Wild Winter Fun- January 2024 Transfer Window

January transfer news is already coming out of Spain:

Juan Miranda is apparently off to join Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah at AC Milan. Milan beat Napoli to the punch on this one, and the rumored 2 million Euro fee is really affordable for the Real Betis left back. Deal is expected to be signed in January with the move taking place over the summer.

Ditto with Bryan Zaragoza. He has had quite the rapid rise, going from relative unknown at Granada to Spain international to the newest Bayern Munich signing in a matter of months. He's an absolutely electric winger who came up through the Granada academy. I was hoping he would stay in Spain for another year or two because he's so fun to watch, but so it goes.

La Liga has given Barcelona permission to spend some extra cash after the terrible Gavi injury. They are using the funds to bring Vitor Roque from Atletico Paranaense early. He was set to do so next summer, but Barcelona have elected to have him join the club sooner with the new financial flexibility. This might say something about the form of Robert Lewandowski than anything else.

Don't expect Real Madrid to make any moves this winter despite their injury crisis. They signed a bunch of their younger stars to new contracts recently- Vini Jr., Rodrygo, Valverde, Camavinga- but the policy under Florentino Perez has been to make no moves in January due to the inflated prices. I do wonder if maybe we will have some insight on where Mbappe will end up this summer. Any club hoping to sign young star Nico Williams in January can cross him off their wish list. He signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao this week and would have otherwise been available on a free.

Everyone’s favorite topic: Mbappe to Real Madrid. There are already rumors of an offer from Madrid. Fab Romano has already done an exclusive podcast about it. 33 days until he decides to stay in Paris and we can do it all again next year.

And when Mbappe rejects the Madrid offer we’ll be inundated with rumours of his signing in the PL - it will be the lead story in the Liverpool Echo every day for three months.

I suppose there is a world where they could afford him - the one where Salah (and his £360k/week salary) is sold to Saudi for £200m - one can dream.

Ultimately I think Mbappe really wants to play for Madrid. It’s his childhood club, and the marketing opportunities are obscene for him. I wonder how much Madrid really need him though. They need a striker, either a 9 or someone to play the false 9, but Mbappe likes to drift pretty wide left where Vini Jr. and Rodrygo are already doing a great job. I think the club has done a great job building this squad (this thought is vomit inducing) and adding Mbappe is a risk. That being said, Florentino Perez has his tendencies and Mbappe fits those.

Speaking of vomit inducing, this meaningless “rumor” is one of the reason I hate the January transfer window.

“Barcelona are ready to offer Mason Greenwood Lionel Messi’s iconic No. 10 shirt as part of a £40M transfer this summer.”

Note that the original source appears to be the Sun so there’s that…

And in the ever popular money can’t buy you happiness category - the Daily Mail is reporting that Jordan Henderson has had enough and wants to return to the Premier League.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-12933413/Jordan-Henderson-wants-RETURN-Premier-League.html

He’s reportedly on £700k a week!!!!! - and tax free to boot . The kicker is he has to complete two years on the contract - otherwise it’s a flat 20% - so 26 weeks earnings would constitute a hefty £3.6m tax bill - mind you the salary would be £18m so I’m sure he’ll get by.

he can use the rest of the money repairing the bridge he blew up on the journey to Saudi. Methinks it won’t be enough.

he is being absolutely savaged on social media. The LFC fans are washing their hands of him and of course everyone else is already predisposed to give it to him with both barrels.

Yeah, I never thought I was going to have to keep that jersey stashed in the back of the closet next to the Owen and Torres shirts for a while.

Not great for Gio!

Today I’m seeing Marseille and Sevilla thrown around as possibly interested.

Some Union Berlin transfer news: Bonucci to Fenherbaçe, Kevin Vogt in from Hoffenheim.

Fofana loan ends and he’s back to Chelsea (for now at least).

Lots of rumors flying around about Gio Reyna on a loan to any number of La Liga teams. Girona, Sevilla, and Real Sociedad have all been named.

The Athletic reports that Jordan Henderson has negotiated his exit and left Al Ettifaq in advance of joining Ajax. No fee, but there is much paperwork to sort out.

It seems like he wanted to get out of KSA but the Premier League was off the table. Any of his earnings would be taxable under English tax law unless he spends at least two years abroad. We don’t know what he was earning in Saudi Arabia but if it’s even half of what was reported it’s probably worth several millions for him not to return to the Prem, and that doesn’t take into account the reception he’s likely to receive.

Henderson just doing huge damage to his reputation for six months of Saudi paychecks. I wonder if in five years it will all be water under the bridge for most Liverpool fans, or if he has permanently made himself persona non grata for most fans. Surely for LGBTQ fans and their allies it will be tough.

His legacy looks pretty torched from here. Maybe fans will soften and remember the good times in five years, but I think his willingness to shut up for money will resonate longer.

The veiled commentary between Hendo and Klopp in interviews isn't helping either of them, but I think that's fuel on the Henderson funeral pyre.

There's a path back for Henderson's reputation if he's willing to be contrite in public and then double down on his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights with a particular focus on KSA. It's a little like Mike Vick's journey following the dog fighting conviction if Henderson is willing to walk that road.

Oh for fuck's sake I just heard this from one of my friends. I guess it was gonna happen anyway, but ffffffuuuuuuuccccckkkkkkk.....
I assume his contract was expiring at the end of the season, making this sort of a win-win deal. Sociedad can use the depth with fixture congestion coming up. I would guess he’s not available for the Champions League but there are plenty of La Liga games left and they have advanced in the Copa del Rey to the point where they’re actively trying to win it.

It was up and he was going to leave. There was some talk that he was upset that he didn’t get to leave last year, but that’s all hearsay as Union keeps that stuff under wraps very, very well.

At the end of the day, it makes sense for all parties, I’m sure. Except for me :). I’m still sweating relegation, and for a team that isn’t scoring many goals (in large part because they got so many from Becker last year, and so few in this one), just seems like it’s tempting fate for a pretty low payoff.

No that’s what I was referring to. I wasn’t aware the rule had changed. He’d most likely be on the bench for La Real against PSG in that case.

Union Berlin just signed Chris Bedia (presumably) to replace Becker. I don’t know anything about him except he’s Ivorian and not at AFCON and comes from the Swiss league. TBD.

Newcastle seem like they are on the verge of blowing it up to reset their FFP. Lots of smoke around Trippier to Bayern and Almiron to a Saudi club. That's all broadly consistent with what Darren Eales was signalling earlier in the month, too. Joelinton is also out for the year and unlikely to extend his contract. It sucks that this squad aren't going to be the ones to break the trophy drought--while the club is hard to root for under the new ownership, this particular squad is easy to enjoy.

Aren’t the Premier League teams voting to change the rules next month to be more in line with the rest of Europe?

If they do, the new regime won't kick in until the season after next.

So basically they can just have one of the PIF-owned Saudi clubs way overpay for him to balance the books.
It is one of the non-PIF clubs, although I can’t imagine those clubs don’t take phone calls from the prince. If I read Eales’s comments correctly, though, it’s not even the fee that they care about. You book all of the profits from a sale in the year of the sale. But if you take that money and buy another player for exactly the same amount, you can amortize the sale price over five years and save 80% on your FFP in year one of the new deal. You just churn your way to compliance.
