Very nice ball movement on this team.  That's one thing I've noticed about them over the past two seasons or so....In the Lappas era, there seemed to be a lot of undisciplined three-point shot selection.  I also thought this of the Ford era (combined with the up-tempo pace), and even in the earlier Kellogg teams.  I know they made a switch away from the DDM offense...so perhaps that is part of it.  But they look overall much more disciplined and settled into their offense, possibly also due to Kellogg growing confidence as a coach.  I think even Coach Norman Dale would approve.

A win is a win is a win. Clinch a winning season in the A10 and all but locked up an NCAA bid. Richmond lost tonight as well so for the moment all alone in 3rd place.

This game is going to be tough

Dayton has been playing well.

Breakfast with the Minutemen.

And you're right, it's been no picnic this morning. The good news is it's been a clean game so far and the refs are keeping the whistles in their mouths, so no projected foul trouble. UMass' bigs are exerting themselves in the paint on offense (Lalanne, Carter & Esho have 17 of their 25 points), which is great to see instead of the continued reliance on forced crappy outside shots as the shot clock winds down.

One issue I've seen thus far with the bigs is on defense. They're coming out too far on the wings to cut off Dayton's small forwards, who can all hit mid-range jumpers, and instead they're getting beaten off the dribble and driving for buckets. They're just not quick enough nor do they have the best footwork, and nobody's helping out down low. Increase the spacing and get the forwards to move toward the lane as a unit when the handler picks up his dribble, and that shit will end.

Up 4, approaching 7:00 left in the half.

If Dayton decides to run & gun, they're going to lose big time. That's not their game. They're kicking UMass's ass on the offensive glass. 6 ORB off 14 missed shots, and 6 of those misses were on threes. They're dominating any misses on shorter stuff, so they need to keep working for quality middle to inside shots instead of just launching from deep as soon as they cross halfcourt.

EDIT - There's a case in point, as Robinson grabs an inside miss and puts it in. Esho is fucking horrible at boxing out.

Oh man, what a feed from Chaz to Gordon, the perfect long bounce pass from the deep right wing to the paint, splitting the defenders in full stride.

Two really bad misses by Chaz, and Sanford gets an easy lay-in the other way. Only a 1 pt game now, down from 6.

EDIT - And now he dribbles it off his foot on their final possession as the horn sounds. Wake the fuck up.

It's as if Kellogg gave them all sleeping pills just before the final minute of the first half, and it's carried over. Some downright pathetic basketball in the first few minutes of the 2nd.

The forwards are sucking again, in just about ever facet. No longer able to establish presence down low, as Dayton's fronting them, so now it's up to the guards again (as usual). Pierre is just having his way right now on both ends of the floor. Flyers have a 19-15 board advantage. How the fuck does UMass allow 9 offensive rebounds while collecting only 10 DRBs? You can't go 50-50 on their end, fucktwits.

Esho with a lucky break. That was a jump ball, and they called the foul. Maxie needs to get the ball up above the defenders, or keep it shielded by his body as he makes his move. You can't let a fucking guard tie you up like that.

Another ORB for Dayton. That's 10. Jesus...

And make it 11, as they tip it 4 times and then tap it in. No body position whatsoever.

Lalanne just picked up his 3rd foul. That's 2 quick ones in under a minute. Exactly what they didn't need, just as he was starting to use his wing span underneath to discourage penetration.

Nice position by Gordon to draw the charge, but that was a stupid move by Sanford to drive into him. Need to pull back, and he had 3 full steps to do something different.

Aaaaaand down by 8 now. Once again, the team blows chunks coming out of a time-out. It's epidemic.

Sorry, Chaz. You didn't get fouled there. You tried to force contact, and you lost. Stop bitching and STFU.

Chaz now 2 for 12 after clanking that one.

And a bucket the other way makes it a 10-pt game.

Four fouls for Cady. They're toast. Sad part is that if Putney had put that layup in, no foul would have been needed.

The refs have had a interesting game

The first half they let them play. Now they are blowing the whistle at first touch.

Because UMass is wearing down and they've lost a step, which they couldn't afford to lose against a much quicker team. They're definitely committing more fouls this half.

Really smart time-out there by Miller. Dayton was on the verge of a bad turnover, which is how UMass builds its comebacks.

Excellent D there on that possession, and they get the turnover & fast break. Cut it to 4 here, please.

EDIT - Another missed FT, but down to 5.

Good move by Gordon, but Chaz got away with a walk on the penetration before the dish out.
