Am I the only one that think Brady kind of looks like Scott Volak in that picture?

Tell me I'm wrong, because that is a terrible omen for the first day of training camp.

Also interesting that Vince isn't especially taped up or wearing a brace or anythign like that.  I'm not sure if you can even do something like that for an achilles.  But from that picture you can't even tell which, if either leg is the injured one.  That might just mean that he is not really doing anything physical today or it means that he is feeling pretty damn good.

@FrankTank96: Tom Brady hits Gronkowski in the middle of the endzone with a laser pass. No worries here. #Patriots

@DougKyedNESN: Aaron Dobson, Alfonzo Dennard, Deontae Skinner, Chris Martin, Dominique Easley, Jeremy Gallon and Tommy Kelly are not practicing.

@NEPD_Loyko: .@scottzolak just said from what he's hearing Jerod Mayo is going to play MIKE LB this year. Would mean Jamie Collins plays on weakside.

Double-fap.  Awesome.  Let Collins just make plays.  Love it.

Great news for people who like watching Hightower chase TEs.

Anyone ever bring small kids to the public practice?  My sons are 2 1/2.  Good idea or not?  (sorry if this is the wrong thread).

My son was 2 1/2 last summer and I took him.  He got bored watching the practice but loved the Fan Zone stuff they had set up.  I'll be taking him again this weekend.

See, I think Hightower would fit best in the Mike role. Let the more athletic Collins and Mayo fly around and make plays. Mayo can still be the green dot and run the D.

Seems a consensus here -- what do they see that we don't?

1.) They trust Mayo covering RB's out of the backfield much more than they trust Hightower. I agree.

2.) With the revamped secondary, any great TE the Pats play will probably be bracketed or covered by the safety.

3.) Hightower will be the first linebacker off the field in the nickel. We all know how often teams play 3+ WR.

I'm not all that worried about Hightower being exposed. They obviously like his ability to play downhill against the run and help protect against the edge.

Sounds about right, and probably lazy to perceive Hightower as Spikes -- DH is certainly more versatile.

From Volin's notes:

Interesting to see Darrelle Revis line up on the same side of the field throughout practice. Also interesting to see 6-foot-4-inch cornerback Brandon Browner lining up against 5-10 receiver Julian Edelman on one play. Browner not only kept up with Edelman, he knocked the pass away.

NT Sealver Siliga, who had three sacks in five games last year after being signed midseason, got a lot of work with the starting defense in Kelly’s absence. Second-year defensive end Michael Buchanan got some run

Down
■ WR Brandon LaFell: Dropped several catchable passes on Thursday, including one during a drill in which there was no defense.

Up
■ WR Kenbrell Thompkins: Strong start to camp with several nice catches, is getting a lot of work in with Aaron Dobson on the sidelines, and during special teams drills got to work with Brady, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, and Rob Gronkowski.

■ OL Josh Kline: Second-year lineman got some work at right guard in Dan Connolly’s spot and could end up competing for the starting job.

■ S Tavon Wilson: Former second-round pick hasn’t played much his first two years, but got some work with the starting defense in 11-on-11 drills at the end of practice.

First day of training camp in a new system, I wouldn't read to much in to Revis staying on one side.

I doubt we'll see anything BUT one-side of the field until public practices are over. And if we see Revis play during preseason games, I'd expect him to stay on one side of the field in the most vanilla coverage assignments possible.

Why show anything before Week One?

He will play as much in the PS as Moss did in 07. Which is next to none.

Not sure how serious this injury actually is, or what he has left, but might he be an option for some TE depth?

Talking about signing Jermichael Finley, there? I just think that's a retirement waiting to happen. The amount of dough it'll require to sign a risky guy just seems way too much. And from his perspective...why sign for less than his insurance money?

No, he was referring to Joel Dressen.

Which is worth even less time than a Finley discussion.

According to Mike Reiss:
- 8,000 fans attended today's practice (non-pads, prior to tomorrow's first pads practice)
- Belichick heaping praise on Mayo, "one of the best glue guys" he has been around

Edit:
- WR Orton carted off with injury.

If the big-name camp injury this year is some guy named Orton, I can deal with that.

BB on Thompkins --

"Hard working kid, hard working kid. One of our hardest workers. Really tries hard to do everything right. Very attentive, very coachable."

There may be several messages buried here in addition to the obvious one to Thompkins.

Got to love hearing things like this about Thompkins.  Talk about a guy who really turned his life around.

It really makes you wonder about all the comments he ever made about Hernandez. Was there a message hidden somewhere in there?

Im just curious if he had anything or anyone specific in mind for a message for that, because I didn't think of anything besides a deserved kiss to a guy who seems to have made real strides this offseason.  BB calls a lot of guys hard workers and obviously values hard work.

We're really getting warm-hearted Belichick today. He's going on and on about hard work for a number of players. I'm guessing the team showed up in pretty good shape.

It might be advisable to get healthy quickly and stay that way. Maybe I'm reading too much into this.

Yeah, I think you are.  I don't think they really want Dobson rushing back from his foot injury for the good of no one.

We've mostly talked about Thompkins as an alternative / backup / competition to Dobson in the X-receiver outside role, but I wonder if he's an option in the bigger slot role that LaFell has played in Carolina the past couple years. Thompkins doesn't quite have LaFell's size, but he would be big for a slot guy and is good at fighting for the ball in the air; he'd cause a lot of problems for the smaller Arrington-type slot CBs.

Intercepted again per twitter. That makes two. Brady against real teams is going to feel like a scrimmage against the JV. Revis is going to sharpen him up.

The competition in practice between those two will be epic all year. I would pay game ticket prices to watch a full practice.
