. Usually the guys are garbage but every now and then they get a Dan Connolly or Woodhead.fieldslikebuckner said:Is all this bottom of the roster churn just BB building his shadow roster, or is there some expectation that these guys can actually contribute in non-emergency situations?
They must be adding their real LS to the 53 soon.SeoulSoxFan said:LIke sands through the hourglass...
@MikeReiss: One more roster move on Patriots practice squad today: Long snapper Charley Hughlett has been released.

. Off or Aiken. It's easy to resign one off those guys.SeoulSoxFan said:
With so little time, I am betting over on Nink snapping.
Cutting Aiken and White I get; they knew what they had there, were pretty sure they could sneak them through waivers, and took the opportunity to give a trial to a couple other interesting players.Section15Box113 said:The Highlander has returned.
On mobile, but reported multiple places, including Price:
"The Patriots announced Thursday they have re-signed long snapper Danny Aiken and linebacker Chris White to the 53-man roster and re-signed quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson to the practice squad."

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4768316/patriots-add-three-to-practice-squad-2The Patriots have signed linebacker Darius Fleming, offensive lineman Caylin Hauptmann, and defensive lineman Kona Schwenke to the practice squad. To make room for these players, the team released defensive lineman Cameron Henderson and running back Marcus Thigpen.
Fleming was a member of the Patriots’ 53-man active roster until being released on Sept. 13 to allow for linebacker Deontae Skinner to make the active roster and play in Sunday’s win against Minnesota. Fleming cleared waivers after his release, giving the Patriots the opportunity to bring him back.
Fleming, a fifth-round draft pick in 2012 by San Francisco, has yet to play in an NFL game after suffering two knee injuries in 2012 and 2013.
Hauptmann, a 6-foot-3, 300 pound lineman, was most recently a member of the Cleveland Browns. He was on the Seattle Seahawks’ 53-man roster in 2013, but was inactive in 10 regular-season games, dressed for three and was inactive during the postseason.
Schwenke is an undrafted rookie who spent training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs. He spent 10 days on the Chiefs’ practice squad.
Here’s the current makeup of the Patriots’ practice squad:
RB Jonas Gray
LB Ja’Gared Davis
LB Darius Fleming
OL Chris Barker
OL Chris Martin
WR Josh Boyce
DE Jake Bequette
OL Caylin Hauptmann
DL Kona Schwenke
Those are all considerations, yes. Rotating players also keeps an excess of players in town on the "shadow roster" in case the aforementioned situations dictate it, be it scout team needs, injury concerns at a position, etc.Saints Rest said:Can anyone with more in-depth football knowledge than I explain to me the theories or strategies behind practice squad moves? Especially the on-again, off-agains, like the famous Ross Ventrone. Is it simply about the needs of the scout team and thus are variable dependent on the upcoming opponent? Is it more about developing players for future spots on the 53? Is it about bodies for reps and thus dependent on the varying injury level of different positions? All of the above? None of the above?
The 22-year-old Krause, who played at Vanderbilt, was originally signed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent. Krause (5-foot-11, 190 pounds) totaled 42 receptions for 714 yards and three touchdowns at Vanderbilt in 2013. He returned two punts for touchdowns as a junior in 2012.
Yes. A little curious. I imagine it has to do with Aiken's poor punt snap on Sunday. Wasn't there another bad snap on one of the FGs?Super Nomario said:Charley Hughlett apparently back on the PS: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4773037/long-snapper-charley-hughlett-added-to-patriots-practice-squad
I'm not sure what Belichick thinks will be different this time than the other two times they've had Hughlett and Aiken compete, but we'll see.
There's been some movement, but they've done more adding to the roster from outside the organization this year (Branch, Ayers, Casillas, Blount, Walker) and had Tyms and Browner return from suspension, so there hasn't been as much opportunity to "promote" the PS guys. Gray is only player on the active roster who started the year on the PS, though they promoted and then re-demoted Barker, Skinner, and Ja'Gared Davis.Saints Rest said:Is it just me or has the practice squad been extremely quiet this year?
(I think this thread -- and all subsequent years' PS threads -- should be named "Sons of Ross Ventrone.")
Oh, I totally get why they're looking for an alternative to Aiken - he's not very good. But I'm not sure why they're trying Hughlett, who they already tried out in the 2013 preseason and before Week 1 this year, rather than another long snapper retread.dynomite said:Yes. correct on Ott. BB cut him immediately after that.dynomite said:Yes. A little curious. I imagine it has to do with Aiken's poor punt snap on Sunday. Wasn't there another bad snap on one of the FGs?
Tyler Ott -- the UDFA long snapper from Harvard who was cut in August -- remains a free agent as well. (That said, I think Ott allowed the blocked punt in preseason, so he might not be a worthwhile option)

Long snapper Danny Aiken (concussion) is a new addition to the injury report, as he was limited on Wednesday. Aiken’s injury status coincides with the signing of long snapper Charley Hughlett to the practice squad. Hughlett could provide an option if Aiken is unable to play on Sunday against the Packers.
And Hughlett cut today from the PS (along with Grimble) and Aiken back at practice, so it looks like "Long Snapper Drama, Part II" is over, with the same results as "Long Snapper Drama, Part I."dynomite said:

Aiken hasn't been great this season, so I'm not too concerned about the idea of him missing time. That said, between the hostile environment and generally difficult kicking conditions (freezing temperatures and wind), it's not a great situation into which to toss a guy who was sitting on his couch last Sunday.

They already need to clear a spot for Siliga, so I don't. They already have one WR in Tyms they can't get in the lineup; I don't see what they'd do with Boyce.triniSox said:Do we think Boyce is going to be brought up if Dobson is put on IR? Honestly, I think it could possibly give us a different type of receiving weapon with ability to play the Z receiver in certain sets (especially with Edelman a little banged up)
Agreed with all of this. Would be a good week to have Siliga, too -- the Pats will probably want to rotate DTs to keep people fresh, and the Chargers have talented RBs.Super Nomario said:They already need to clear a spot for Siliga, so I don't. PedroKsBambino said:One part we should note is that Nink did just fine--better than Aiken has last few weeks, IMO. I think their calculus is always 'incremental benefit - incremental risk' (albeit more complicated) and so I'd guess they decided that Nink was not much of a drop-off from Hughlett (which is at least as much about Nink as Hughlett, I'd guess), the risk was manageable (not sure how---I have no clue who the backup was if Nink was hurt in-game), and the upside was worth getting from the extra spot.
While I've been of the view they likely view the option of Nink less negatively than many seem to have thought they did, I also think it's likely Aiken surprised them a bit either by not improving or getting worse at the last minute.

The larger part of the calculus is "what happens if Nink gets hurt on the first defensive series of the game?"
Depth - and specialists to maximize practice time - outweigh the minor improvement on the actual snaps.
