Bad Defensive Posture: Bad Run D! BAD!!

Overcommitting and Lack of Patience

Fans have been clamoring for the Patriots to play more aggressive football, but this was not what they had in mind.

Kansas City’s six longest runs of the game, in decreasing order, were gains of 48, 17, 16, 12, 9 and 8 yards. Five of those six runs (the 16-yard gain being the exception) were either misdirections or runs that were bounced outside. Each of these five plays were successful because Patriot defenders ‒ Chandler Jones, Dont’a Hightower, and Jerod Mayo to be precise ‒ overcommitted in the wrong direction.

The above video is of Knile Davis’s 16-yard run, made possible because the Patriots overcommitted on the other five long runs.

Jerod Mayo hesitates to abandon the backside of the play; this indecision results in him being swallowed up by the center. A 5 yard run turns into a 16 yard run because the team has grown indecisive having been burned by over-pursuit before.

Ultimately, all six runs that went for 8 yards or more were the direct result of players lacking discipline and overcommitting.

Great article.

My takeaway: this is as much a coaching problem as anything else.

The Patriots have had some porous D over the last handful of years, but how often can we say that lack of discipline is one of the Patriots defense biggest problem?

Well, I've never said it, but that's also because I've never analyzed it.

Not sure if you're arguing for or against it being a coaching problem, but in my view the lack of preparedness for the KC game hints at a coaching problem. These guys should be ready to play and clearly they weren't - it's one thing if it's a few guys, but when it's the entire team? Yikes.
