Ah, it's the new year, and we turn yet another page on the Jets.

As is the tradition each year, we start a new thread to discuss, debate, and disparage our AFCE rivals.

For 2014, Idzik is headed into his 2nd year as the GM, armed with millions in new cap space and 12 draft picks. Woody continues to hover, but not rule, over both.

And Rex is back:

There's a New Hope among Jets fans, and it means another highly entertaining and interesting year as us Pats fans observing from our perch.

P.S. For quick reference, link to 2013 thread: http://sonsofsamhorn.net/topic/75778-2013-jets-rex-back-for-2014

To continue the discussion, here's Tony C's last post from the 2013 thread: http://sonsofsamhorn.net/topic/75778-2013-jets-rex-back-for-2014/?p=5187993

Tony C said:
Two articles on ESPN ripping Ryan in a way that the local media (and Cimini on the ESPN blog) won't -- as one of them said, he's too good for copy for them to rip. The snarkier (and more fun) one is summed up by

It really is better to be lucky than good, Rex.

And, more substantively:

In the end, Woody absolved you of your many team-shaping sins. You were right there with Mike Tannenbaum in building the very roster that got the GM fired. You were right there in drafting Mark Sanchez at No. 5 before he regressed on your watch, and before you got him knocked out for the season in a game that didn't count. You were right there with the hirings of Tony Sparano and Tim Tebow, right there in neglecting the offense in a fast-breaking league that keeps embracing rules designed to marginalize the defense.

You were right there in trash-talking the Giants before the Christmas Eve showdown in 2011 that changed everything. Coughlin outcoached you that week, embarrassed you, really, on the way to ultimately beating the Patriots in a second Super Bowl (Coughlin doesn't kiss Belichick's rings, either; he steals them), and your Jets haven't been the same since.

Interesting piece on PFT about Lovie's arrival maybe spelling the end of Revis in Tampa.

Josh will have an interesting decision on Cleveland if it's his decision to make. 37 is young but he cannot afford another HC gig ending quickly in a bad way. Since it re entered the NFL, Cleveland hands down has been the most unstable franchise, and that is saying quite a lot.

Nightmare scenario: Jets invest half of the $30m+ cap space to sign Revis to replace Cromartie

Best-case scenario: Jets spend half of the $30m+ cap space to sign Revis with plenty of other spots to fill

Smith joins an illustrious line of Jets QBs who've had their low points with women shared for all to see, succeeding Sanchez and Brett Favre, and dating all the way back to Joe Namath. A Browning Nagle sex tape seems inevitable at this point. Whatever the validity of this Ballerific lady's account, let's use this opportunity to remind all current and future Jets signal-callers to keep it in your pants.

A reason to be a bit more pessimistic about the 2014 Jets.

In his excellent annual compilation of team-by-team games lost by injuries, the 2013 Jets were the healthiest team in the league, with only 20 games lost.

The interactive graphic is here: http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/dallas-cowboys/headlines/20140107-gosselin-injuries-are-no-excuse-for-another-mediocre-dallas-cowboys-season.ece

AFCE comparision:
  • Patriots: 74 games (3rd most)
  • Dolphins: 41 games (21st most)
  • Bills: 38 games (24th most)
  • Jets: 20th games (32 most)
Significance is that Jets had a paper-thin roster to start with, and managed to keep whatever depth they had. The injuries number may just regress to the mean in 2014, putting a brighter spotlight on the choices Idzik & Ryan make this off season.

“@AdamSchefter: Rex Ryan had 1 year left on deal. His agreed-to extension is for multi years. That ties Ryan to Jets for at least 3 more years, maybe more.”

3+ years?

Agree.

The whole "lame duck" thing I think is overdone.  I can think of only one good reason for current practice -- if a HC goes into his last year, it probably puts you at a competitive disadvantage hiring other coaches, who want job security.  I don't pay enough attention to the Jets to know how many guys they are swapping out, so I don't know how big that consideration is in their case.  But Rex insisted on an extension, and most teams accept the current practice.

