Newcastle with an early lead from an obvious PEN

Edit: even after a rather bizarre check for offside. The initial pass - to an offside Gordon - was intercepted and tapped directly back to Gordon. Apparently they were looking at whether the interception was “deliberate”

Perfect encapsulation of how you can’t get words on paper to fully capture the offside rule. There’s no world in which you want that called as an offside, but the current language creates needless ambiguity.

You want to avoid situations where the ball hits a defender canceling an offside, or where the defender makes a desperate lunge and gets an uncontrolled touch. But, that description is going to make this situation a grey area. Bah.

Should have held the free kick while the player was still down. Tough break for Newcastle.

Players have taken advantage of the head injury rule to stall the game, and this felt like a pretty clear case of that.

Potential to backfire on the official, but I like that he allows the quick restart if only to discourage future phantom head injuries when a trailing arm barely brushes someone's head.

I can see that. But the ref was walking over to check on the player (or tell him to get up) and wasn’t focused on the restart. I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I sympathize with the Newcastle fans here.

It’s shocking Anthony Gordon’s black and white stripes are visible by the end of a match for all of the grass stains he covers himself in.

Very similar to the first one actually .. Phillips is swinging his leg to clear the ball and Gordon sticks his leg in front … I have never understood why it’s a penalty - Robertson against Spurs a few years ago comes to mind.

There’s no attempt to play the ball. He’s deliberately getting himself kicked. It can’t be a penalty.

Better take on that penalty… It’s a foul on Gordon. If anything, he’s endangering an opponent but chopping his kicking leg.

Getting back to the penalty calls … why is it a PEN when a player is in the motion of kicking a ball and, for what ever reason he instead connects with the opposition?

Its not a foul , just an accident or, at best a 50/50

Agree with others that sticking your foot in harms way to get kicked, especially from behind, shouldn’t be a penalty. It’s come up a few times over the past few years and it makes no sense why it is called this way

BVB win for the 1st time in München in a decade with a 0-2 victory of Bayern. Leverkusen now 13 points clear at the top of the table with 7 matches to go.

Wasn’t a penalty on Nunez but this ref is absolutely awful. No consistency and no control of the game

How is that a foul on Mac at midfield but not a PK for Mo in the box?

well, Joe gets full value for his yellow at least.
