Trade deadline

It's pretty common for the Sox not to get a player many or even most of us want them to get. Most of those situations have turned out OK. Exhibit A is ARod. Exhibit B is Ellsbury.
Giancarlo Stanton. So many on this board were begging for years for the Sox to go after him and give him a huge extension.

Personally I can't say that I have a strong take on what the Sox should or shouldn't do. I'm skeptical of giving up prospects for any rental given how much of a diceroll the post-season is. There are a lot of stacked teams out there. How much does adding a big name rental really move the needle on the odds of a championship?

I'm deeply skeptical of acquiring star players via free agency given the length of contract that they tend to command, so it seems to me that the best ways of building a contending team are to have a core of homegrown talent to build around or acquiring cost-controlled talent via trade. Given that any prospect is a chance to provide value for 6 seasons it seems difficult to make the math work when comparing to a half season of impact.

I would say this: There are times where a team achieves beyond expectations and looks to the front office to supplement their effort with reinforcements as a sign that what they've done to get where they are has been recognized. Sort of the opposite of what happened in Seattle when Graverman was traded.

It appears that the big splash deal isn't going to happen; but if the deadline passes without an upgrade at 1B or another arm or two, it could be taken as a signal that the long-play supersedes the effort put out this season. Players are human, too; they follow the trade deadline, too.

It’s something that certainly merits consideration. The players will, and should, be upset if they aren’t reinforced at the deadline. It’s definitely not nothing.

I prefer the long play because I trust the people in charge to make it work building a thorough organization and not overreact. And as I mentioned in the Yankees thread, with the Yankees interested in Rizzo, we just didn't have the prospect depth they had to make that deal. The Yankees chose to give up a couple of prospects who might be in our top 5-8 (or higher?) if the Cubs would eat the salary.

It is what it is.

But there will be others

I hear Bobby Dalbec is perfectly cool with the long game. I sure hope Chaim does something. Give up a mid-tier prospect for a vet upgrade in the pen and/or 1B. The entire farm system won’t collapse if he does that.

There's still plenty of time, but we're pretty much on the same page

I’m with the theory that there isn’t much to add, besides a 1B upgrade. But I also think you need to send a message to this team that the GM is behind them and will do everything to help them win. They have played fantastic all season, overachieved for sure. It would suck for the players to see every other team making moves and then crickets here.
And the Mets are going to overpay for Kris Bryant. Their new owner will not have it any other way.

Very interesting! That they're counting on Schwarber at 1B seems very unlikely, he's played one game there in the major leagues. He's a left fielder. Suggests more pieces are moving.

It's pretty obvious after tonight's game that Schwarber will be returning to catcher with Plawecki coming out of the bullpen from now on!
You cracked the code! And Vazquez at 1B.

Lots of people on Twitter confirming Schwarber now, seems legit. Now we gotta see if more dominoes are about to fall. Dammit, I was about to quit this game for the night!

Looks like Schwarber has a $7M salary this year, with a 2022 mutual option of $11.5M or a $3M buyout.

28 years old and having his best season at the plate, .253/.340/.570 for an OPS+ of 150.

A nice piece to have in your lineup, but where does he play...

More I think about it either a) Devers is more seriously hurt than we realize or b) this seems like a precursor to a Duran trade. Miami would be my guess but there are big fish in Colorado and Cleveland too.

My gut says Duran is on the move. This just doesn’t fit without that. Or back to Worcester and a postseason pinch runner.

Wow just realized I've been lurking here for over 16 years, How do I become a member?
I lurked for a similar amount of time before I became a member this year. I decided to start posting more, and made an effort to make posts that added to the discussion, trying to point out things no one had mentioned or put some relevant stats together to shed light on something. Proofread and made sure my argument was coming through the text. Wasn't really thinking about becoming a member but woke up one morning to find a Dope had made me one. So my advice is, try to post in a way that benefits everyone else (which is good SoSH advice in general!) Good luck!

Duran is one of the more exciting prospects to come up in a while. Seems like all year we've been saying how amazing he's been and how we can't wait to see him in Boston. What do you suspect the Sox would be getting in exchange for him?

Hands off Duran.

I'm embarrassed that I didn't really know anything about Aldo Ramirez, the 20-year-old single-A pitcher we are giving up for Schwarber, who according to soxprospects was our #8 prospect. Soxprospects calls him a potential back-end starter, ceiling mid-rotation starter, "interesting" arm but "a long way to go". So, a lottery ticket who could turn into a major leaguer but also might not. Seems appropriate enough on what to give up for two months (potentially a year and two months) of a pretty good hitting left fielder.
