There's going to have to be a lot more in return for the first two guys Marquez is signed through '23 with a team option in '24 and Alcantara's not FA eligible until '25.
Correct yeah, and the trade simulator site has them a bit higher. Duran would work as the main piece though.

Schwarber is a quality player and will find a spot somewhere. But I am concerned about the fact he's out right now with a hamstring problem. A nagging injury like that is a mere annoyance for a long term player - but if it recurs even a couple of times in a two month rental you could be looking at 40% of your playing time being compromised. I suppose that makes DH his most likely immediate slot as they try to make sure he's fully healed - but that's not a current hole at all.

If he has to DH, then we are going to see quite a bit of JD in the outfield

This by far is this best thing I've ever heard out of Merloni's mouth.
You know what? Lou is absolutely right. Looking at it in a macro sense, the team needs outfield depth. Any one of Verdugo/Renfroe or even Kike go down, they'd be stuck playing some version of Marwin or Franchy close to everyday. With the Schwarber pickup, this team is way more comfortable finishing out the year with strong bats and additional depth. He boiled it down better than me (or a lot of the posters here) have been able to do. It's a smart move.

Well he’s the guy I’ve been looking at for weeks but he just got hurt so I dunno
Yeah, hard to answer. Do they think Schwarber is the answer at first? Cron may still be in the picture.

Lou hits the nail on the head about the Schwarber addition. View: https://twitter.com/loumerloni/status/1421083426967412739?s=21
I agree with you Red, Lou hits this one on the head. Schwarber is nice depth, and this move kind of reminds me of signing Papi way back in 2003 when Jeremy Giambi was supposed to be the answer at DH. Also we Red Sox fans shouldn't be giving a shit about what the Dodgers are doing. We only have to worry about them if, and it's a mighty big IF, we have to play them in the World Series. I'm happy to see any of the really good players go the the National League if they're not headed to the Sox. I still think Bloom will come up with a first baseman. Personally I'm hoping for Jonathon Schoop, if for no other reason than Mrs. Papo likes his smile on his 2021 baseball card. I trust my wife's intuition

Oof, he gave up 14 hits and 11 runs in his last two starts.
And in his previous 16 starts, he'd only given up 22 runs (101 innings). His ERA despite his recent slump is still just 2.87. Unless his last 2-3 starts are indicative of hitting some sort of wall on the season, I'd be fine with bringing him in and pushing Richards and/or Perez to the pen or out the door.

I’m kinda stunned the Rockies haven’t done much yet (besides Givens). Cron’s injury isn’t major and I can’t imagine he won’t be traded. They’ve got a bunch of pieces to get out the door, starting with Story, and it’s absurd if they don’t move them.

Valid point. It just does seem like his past month of pitching has been suspect at best.

Schoop has seemed like an excellent fit for weeks. Plays both 1B and 2B, having a strong offensive year and a veteran player on a rebuilding team.

Yep. And after ERod’s showing last night I’m sure the need for SP insurance increased exponentially.

It seems like in recent years the day before the deadline has proven to be the busy day. I’m not expecting much to happen today

Gonna need some evidence of that.

Last year, there were four deals on the day before the deadline and 20 trades on deadline day.

In 2019, again four deals on the day before the deadline, and 25 trades on deadline day.

Stuff's going to happen today.

Nice improvement from EdRo!

I have to imagine Houck and Sale help out, even if Sale isn’t “Chris Sale”. Anything to get Richards gone.

But the starting rotation today isn’t the same as it will be in a couple of weeks.
Agreed. We don’t need an ace but a solid #3/4 please?

Sale, Eo, Houck, someone who can throw, and Pivetta/ERod would be fine for me

According to Mark Feinsend the Sox talked to KC about Carlos Santana, but KC did not want to move him. He would’ve been a great 1B option.
Pretty stupid by KC IMO. Do they really think they are likely to be contenders next year? If they’re not, they’ll be back in this position with Santana next year except the offers are going to be lower. And even if they are 1B is not a terribly hard position to improve on the fly.

I dunno, maybe they just think they’ll be able to get more/better offers in the off-season but still seems kinda dumb not to trade him now.

It looks like the Rockies don't want to be seen as sellers. Kind of ridiculous.

I believe the issue is that Santana is a veteran leader in the clubhouse. He's basically their captain. I'd guess that they think there's more value in having him around as a leader/mentor than in acquiring an Aldo Ramirez-like lottery ticket.

Agreed on getting a starter. It is why I was really hoping for Scherzer. If Berrios is remotely reasonable, they should make an attempt to get him. Maybe it would help if we took Sano off their hands?

He may be popular in the clubhouse, and that could be a factor, but the de-facto captain of the Royals has got to be Salvador Perez--Santana has been there 1 season, Perez has played 1000 games, been an 7x All Star, 5 Gold Gloves, 3 Silver Sluggers, and was part of the title team
