When I first heard about McCaffrey I figured he must be running up yards against the poorer Pac 12 teams and San Jose State. After all, he's an average looking (albeit good looking) white guy. How good could he be? I don't know, Crazylegs Hirsch, Lance Alworth, Hugh McHelhenny, who are his comps? Edelman with (a lot) more speed?
Reggie Bush is a comp.

some of you upthread wanted Iowa instead of MSU?? This team is a joke.

The ratings from yesterday are down 33% or more from last year's semi's, significantly worse than what was expected. The games today will be down even more, I suspect, because there is no lead-in with the semi-final games and there is a realization that none of these games matter at all. Plus, none have been even remotely interesting. Nice job by ESPN.

Re Ukropina and his changing numbers, when Marshawn Lynch was at Cal, he was #10, and they had another number 10. From the stands, you couldn't tell one from the other. Why do they do that?

Some teams have over 100 players, so a guy on defense and a guy on offense might have the same number. If they are on the field at the same time it's a penalty.

I didn't know teams could exceed 100 players. That's dressed, I assume (or there wouldn't be a problem).
Yeah, 83 (I think) scholarships, but walk-ons increase the roster. Nebraska used to have dozens of walk-ons, according to wiki they had 141 players on their roster for the 96 Fiesta bowl, so almost 60 walk-ons. Most never play but it's a big tradition for some schools

IMO, it's a big mistake to have the semi final games on New Years Eve; understood it's based somewhat on bowl game rotations, but I heard today the New Years Eve scenario is locked in till 2025? People have plans on New Years Eve, whether it's dinner, house parties, nightclubs/concerts, all this does is water down the ratings. Not to mention, like you said, the New Years day games are now totally meaningless.

Games like this make me dream of Texas luring Shaw after they fire Strong next season.
here's the thing, is there a better job than Stanford? Don't have to deal with idiot recruiting, get paid a ton, live in a nice place, and entree to the NFL if wanted. don't have to deal with the idiot boosters at Texas, etc

Plus Shaw is a Stanford alum who grew up in the Bay Area when his dad was coaching at Stanford. Hard to see him leaving for another college job unless he gets offered a huge amount of money, but if he leaves for money it's probably to the pros, where he'll have plenty of suitors.

Don't get the recruiting part.
Stanford is going to attract a lot less knuckleheads or "bad seeds" than most of the big time programs. Show isn't going and taking kids with bad grades, criminal records, etc. Smart kids that are good players automatically have Stanford on their lists, the school recruits itself but at a different level.

and the thing is, they put a lot of guys into the pros, so its not like they are going after 3 star or less guys only.

Stanford's recruiting target list is generally smaller than other schools as well, so their coaches spend less time recruiting. They know the players they want fairly earlier, and cull everyone without the grades. They also get a lot of second generation players, Sanders, McCafferey, Luck. There are downsides, like not being able to go after the top players some years, but focusing on a refined list earlier mitigates that. Instead of wasting time on guys they probably won't get, they write those guys off completely at the start

Shaw, a former Raiders assistant, declined the opportunity to interview for the Raiders job last year. He also knows exactly how Baalke & Jed treated Harbaugh. He ain't going to the NFL and there is very little chance he goes to Santa Clara if he would. The Maras or Ross could offer him too much money to turn down, but I just don't see him leaving yet.

Clears and Pouls, I get it about recruiting being different at Stanford. Cal supposedly has high entrance requirements too, but Marshawn Lynch and DeSean Jackson got in there.

Cow tipping, drunk cow, corn maze, Stanford tree chasing cow, sad cowboy. Farmers only jingle. (According to twitter)
I was there. It was pretty PG compared to past shows. I think the on field performance at that point had more to do with the response.

It's historically been a horrible job. You can't recruit against U$C or Oregon, and you can't get paid as much as you could at any other D1 school.

Haaaaaaaa yes. That MIGHT be true now. It was the exact opposite of true for like 40 years. We have always had to chase the academically inclined leftovers from top programs. The admissions hurdle is very real. To be this good they have to bat almost .750 on the kids who meet the admissions hurdle.