From Idzik's perspective, the GM is now tied to Rex.  This was the fish-or-cut bait year. He probably wants Rex happy.

The off-with-his-head stuff is fun, but I would take none of the names recently thrown around, or hired, over Rex to coach this team whose owner loves the circus.

Really? I tend to think of it as an advantage because it releases the coach to think more in terms of the long term, like how Belichick trades down in the draft and rolls over picks to future years. I would think that uncertainty of employment would discourage a practice like that, as an example.

Who has been more entertaining?

Parcells -- he's funny, but also was a dour, bullying, mean spirited sob.

Ditka -- see Parcells.

Mora -- a one-hit wunda, as Parcells would say.

Rex' dad -- by every indication, he was just plain nuts.

You probably have to go back to Bum Phillips.

One good thing about the extension is that it will free the real Rex.  I can hear him now:  *I hafta be myself*

Holy crap.
Scanning Football Ref, #1 would be Bill Parcells, whose tenure was just three years. My other guess was Super Bowl winning coach Weeb Ewbank, who, however, was under .500 at 71 - 77 - 6. Overall, Jets are 373 - 439 - 8 for W, L, T.

Jets quarterback Geno Smith was apparently escorted off a Virgin America flight at LAX today by police after what a witness called a "verbal altercation."
The photo you see above was sent to us by a reader who witnessed the incident and says the shot came "moments before" Smith was escorted out of the airport by cops. Our tipster wasn't the only person who saw it

Doesn't "Looking for Boston Market" have some nice "choking the chicken" allusions?

What an unbelievable waste of a career that guy has had.

Denver, only physically
Continuing with the Kellen Winslow repartee:
1. Given the Vaseline, his favorite QBs were named Griese.
2. He'll get a four game suspension for violating the substance of the NFL's self abuse policy.
3. He'll be kicked out of the NFL and consigned back to the Pee-Wee (Herman) League.
4. He'd get sentenced for his crime and serve hard time, but his political pull will get him off instead.

I do understand that I'll not be allowed to root for the Patriots for the first series of offensive downs in the game tomorrow, given the Wes Welker/foot-jokes precedent.

Think of his dad, literally carried off the field from sheer exhaustion after a stellar performance in what arguably is the greatest NFL game ever played, and probably the hands down winner in terms of sheer excitement.

His mom works in my firm. Saw her last week. This ought to be fun. And awkward.

Ryan plans on "kicking butt" and making the playoffs: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/rex-delighted-new-deal-jets-plan-kicking-butt-article-1.1586017

“My mentality is never going to change,” Ryan told the Daily News on Monday after watching practice at the Senior Bowl. “I plan on kicking some butt. I just want to be a part of this team. This is where I want to coach.”

If Geno makes a leap to even an average NFL QB, and if Idzik makes good of his $30m+ cap, Ryan just may get to do that.

New hope, same as the old hope.

"No, I don't view any free passes," Idzik said. "We hold our players to a high standard -- on the field and off the field. That's part of acting like a Jet. It's not only playing like a Jet, it's acting like a Jet. Everyone understands that."

Because the Jets are noted for their off field professionalism? Hilarious. This franchise is a circus and they either don't know it, are in denial, or are just secretly hoping no one else has noticed.

Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie expects to be released this offseason, making him a free agent.
And if he hits the market, it appears he might be interested in signing with the Broncos or Seahawks for reasons that go beyond the fact they were just in the Super Bowl.
Cromartie said in an interview with Thisis50.com, a website launched by rapper 50 Cent, that he thinks the NFL should take marijuana off the banned substances list.
“They need to just let it go,” Cromartie said, via Brian Costello of the New York Post. “We’re just going to do it anyway. They just need to let it go. They need to go ahead and say, ‘Y’all go ahead, smoke it, do what you need to do.’ “

Hey, you know, if I was about to be in a position where I wanted to earn top dollar from a future employer, I guess I'd think twice about announcing my intention to use illegal substances, particularly if getting caught using those substances would negatively impact my employer.

But that's just me.

Why does he expect to get released? He's one of the few players on that team that can play and Idzik has about a billion dollars in cap space.
