Bethel would be an odd choice to cut and re-sign. Since he was signed through next season, and had 550K guaranteed this year, cutting him will put a 1.2M dead money cap hit on their books, re-signing him at the minimum would cost them about an extra million bucks against the cap over just keeping him on the 53.Per Lazar, Bethel is expected back.

Are you sure about that? It seems odd that they'd do something dumb, and I'd think the re-signing would cancel out the guaranty.Bethel would be an odd choice to cut and re-sign. I'd guess they're looking to trade him before he's officially cut by 4PM. Can't see him being back regardless.
It doesn't cancel out the guarantee. They would get a credit on the 2023 cap for his guarantee if they re-signed him now. But he counts as his dead money hit and whatever salary they pay him on this years cap.Are you sure about that? Interestingly he became a Pats because the Ravens were having a roster crunch like this.
It could just be that they don't view that 1.2 mill dead cap hit + league min contract as too much to assume for a player they really want back? Maybe there just wasn't a better option for this money wise if they had to set the IR designations for the 53 man roster first? It doesn't cancel out the guarantee. I don't think they did something that dumb, I think Lazar is wrong in saying he'll be back. It would make no sense.
Take it from someone much smarter than me

I'm kind of thinking that particularly since you might get some cap money back next year. Presumably you're doing this because you think guys like Sam Roberts are really worth hanging on to.It could just be that they don't view that 1.2 mill dead cap hit + league min contract as too much to assume for a player they really want back? Wouldn't there be a better way to do it?It could just be that they don't view that 1.2 mill dead cap hit + league min contract as too much to assume for a player they really want back? Unless they look at Bethel as someone who would be available later in the season. There is still this season's cap to consider, as even a partial season contract would be additive. But perhaps less consequential than the remaining non-guaranteed money on this year's salary plus the per-game roster bonus they would have to pay out. Perhaps a small amount of cap savings in 2022 is still possible depending upon the numbers.Wouldn't there be a better way to do it?
Why would they want to cut Bethel, then re-sign him when that maneuver will count around 3M against the cap instead of the 2M cap hit he has now? Why wouldn't they just do that with say, Joe Cardona? His cap hit would be the same either way.
I could be wrong, but it seems really remote to me that they'd burn a million bucks in cap space when they're already up against it cap wise this season.
Yeah, I don't know man.Unless they look at Bethel as someone who would be available later in the season. His career has to be something of a dissapointment (although seven years in the pros, got that pension, made millions, not too much of a dissapointment!)-I thought he was going to be great coming out of college and he's had flashes, a seven sack year, started some games, but never quite made the leap to the next level.Bummer that Henry Anderson got cut. He's a local kid from around here in GA and I'm pretty friendly with his godmother. He was looking forward to having his first healthy season with the Pats after his injury last year.
I thought this would be a Ross Ventrone post.
True, but they've cut and resigned Murray beforeI thought this would be a Ross Ventrone post.
It just doesn't matter. So much for the Cinderella story.
Maybe we can trade him for Shaq MasonThere's seemingly no chance they move Andrews, but there is a QB very accustomed to playing behind him who lost his starting center during preseason.
What about Ray? Can't believe he'd be cut.View: https://twitter.com/markdanielspj/status/1564734044214018056?s=21&t=d8h5RcgSQFHQy3plkq2Rqw
Daniels:
The Patriot undrafted free agent streak continues. DeMarcus Mitchell has made the Patriots 53-man roster, per source.
He was cutWhat about Ray? Can't believe he'd be cut.
Not misreading it. The two IR moves were to get down to the 53.Apparently Anderson was put on IR, not released. And Wilkerson too!
edit - although maybe I’m reading it wrong and Wilkerson was on the 53 and then immediately IR’d?
Hoyer isn’t there to be a good player, he’s there to help Jones play better. If he does he’s well worth his spotI kind of hate that we cut promising young players to keep 3 QBs, especially given the combination of Hoyer's talent level now (bad) and the likelihood this roster could survive really bad QB play and contend (basically none). But I get that they made that decision months ago when they gave him his contract
I get it, but.... you couldn't get that cheaper? Or agreed to sign him, cut him for 53, then bring him back at more money after you made the IR moves?Hoyer isn’t there to be a good player, he’s there to help Jones play better. If he does he’s well worth his spot
From one old-timer to another: very good. It’s a shame about him.
Yes, since he went on IR to get them to 53.So, and this is where I always get confused, is Wilkerson out for the year with the concussion?
Agreed, but the fact is Hoyer is better than Zappe right now. What stinks more is that they drafted Zappe in the 4th round, which likely influenced their decision to roster him. In the end, though, I'm not sure that they cut a lot of young talent. Ray looks promising, but he was undrafted so there's a chance we see him again. Harris and Sherman were late picks, Asiasi, to this point, was a failed pick, etc. McGrone didn't stand out.kind of hate that we cut promising young players to keep 3 QBs, especially given the combination of Hoyer's talent level now (bad) and the likelihood this roster could survive really bad QB play and contend (basically none). Yes, that was cherce. From one old-timer to another: very good.
I would argue that the 4th round selection probably didn’t influence the decision - they’d have moved on if they didn’t see the potential. At least, I think.Agreed, but the fact is Hoyer is better than Zappe right now. What stinks more is that they drafted Zappe in the 4th round, which likely influenced their decision to roster him. Is there someone you had in mind?
They almost never cut a rookie 4th rounderI would argue that the 4th round selection probably didn’t influence the decision - they’d have moved on if they didn’t see the potential. At least, I think.
