Jeff Howe is speculating that Frank Ragnow a guard out of Arkansas might be the pick at 23. Getting him and trading out of 31 would totally be a hallmark of a Belichick draft.
Would they kick Thuney out to LT? I don't really get using a high pick on IOL. Other than QB, it seems like the one spot where a rookie would get basically no playing time except for injury.

They could draft Ragnow, slot him at guard, and trade Shaq Mason if they don't want to pay the money it's going to take to sign him long-term. Or they simply could take somebody like Will Hernandez at 31.

Yup. That’s why we should enjoy the next 5 hours. Forget sizzle, nothing will be done to addresss the D on day 1, and one of the firsts will be dealt.

So taking Ragnow lets them trade away their best offensive lineman (and for what return?)? This team has enough holes; I don't really get this. And Hernandez creates the same kind of dilemma.

This would be so typical BB, even more than my scenario of trading up from 23 and then trading back from 31. Everyone would go bananas, they wouldn't address the D until tomorrow, and then of course they will win 12-13 games and end up back in the AFCCG.

Probably, unless it is like 2012 and BB drafts multiple difference making defensive players in the first round. You just never know with him.

You don't think it's possible they trade Mason if they don't want to pay him? I do. Will BB commit the kind of money that Andrew Norwell got this offseason(5 years/$66.5 million)?

What would the return on a Shaq Mason trade have to be to make it worth it to draft Ragnow in the 1st? A 2nd round pick? Early-mid 3rd?

Possible but definitely disappointing. They need more talent and this is just roster churn.

Probably a 2 - they'd probably get a third for Mason as a comp pick (assuming they didn't counteract that with another signing) but I don't think they can get that for an undersized G that would then need a new contract.

Thanks. And of course the comp pick would be in the late 90s in 2020.

Is Mason really going to get top end $? I know he's really been good, but it seems like not being a prototypical G may limit his market. Anyway if they go interior OL, and I'm with Super Nomario- I don't think they will, it should be James Daniels out of Iowa.

No way in hell he’s paying Mason. Logan Mankins was a much better player and getting him paid involved Kraft’s intervention. Mason doesn’t have his resume. One thing I will say is this, Belichick has an excellent track record when he actually picks someone in the first round. None of his firsts should be scrutinized even if it’s not a sexy name. The majority of them have hit in some way shape or form.

Hell even Maroney was good for a season or so.

Apparently they are trotting out all the former Cowboys greats along with Rog to start the festivities. Hoping to avoid the massive boos he received last year I supposed. I predict they will still boo the shit out of him.

And to be fair, NFLN just reported on trades during B.B. era: it’s about a 50/50 split, 21 trade downs, 22 trade ups, or maybe vice versa.

The frustrating Christmas morning aspect is that the trade downs tend to come high in the draft, with the trade ups reported in real time as “Who ...?” reaches.

I used to love it when B.B. would wheel a first for a second and a first the following year. But just as teams long ago stopped giving away Mike Vrabels and Rodney Harrisons, those trades have not happened for a long time.

On your last point, this used to be a specialty, but teams stopped doing that several years ago when they got less dumb.

On your second point, again 2012 stands out, because the Pats traded up TWICE in the first round that year, once from 27 to 21, and again from 31 to 25, to select exciting defensive players.

On your first point, correct, it has been very even in terms of trades up and down (and I think he is also in the 20s in terms of trading players for picks).

If Mayfield is the pick watch Mel Kiper's head explode. Or don't because that would involve watching ESPN but listening to him talk about Mayfield a few days ago I wanted to punch my phone.

Speaking of, and I probably ask this every year, but are you guys watching on ESPN or NFLN?

Hopefully watching both via watch3 and Fubo. Will be switching back and forth for the audio. (On ESPN when McShay/Kiper/Schefter are talking. and NFLN other times)

On one of the two networks, some commentator reported a conversation with an exec who knows Dorsey very well. Reaction — NFW he takes Mayfield (Mary Kay Cabot reporting notwithstanding).

I can’t say I understand why the Browns are leaking all over the place with the #1 pick. (Their leak that they are open for business on the #4 pick, is completely understandable).

Edit — if the idea is to scare the Jets into a trade cuz they want Mayfield, it won’t work. There are too many QBs, the Jets seem too sensible, and the threat is not credible because the ever changing leaks to Cabot have created a flavor of the day feel to this.

Any chance we can get a Patriots specific draft news only thread? I'm not going to be able to watch and wading through this entire thread will be pretty onerus.

I would have started it, but didn't want to break protocol in here.

Someone usually starts separate threads for each Pats selection. I guess you'd miss trades, though.

Roger comes out each year surrounding himself with veterans, kids with cancer and puppies and he still gets booed off the stage each time. It's the most entertaining part of the entire night to see this prick get jeered 32 times.

Teams already eyeing move into back of first round: Vikings have received calls today from six teams interested in potentially trading into back half of first round and No. 30 pick, per source. Calls coming for New England at 31 and Philadelphia at 32, too.

There’s zero chance the pats make a pick at 31. None. Zip.

I’m convinced that they either trade out of the first round with both picks entirely or they end up drafting a guy like Ragnow or one of the Iowa guards at 23. The only way they make the pick at 31 is if a TE they really like is there and they make the pick to fuck with Gronk.

I’d imagine that happens every year for that extra year of control.
We shall see.

Surprised we still don't know who the Browns are taking. They must think a team could panic into a trade.

Maybe this thread could have standard formatting for formal picks to make it easier to scroll.

For example, at the top of the post, Pick Number, Team that made the pick, Player selected. Then commentary in a new paragraph or post.

“3 QBs going 1-2-3 for the first time since 1999”

I must be old, “since 1999” doesn’t seem like such a big deal.

Wow, “I can’t believe you’re booing the Cowboys” — pathetic.

Big respect to Dallas fans of all things,
