If Jacoby Brissett is waived to the practice squad, who rushes to sign him? He got two and a half games of heavily protected work and was mediocre.
Jacksonville. Coughlin is picking the groceries there and would be influenced just as much by a Parcells favorite as Belichick.

When you have a team like the Jets, I don't think that the Pats can sneak Brisset onto the practice squad. Even though it was the 4th preseason game, he just showed more than any of the Jets QBs have shown this preseason.

Have you seen other backup Qbs play this pre-season? Brissett looked better than the vast majority of them. "Mediocre" in this case does not seem to be an appropriate choice of an adjective when compared to other backups. My guess is he'll be snapped up faster than Joe Haden if released (and he won't be).
Which team roles with a brand new #2 QB for week 1 of the NFL season with less than a week to learn the playbook and the offense?

They just picked up Bortles 2018 option for $19 Million. That's a lot of money to throw away.

Edit: not just, in May they did.

How much of that $19M is guaranteed. You're also assuming that Bortles lasts the entire year without being injured or ineffective

Brissett's 24, was a 3rd round pick a year ago, has spent 16 months in the NE system, won a regular season game (albeit not with his arm) and showed signs of improvement and progression last night. It's a QB starved league, I have to think someone would take a flier on him if cut. Not to be a #2 necessarily, but someone would stash him as a #3 and see what happens with him I'd imagine.

Yes he looked good last night but that was against players that most of which will be on the street by the weekend. I like Jacoby I really do, but in looking at the roster I think that his spot could be used more effectively in another area. The only reason BB carried 3 QBs last year is because Brady was suspended. It's apparent that BB likes Jacoby, but as we all know he'll do what's best for the football team.

Every other team with a QB battle is already deciding between a couple similar maybe's . I think that leans to him being left off the 53 for someone who would get taken if exposed.
Mediocre? How many backup (hell, 3d stringers) threw four TDs in a preseason game... against anyone? I don't buy the he was playing vs backups argument. Was he the only backup QB in the league to play against backups? My Vikings' fan friend finds the idea that Brissett is not good enough for other teams who are forced to having to decide between "similar maybes" laughable. He'll take him.

Greco is a name to keep an eye out for the #Patriots.

@NateUlrichABJ
#Browns have cut guard John Greco and D-lineman Xavier Cooper, a source said.

Greco is a former 2008 3rd rounder for the Rams who's been playing for the Browns since 2011. Was injured after week 12 last year and put on the IR. If healthy, could be on BB's speed dial after the season starts.

I had the "pleasure" of watching Ryan Mallet play a couple of weeks ago for a half in the one x-game that supposed to mean something.

If Jacoby is cut, people had better have made peace with him being gone.

That's another good landing spot. If we thought it out, we could come up with at least a half-dozen ... particularly some teams that have QBs with running ability (the Bills, for instance) who could use Brissett's mobility in their scheme

Be absolutely shocked if JB is waived. He would be picked but that's not really the issue -- if he is, so be it, you don't keep a guy just to keep him away from other teams. But the Pats are one injury away from needing a good back-up. Having a decent 3rd QB obviously isn't a necessity, but it's a super useful, especially with an aging 1st stringer, and JB is better than what would be on the market should, god forbid, Brady get injured.

I can't believe so many are willing to jump ship on Jacoby. First off, and I know no one wants to believe this, but Brady is human and the cliff is coming. It might not be for 5 years, but it's coming sooner than we all want. Let's say he's awesome again this year and Jimmy moves on next offseason. Do you want to have a 41 year old QB without a viable backup? At that point he'll have 2 full years in the system. That is very valuable

Plus it's not like we are talking about cutting him to keep someone important. We are talking about keeping him over players that probably won't be active game day. Do you really want to play with fire over the QB position to keep a 6th running back or a third TE?

The idea that Jacoby was going to be cut, even without last night's stellar performance, seems really out of whack to me. He's young, leadership up the wazoo, athletic-ish, strong arm. Yes, he's raw, but in his second year getting barely any reps, it's crazy to think they would have just given up on the guy without giving him a real look-see. In my opinion, he was never too close to not making the 53.

