And that’s before additional re-structuring as well. They were FAs so cap space unchanged at about $21M, with potential to add another $10M with cuts to players like Allen, McClellin, and Gillislee.

Damn...not a lot of money to play with while losing 4-5 major contributors.Spotrac has it at $22.4M with Allen still on the roster. I don't believe that accounts for the estimated $5.5M that our current draft picks will take up.
Yeah, it just depends what happens with the other backs. Gillislee is not expensive so that obviously works in his favor. On the other hand, the coaching staff really seemed to lose faith in him last year. He got six carries after Week 8.Given that Gillislee is one of only two RBs on the roster I expect him to be on the team. I mean LGBT is a UFA but if they cut Gillislee and signed Blount to a small deal would that even result in savings?
Taylor had a 90 rating last season, and 3.5 to 1 TD/INT ratio. It would be pretty impressive if a rookie QB did that.Well the Bills made the playoffs and are swapping Tyrod for one of the QBs in the first round. That's an upgrade.
I get we all loved his postseason performance, but DA isn't a major contributor. Butler and Solder, I'll grant you but neither was stellar last season. Lewis...yeah. That hurts, but hopefully White can play the regular season like it's the postseason.Damn...not a lot of money to play with while losing 4-5 major contributors.
Alright, you can downgrade them to 'contributors' and it's still a hole left with not a lot of money to fill. Let's hope we hit big this draft.I get we all loved his postseason performance, but DA isn't a major contributor. Butler and Solder, I'll grant you but neither was stellar last season. Lewis...yeah. You joke but this is a team trending downward. I mean, they went from winning two Super Bowls to not winning one. Next year they only may make the AFCCG.The rate things are going, they won't play in their fourth Super Bowl in five years
Going at it in reverse, it seems likely that BB thinks Cannon can play LT as well as he played RT. This would be consistent with BB liking Cannon much more than anyone early on, and having his faith rewarded.Alright, you can downgrade them to 'contributors' and it's still a hole left with not a lot of money to fill. What one of these guys would McDaniels think was a sure thing or even likely to come back?Individually one can't complain too vociferously about not re-upping Dola, Lewis or Solder, as all seem to be getting top of the market dollars, and that's not the Patriot Way. But in the aggregate this clearly makes the offense more reliant on Jules returning healthy, replacing Lewis skills, and finding blind-side protection for the family jewels.
And Gronk appears to be making some noise about getting a new contract that more fully recognizes his unique abilities, or maybe retiring.
Now to the point, was our favorite OC fully aware of future roster construction philosophy when he decided to make a career altering decision? Or if he didn't know, would events of the past 24 hours, have an impact of his decison making. And might he be slighlty annoyed?
Right. And it's not like McDaniels was ever gone. He was involved in every discussion all season. He certainly had an idea of what the plan was. What one of these guys would McDaniels think was a sure thing or even likely to come back?
Sure things? Don't know. But I wonder what level of discussion took place at higher levels after the SB, that led to Josh feeling better about the Pats OC job than a HC job, (Colts, Giants, or?). But his job as Pats OC certainly got more challenging over the past day. What one of these guys would McDaniels think was a sure thing or even likely to come back?
And will probably be way too expensive for the Patriots. The Honey Badger just got cut
Far more pressing needs. PassAnd will probably be way too expensive for the Patriots.
It's an evergreen post but you generally need to draft/sign UDFAs at a very high level over a four year period to win a superbowl--it's the only way you're going to have the talent. If they don't have a stellar draft they'd really need to have exceptional contributions from the years two through four guys including UDFAs.Alright, you can downgrade them to 'contributors' and it's still a hole left with not a lot of money to fill. Let's hope we hit big this draft.
Everyone is leaving. Not for the money though - it's because they hate their CB sitting, SB losing coach. The rate things are going, they won't play in their fourth Super Bowl in five years
I wish the media that ripped the trade would at least acknowledge the economics of the situation.Remember when everyone wanted them to keep Jimmy so they could tag him?
I agree with this 100%. As long as Brady is healthy the Pats should at least win the AFC East.I wish the media that ripped the trade would at least acknowledge the economics of the situation.
If anyone here thinks the Pats - with a healthy Brady - won't be a top flight team next year they're deluded. This team is gonna be excellent.
Linked to Pats on DC sports radio in last hour. Lots of interest in him reported. Meds probably fine. Need to get squared away on PEDaI am a big fan of Trent Murphy on the typical 2 year Patriots prove it deal as long as the medicals check out. Could probably slot right into the role they carved out for James Harrison towards the end of the season.
No way the Pats were offering that amount of dough. Could be a very good signing for the Bills.
And I’m sure F and M are delighted. Their next point will be that Brady is trying to replace Bill with Josh.Bedard said on F&M that the Patriots have offered an extension to Brady but Brady is holding it up. He says that Brady is in no rush to help out the team.

Tessitore, Riddick, and Joe Thomas would make a heck of a 3-man booth for MNF.Monday Night Football analyst in waiting?
SI, yahoo, or profootball.com had a good piece on the idea that in recent years, ever escalating caps coupled with teams getting better at keeping their own guys that they really like with early extensions (without completely destroying their cap all the time) have made it so less and less talent actually makes it to free agency now.I mean, these contracts are obscene for pretty meh players
Makes sense. Not sure how much I buy it, but I think there is something there.
I'm not sure i buy it much either, or at least i don't buy it as a sustainable model. If these teams get out in front of the market and extend top players early, only to have lesser players cash in, won't those top players begin to look around and think "why the hell would i negotiate early?"SI, yahoo, or profootball.com had a good piece on the idea that in recent years, ever escalating caps coupled with teams getting better at keeping their own guys that they really like with early extensions (without completely destroying their cap all the time) have made it so less and less talent actually makes it to free agency now.

Yea I mean he is probably trying to ensure that he makes every last dollar on that last big money contract. Its not like winning has ever been important to the guy. And like all players when you get into your 30s you start worrying about your future and finances. This makes perfect sense. Why would he want to help out the team to allow them to put supplemental players around him for a last run or two. Tom is thinking about his future.Bedard said on F&M that the Patriots have offered an extension to Brady but Brady is holding it up. He says that Brady is in no rush to help out the team.
That guy was born to be a Raider.Burfict being traded to Raiders?
I’m sure if Al was alive he’d give up multiple firsts for the honor. That guy was born to be a Raider.
