Thoughts on Yankees’ 2022 Season

It’s June 16th and I was curious about what people thought about the Yankees record this year, particularly in light the news of what happened at the end of April. First off I know that they could just this good. Their record right now is 46/16 and a winning percentage of .742, which is amazing. More power to them if they are doing it ‘honestly’. Secondly I know that ‘honestly’ in MLB is a relative word because I think just about every team is looking for any kind of ‘edge’ they can get, so bending or breaking the rules in some way isn‘t uncommon. It leads people to wonder not which teams are cheating, but which ones aren’t. And amongst those who are cheating, how far are they taking it? So I don’t see The Yankees as being unique in terms of breaking the rules. But what was concerning was the fact that the league saw two categories for teams caught breaking the rules - those who were punishable to the fullest extent and those whose status and dollar value made them ”too important”. Yes I know the Yankees were punished at one point, but the question is if they were protected from scandal by withholding the full extent of what they did. If the Yankees know that the league treats them differently, then they will be more likely to continue cheating and to cheat more extensively. They know that the MLB will avoid even trying to discover if they’re cheating if finding out will only lead them ignore it. And even ignoring it can involve incriminating discussions as it did here. So like with Covid (allegedly), the MLB may not want to know. I don’t have any evidence that they’re doing anything in 2022, but their winning percentage is over a full 10th of a percentage point above the next best team - the Mets at .641. None of the best teams are even close to them. The Yankees barely have 15 losses and we’re halfway through June. Their home/away loses are both in the single digits (7 losses at home, 9 away). So this is just food for thought to see what anyone else is thinking.

Judge is playing like a MVP, their pitching staff is amazing, some bounceback seasons (but not crazy) after downers from guys like LeMahieu, Torres.

Nothing funny here at all. It's MLB in a 62 game sample size. I'd bet they win less than 110 at the end of 162.

Terrible way to start a thread, I changed the title a bit at least.

They're an incredible team, galling as it is. Blown away by how great Cortes has been. Really a breath of fresh air seeing a guy pitch with incredible control and great secondary stuff with weird flair (kinda does some Cueto hesitations). He's been phenomenal for them since they picked him up. Otherworldly, this year. I hate watching him for the most part, because he's probably going to win, but he's fun to watch.

Again, they were really good after the deadline last year, 39-22 after trading for Rizzo. They traded for Clay Holmes just before that, Cortes and Taillon figured it out down the stretch last year (Taillon was the AL pitcher of the month for August), plus they finally got Severino back this year.

Yankees are having an amazing season. I fully expect some minor reversion to the mean, but they are a 100-105 win team that will likely get better at the deadline. If they stay healthy, they are going to be extremely hard to beat.

I can’t believe someone started a thread which forces Red Sox fans to say “no, the Yankees are just a really really good team.”

I’m going back to the Wild Card race.

Well I hate the Yankees as much as anyone, but even I can appreciate what they’re doing. It’s phenomenal. They’re just pummeling everyone - dominating offensively, defensively, and on the mound. Before the season I openly wondered on this board how good they’d be and I admit to being stunned. They just never ever seem to lose.

In a short series anyone can be knocked off, but man they are a frigging wagon right now.

Let’s see what the long, hot summer brings. If the juggernaut continue through September, we’ll start rubbing rabbits feet, hoping for a Seattle Mariners 2001 redoux.

Best of luck. ;)