He may not wind up being Jimmy G 2.0, but there's enough there to justify a far longer leash than many people her assume(d) he has.

Particularly since he could choose to sign with a different practice squad with a clearer path to playing even if not claimed on waivers

Lions receiving a 6th-round pick in 2019 from the Patriots in exchange for DB Johnson Bademosi, per source.

Supposedly a great gunner, gonna be interesting who he replaces. I don't think he played many defenses snaps though.

I don't see why one more practice is such a big deal. Maybe it makes up for a day off the team got earlier in the preseason.

Bademosi is an interesting move. He is a highly paid special teams ace who plays on the secondary in the same sense that Slater is a receiver.

I wonder if this means Slater is more injured than we know

I have no issue with having the players practice today.

Also it seems like they've added several special teams players via trade in the past week or so. Going to be interesting to see who sticks at the margins.

Was just coming to post that Brisset should have trade value. Odd trade though, Dorsett has been injured and ineffective. Has wheels but that is about it.

Great use of resources IMO. 3 years of control for Dorsett. Fills a need. For our third string QB. Amazing.

I have a lot of questions to how much Dorsett can help in the first part of the year coming into this system without practice/preseason, but that is great value for a 3rd string QB you were going to have to cut.

Belichick be belichicking today.

Was told that while Carr was at practice today, Lucien wasn't. Possibly they knew they were trading for Dorsett but they have hopes of getting Carr onto the PS?

Chris Gasper on TSH this morning castigating the Patriots for having the whole team (all 81) practice today, knowing that more than 20 players would be cut immediately afterward. He likened the players to "disposable razors" that the team was willing to use - and possibly damage/injure - knowing they would not make the team. "And don't call saying these millionaires get paid to play a game - they aren't millionaires. They are guys who made seven thousand dollars or whatever as an undrafted free agent. There's nothing illegal about it but it really seems exploitative to send them out there with "last chance to impress us" because the coaches already know who made it and who didn't. One practice isn't going to make the difference for those 24 guys (or however many there are). Maybe it does for one guy, but the others are being used as [cannon fodder]."

Gasper's right - there's no rule against it, now. But there will be by next summer. The NFLPA should push hard to have cut down day be a practice-free day. This is Belichick operating by the letter of the law and "doing what's best for the team" - but damn if it doesn't seem like they are taking it one step too far. These kids have given their all for the last six weeks. It will be a shame if one of them gets hurt today.
Of course it's cannon fodder, what do you view 90% of the preseason as? They sat, what, 40 players the first week? Something similar on Thursday? Half these guys are nothing more than a 34 year old AAA baseball player, warm bodies for competition for the real guys. They knew 80% of the roster before training camp started. It's nothing new or unique to the Pats and it's nothing that's going to change. It sucks, I agree with you, but it's kind of a reality - some 1200 guys aren't making teams this season. They - and their agent - knew what they were signing up for.

They've acquired three players in the last couple of days...I don't remember this happening before...It's unusual, right?

Pats trade for DE/ST Cassius Marsh from Seattle.
Don't know much about him, but Seattle fans seem pissed.

I'm wondering if they were unhappy with the special teams unit, or if these are just the kinds of players that are available this time of year to make incremental improvements.

It does seem unusual to me.

Rather than being unusual, it may just be the new normal. The Patriots are not the only team making trades. The roster cut down process was changed this year and ton of guys are hitting the market at the same time.

I'm a bit surprised the Pats are trading away so many draft picks since it would seem they can fill some of these holes from just signing today's cuts from other teams. I mean Bademosi and Marsh don't seem anything special and combined, cost 3 drafts choices (5-7).

It's also a carryover from what they did during the draft. Maybe they're two steps ahead of the game and have figured out the next trend for market efficiency. Maybe they're doing it because BB and TB12 are on the back nine and want players who would help immediately
