At least the buffoon in charge has a ridiculous contract and would basically have to repeat last year's historic level of futility to even begin to be in real trouble, and even if he went 0-12 they might be too cheap to fire him. my god how they gave him an extension after a couple mediocre seasons is utterly beyond me.I'll summarize the 2016 BC football season for you:
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Schedule sucks. Team looks shitty. And I'm sure the offense will be boring. Hey, at least the hoops team might actually have a pulse.
He's part of the Burton clan. How big of a loss is this? I'm not a follower of high school recruiting. I know he played in Newton and then moved to Florida to play better competition down there. Just wondering. UCLA is better program than BC so it doesn't surprise me that he would decommit if they were offering him a scholarship.Austin Burton decommits from BC and immediately commits to UCLA.
I'm no recruiting czar but I went to school with the (older) Burtons; he was definitely the best QB South has had that I've seen (not saying much; the previous best played sparingly at Yale). I had no idea he had even committed to BC -- I don't think it's a huge deal. He's probably at least as good as Troy Flutie was at this point but not much more than a depth loss IMO. I'd be surprised to see him be a factor at UCLA.He's part of the Burton clan. How big of a loss is this? I'm not a follower of high school recruiting. That was my thought. You deserve to lose when you give up that play.4th and 19.
4TH AND 19!
Exactly. We suck so much that a loss like this, which would normally be a TOB special that would ruin my fall, simply doesn't matter.I'm not even mad or disappointed. Just resigned at this point. Apple picking season begins early.
We had Freese under Spaz at least. And Aponavicous was decent enough for a college kicker. Never thought I would type that last sentence. Where's Brandon Robinson when you need him? What really shocked me was how pathetic they looked up by 4. They had a chance to kill most or all of the clock against a team that has very little quick-score capability.
3 and out after they had moved the ball very well the whole half. 3 runs up the gut. Even the bobble on third down looked like he was going up the middle with it, maybe even a keeper by a kid who doesn't look very mobile.
Inept kicking game precedes Spaz too, doesn't it?
And that's the issue. The program has gone from exciting to frustrating to apathetic. And if your core fan base doesn't care, you're toast. Year 4 of Addazio and no one cares. This thread was radio silent throughout the summer camp. Today people are upset but resigned to it. That's all on Addazio and Bates failing to deliver on their promises when they came on board.Exactly. The terrifying part is with how easy the OOC schedule is moving forward, and the weakness in the lower half of the ACC they are going to at some point in time mix a 7 or 8 win season into the mix, with all the 4-6 win years, and that will just give them a reason to extent the nimwitted buffoon another 5 years. And that's the issue. Bates will be gone next year but the Dazzler will be here at least 3 more seasons. No way they are cutting him lose and owing him $10M+ in pay. They will keep him through 2018 at a minimum. What you see is what you get. A 6-6 team playing a weak ass OOC schedule and maybe going 2-6/3-5 in conference on a yearly basis. These two have killed that program.
I disagree, I don't believe they can beat teams unless they have a big talent edge. Any FBS win will be an utter fluke.
I'm a little more optimistic than you. No AD worth his salt will take the BC job without express assurances that he can hire his own football coach -- maybe Daz will get one more year past this season, but I don't see the administration tolerating three more years of this shit. And that's the issue. We have talent. We don't have people that can fully harness the talent. But we have a good amount of talent.I disagree, I don't believe they can beat teams unless they have a big talent edge. Any FBS win will be an utter fluke.
I was discussing the state of the program last night with my father. We gave up our season tickets this year after a combined 36 years. Is there a more irrelevant program in the "major" conferences (ACC, Big 12, Big 10, Pac 12, SEC) in football/basketball than BC right now? The only "competition" we could come up with were Rutgers and maybe Wake Forest. Even a school like Kansas that is absolute garbage at football still has an elite basketball program.I'm not convinced this team gets to 6 wins. I think there is a very good chance they go 0 for the ACC once again. Somebody wake me up in 3 years after Daz gets fired. I hate him so much. Only BC would watch Spaz kill the program...and then hire another one. BC fans don't deserve this but the administration absolutely does. The Bates hire was a complete joke and Daz was more of the same. This program will never be good again.
That makes it a bit more frustrating doesn't it? I'm hoping they get that "fluke" win and it's a start down the right road.We have talent. We don't have people that can fully harness the talent. But we have a good amount of talent.
Northwestern went 10-3 last year and was ranked 12 going into their bowl game (they lost the Outback Bowl to Tennessee). They had 10 wins in 2012 and won the Gator Bowl.Northwestern lost to Western Michigan yesterday. They'd give BC a run for their money in any P5 irrelevance contest. Arkansas is sliding into irrelevance too, but that's a recent thing; they've got a lot of history and were good not that long ago.
But yeah, that's a depressing lens through which to view BC athletics. Bad times.
We would be Tulane. A great academic school in a pro sports town where NO ONE other than a few alumni give a rats ass about the athletic program. Horrible football and basketball teams, ok Olympic teams and one really good second tier sport (hockey with BC, baseball with the Green Wave). That is the godfather's lasting legacy.,
Our biggest problem is that we (BC) have no one in the Adminstration who has any institutional memory of what life was like before #22 put us on the national map. I'm about to say something i never thought i'd say but thank god GDF got us into the ACC when we were strong in FB and Hoop, can you imagine where we'd be if we'd be if he didn't? When Leahy became president my biggest fear was that with his Marquette background, he would try to de-emphasize football, he has succeeded in that, and has no problems cashing the ACC checks with little to know investment back into the programs. Bates? google 'empty suit' and you'll see his picture.
The more concerning comp is Northeastern -- their acceptance rate and incoming student SAT scores aren't meaningfully different from BC's. BU is in the same neighborhood (comparable acceptance rate, slightly lower SATs).
Before Flutie, BC didn't enjoy a reputation as an elite academic institution; it wasn't in the same league as Holy Cross, let alone Notre Dame or Georgetown. I'm afraid we're heading back to those days. The decline of the athletic program is part of it, but it's a broader problem than that.
Edit: Holy Cross has gone downhill, so we'll probably stay ahead of them, but you know what I mean.
