isn’t over but Bloom just increased the immense pressure he was facing prior to this move.I totally agree with this - this feels like a Bloom move.
