We can talk about his accomplishments as a player, but as a human being, he was an amazing person. I met him for a foundation and he was incredibly passionate and kind.

Horrible news. He did so many wonderful things on the field and off of it. I don't have much in the way of words right now. Thanks for everything, Tim, and rest in peace.

Well fuck. That was really fast. A feel horribly for his wife, dealing with her own health and his kids who are too young to be dealing with this.

The man was pure class one and off the field. May he rest in peace. One of the great things about the 2004 and 2007b runs was that he was an integral part of it. His teammate valued him. His opponents respected him. His fans adored him. His is a lasting legacy of sportsmanship, class, and perseverance.

A guy who failed as a 1b, reinvented himself as a knuckleballer with success, then failed again in 1993, came back and reinvented his knuckleball with the Sox. And then moved to the booth.
Resilient, and obviously solid off the field. Not that you can minimize the shortening of his life, but he made the most of his time.

Oh wow - devastating news. Wake was everything you could ever want in a baseball player and the Nation loved him back.

So many good Red Sox memories associated with Wakefield, but he was more than that. You never really know what kind of person the professional athlete you root for is, but Wake is the one guy who I have unwavering belief was a genuinely good human being. He was the best of us, and he will be missed.

A guy who legit toiled and earned everything he got, without ever having a chip on his shoulder or sense of entitlement. Consummate teammate. One of the greats.

I just switched over from football to check on the Sox game and saw the news. I've never been the type of guy to post about these things feeling full of emotion, but I have to say that my eyes are welling up a bit. Such an admirable and IMO a very underrated career. I've always felt mixed about if/how athletes should be viewed as role models, but Wake has always carried himself in such a positive light. We would do well as a society if more of us followed his lead. Wishing Stacy strength and courage as she now faces her own journey during this difficult time.

God fucking dammit. This is just awful.

As others said earlier in the thread, Wake always seemed to be on the mound when I made it to Fenway from the late 90s through the late 00s. In retrospect, I'm glad I got to see him so often -- he's a great representative of the team, acting as an anchor during perhaps the most important evolution of the team.

So sad for all of us fans, but of course even sadder for his family and friends. Condolences to all. Fuck.

They should retire 49, HOF be damned. If Pesky is up there, Wake should be too.
Yea I honestly had never really thought about it, but when you look at what he did for the community and his rankings among the all time club leaders in pitching… they should do it.

An absolute gut punch, my favorite baseball player. I’m broken for his family.

Wow so abrupt and awful to hear about. What a brutal last few days.

Maybe a risky/aggressive treatment plan that went poorly, or things were just further along than it sounded.

Regardless, RIP Wake. One of my favorites, probably saw more of his starts in person than any other MLB pitcher.

Incredibly sad, awful news. I’ve got so many memories watching Wake, and he’s a treasure to the whole region. RIP.

Oh my God.

Now in retrospect the discussion amongst the players that led to the cancer news getting out must have also been about how close to passing he was. I knew brain cancer was bad news but I was still hoping he was going to beat it. Just heartbroken. You'll be remembered Tim.

I’m just at a complete loss. This happened so damn quick. When was the last time Wake was in the NESN studio? I feel like it was very recently… I just don’t know. Processing.

This gutted me more than I'd think it would. When I think of "Red Sox mascot" dating back to Pesky, I think Wake was a guy who would serve as that ambassador for the next 10-20 years. He bridged the mid 90s competitive but not great teams to the more consistent winners of the aughts. And actively carved a role somewhere between "ace" and closer on every team!

Damn, man.
