It makes some sense but you could argue Bader deserves it just as much. Gustafsson was nearly killed buy Johnson, and Johnson was just broken by DC. At least Bader is on a winning streak and he was beating up Teixeira before getting KO'd. Still should be a good fight as long as they're both healthy.

Also I can't wait to see Ronda murder Correia at 190 after the touchy suicide comment. This could be Ronda's most violent fight yet.

She'll be looking to break her arm.

In this Tavares/Ortega fight, Tavares has one of the nastiest cuts I've ever seen.  The doctors are going to have to put a pint of blood back in him.  Hell of an effort by Tavares.

Sounded like Ben Rothwell was pushing more for WWE World Heavyweight Championship match than a UFC Heavyweight one.

Melendez - Alvarez was a weird fight. Alvarez took more damage in the first round than Melendez did the whole fight, but Alvarez more or less controlled the last two rounds and Melendez was gassed.

Holy shit what a fucking EPIC battle.

Werdum is just relentless. Just cannot belive all the punishment Velasquez is taking.

That was bonkers. I never thought I'd see Cain get so gassed and resort to going to the ground because he was outstruck. What a win for Werdum.

It just has to be conditioning. After winning the first, Cain pretty much had nothing left by the mid-second. His punches got through but absolutely no power in them.

This year has been the most bonkerest of all bonkers!

I imagine we will see Cain fight Rothwell before he gets a rematch.

IDK, a rematch would have a lot of hype behind it now (a lot more so then Rothwell vs whoever imo), and not sure banking on Cain staying healthy enough to make 2 straight fights is Dana's most profitable play there.

Hats off to Werdum tonight. That was legit as hell. Never even fathomed the chance he'd be owning Cain in the stand up.

At the post fight presser, Werdum said he was in Mexico city for 40 days, everyone else said they were there for 2 weeks. Normally fighters are in town for a week, so two weeks isn't much more than usual.

He always comes off as the smartest guy in the room. He had this all planned out from day 1

edit- he actually trained at a higher altitude than Mexico City

Fabricio Werdum has submission wins over Cain Velasquez, Fedor Emelianenko & Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Might just be best heavyweight ever.

He also lost to Big Nog. I would put Fedor and Big Nog ahead of Werdum easily.

He hasn't lost since 2011 to . . . Alistair Overeem.

Does Cain get a rematch?

He should IMO.

Just shitty. I hardly even care about a Mendes-McGregor fight.

Also Machida is done. He's not even half the fighter he was 2 years ago. He may not need to retire now but he at least needs to stop fighting in the small cage.

I would love to have seen Frankie Edgar get the call over Mendes. OTOH we get to see McGregor enter new territory in fighting against an excellent wrestler.

Yeah, i'd of been more pumped for Edgar too.

Dana must be a mental mess over this. McGregor losing tonight would be a huge hit to the hype machine before it even spits out the big fight.

Today's the day this phony hype train goes off the rails, boys.

Wish it was Aldo beating this guys face in but Mendes will have to do

Curious why you think that? I've only seen him fight the once, but thought his striking was phenomenal (and yall know how I like to rip on MMA guys' hands). Have you seen enough of his fights to find weaknesses?

He's fought NOBODY of substance during his entire rise. Go look at the guys he's beat and when he's beat them.

The only guy of any substance, IMO, is Max Holloway and he fought him when Holloway was 21 and had 9 pro fights.

He's also never faced off against a guy who's primary discipline is wrestling. Theres no way Mendes stands and trades with him tonight.

I get that, but isn't it possible to look so good against subpar competition that you can be projected to compete against top guys? Like a minor leaguer destroying AA pitching?

Is it generally easier for a striker to keep a wrestler up or a wrestler to keep a striker down?

Mcgregor had a physical altercation with Faber after the weigh-ins and gave a shaky interview to Helwani about it. I'm curious to see if the pressure and promoting has gotten to him. like Mikeford said, this truly is his first test. I'm hoping Mendes puts Cmac's jaw in his ear but would be just as happy if he beats him on the ground for 5 rounds.
I had to laugh when Mcgregor called Mendes an over grown Midget  . He's the perfect dumb jock bully.

I cant really speak to your first question if I'm honest. Don't know enough about the evolution of someone's skills in MMA cuz I don't have first hand experience.

As for the second question though, it really depends on the strikers takedown defense. UFC.com claims Conor is 100% on takedown defense, meaning he's never been taken down, but it also doesn't say out of how many attempts that is. I haven't seen every one of his fights so I'm not 100% believing that stat, but again, he against fought a guy whos main discipline was wrestling anyway. I think it's fair to say he hasn't REALLY had his takedown defense tested that much.
EDIT: Fightmetric.com doesnt list him in the top 10 for featherweight takedown defense. The criteria for this is 5 UFC fights and 20 TD defended. Conor's bio on the same site shows him having 100% TD, so we can infer that he's faced less than 20 takedown attempts in his UFC career.

As far as the inverse, the striker keeping the wrestler up, that would have a lot to do with his reach, his kicks (don't wanna shoot for a takedown and eat a kick in the face after all) and/or his ability to keep a guy in the clinch and deal damage that way. Conor's primary striking discipline is boxing so I don't think Mendes has to worry too much about the kicks or the clinch.

Jumping on the bandwagon along with 80% of my country for this! Amazing buzz around the place.

Hope McGregor does the business although have to say I'm pretty intrigued to see what way things go when he eventually loses. Going to be one hell of a comedown.

Robbie Lawler has come a long way from Nick Diaz open handed slapping him in the face, calling him a bitch and knocking him out. Rory should win, but Lawler is wily.

That head kick in the third came from a close position. That was sick.

As for Rory, it's tough for these guys to come back from when they break like he did in there.

I don;t see any way McGregor wins this fight, but I couldn't believe he was even matched against Aldo, so what the fuck do I know?

Rory's as technically proficient as anyone out there, and he's young so he can come back (look at lawler), but I've never thought "oh, rory wants to rip his opponent's head off." I wonder what was going through his head when Lawler didn't succumb in the third round.
