Mexico tied 10 man Guatemala 0-0. Ouch.
T&T beat Cuba and leads the group. They'll have to hold Mexico to a draw to win the group, though, and they aren't going to do that.
They were only at 10 men for about 15 minutes, so it's not like Mexico had all day to score against a reduced side.
With that said, they should have been at 10 men for a lot longer than they were. The ref gave a yellow to Guatemala early in the first half when he would have been perfectly justified to give a straight red for a vicious, high studs tackle. A few minutes later, he missed a completely and utterly blatant hand ball in the box that should have been a straight red and a penalty. The guy was completely out of his depth. At one point, he fell during a Guatemala counter attack and was thus unable to see a blatant hand ball by a Mexican defender that halted the break. It's frustrating that the "best officials in the world" is really just code for "the best officials from underrepresented countries who couldn't even officiate a U-13 game".

Mexico waited way too long to bring on Gio. Why Herrera was playing defensively was confusing. Layun was minimized in the flat 4 especially against a parking break Guatemala. Love seeing Mexico having all to play for in the last group stage.
I couldn't figure that out either. Gio was exactly the type of player they needed to help bridge the gulf between the midfield and Vela/Peralta but he came in with 10 minutes left and, making matters worse, was planted out on the left wing.
I don't think they were playing defensively. One of the things the announcers were noting was that the issue with the fullbacks being unable to press up the field was because the midfield was out of position for most of the game. They especially noted that Guardado, who was supposed to be playing the left wing, wound up playing more of a holding mid position on the right side much of the time (which is apparently where he plays for PSV). This resulted in Layun being unable to do his overlapping runs because it would have left the left side of the defense completely vulnerable. They also noted that Vela was dropping too far back, leaving Peralta isolated and outnumbered. To me, that's on the manager to not correct those issues and frankly they were fortunate to get out of there with the draw. Guatemala had a golden opportunity given to them on a silver platter by Vazquez - who looked completely out of sorts the whole game - and only couldn't capitalize because they could only manage two players on the break. I saw a lot of the same issues that they've had for a long time now and it's frustrating to see the same lack of a clue on how to unlock a packed in defense that has plagued them for years (I realize that's easier said than done).
On a related note, I really can't emphasize enough the massive difference in quality between Mexican and American broadcasts. There's no way in hell you would get that kind of depth of commentary from the goons at Fox. I imagine they spent the whole game talking about Ochoa's hair cut.
