Brandon Marshall says that Smith did not instigate, and did not put his finger in IK's face.

"Did he put his finger in his face? No, he didn't," Marshall said on Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio. "Geno Smith, he didn't do anything wrong that day. It's just an unfortunate situation.

Marshall told Fox Sports that Smith "did everything the right way" on that fateful day in the locker room.

Sure, Smith did everything the right way.  He blew off his commitment to his lower-paid teammate and stiffed him for the air fare, but did it "the right way,"  That makes it all good.

Jets look miserable in early moments of the preseason game at home against the Falcons.

Offense incapable of doing much beyond 2-yard passes to Ivory.  Defense surrenders a long play on a pass in the flat to a fullback (Coples gets lost), then a DPI on Revis in the end zone sets up a short plunge.

Second drive sees Jets go three-and-out, then a long Hester punt return puts the Falcons in the end zone two plays later.

I forgot how much I enjoyed watching the Jets.  [With apologies to Fitzy.]

I'm a Fitzy fan, going back to his college days.  One of my favorite players in the NFL... which leaves me feeling conflicted seeing him wear that uniform.

But yeah, his play was less than inspiring.  Completed plenty of two-yard passes.

Fitz had a 4.8 YPA against the Falcons starting unit (ouch.)

The Jets DL is a beast with two-heads though. The second half unit started Babin & Richardson. Completely mauling Falcons backup OL.

Three Jets - WR Jeremy Kerley, RB Daryl Richardson and S Durell Eskridge - suffered concussions during Friday night game vs. Falcons

Three more guys get their brains scrambled, just another day in the NFL.  Erik Kramer, oft-concussed during his NFL career, shoots himself.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-erik-kramer-shot-met-0822-20150821-story.html

I haven't heard much mention of Kramer.  He's only a player, and one more is (almost) gone.  The NFL is delighted that everyone is talking about disputed inflation levels in footballs, and the accompanying pig circus surrounding it.  I'd say it's Machiavellian, but the dipshits running things aren't smart enough to manufacture this themselves.  They bumblefucked into it, then opportunistically exploited it beyond proportion to help distract from the concussions and suicides.  I feel filthy paying attention to this league.

Great article on Football Outsiders on how Fitzpatrick is unlikely to be better than Geno Smith:

Fitzpatrick continues to get opportunities in the NFL, even if just as a backup, because of how he fails. How you fail as a quarterback in the NFL is very important to coaches. If you stick to the design of the play and play from the pocket but simply can't execute the way you need to, you are much more likely to hang around a team over a player who stands out more as an individual but relies more on his creativity than the coach's creativity. Furthermore, if you have consistent subtle failures instead of less regular major failures, you will be viewed more favorably from a distance. That is where Fitzpatrick falls.

I love this graph

Fitzpatrick is one of the least intelligent quarterbacks to have seen the field during the regular season over recent years. His Harvard education, though often pointed to, carries little applicable value. Not until Harvard revamps its class structure to let students knock each other out while trying to read a blackboard with NFL coverages on it from 20 yards away will any form of that academic education become relevant to being an effective quarterback. What is relevant is what Fitzpatrick has repeatedly done throughout his career: make bad decisions on the field

If there's anything that irritates me it's tv announcers pontificating about someone's intelligence because they went to some Ivy or other top rated college. One, it totally disrespects that sorts of intelligence that actually do matter when playing a sport...quite a bit different than academic intelligence. Two, it buys into some myth that kids at those colleges are some sort of higher species, when for the most part they just have some sort of privilege into which they were born. Plenty of idiots at Ivies and elsewhere.

Fitzpatrick scored a 48 on the Wonderlic. I think he's a pretty lousy example for your rant. :)

Glad you got that off your chest. Now go take the time to examine the actual demographics at these school. I'm willing to bet a pretty good paycheck that they do more in the way of breaching traditional class and racial barriers than your average football mill.

I thought it was pretty clear that I was referring to the "idiot" portion of the rant.

There are plenty of idiots and people who get in because of some consideration other than intelligence at Ivies. Fitzpatrick's sort of a weird target though.

Fitzpatrick wasn't the target of my rant. Announcers who assume an ivy league pedigree=intelligence were the targets. Certainly there are lots of smarties at Ivies, too, quite possible that he was/is one of them. The apt point about his lack of football smarts makes my first point, in any case.

My college roommate at Harvard played 9 years in the NHL, some of which were pretty good.  Great guy, big heart, hard worker, loved hockey to the end of the world -- but not hardly a Nobel Prize candidate.

Every time I saw him play on TV, some announcer would cite his Harvard education and describe him as a "Professor of the locker room" or some such.  Which was patently hysterical.

Edit:  But yeah, Fitzy's not that guy.  He's legit.

Edit #2:  And I wouldn't get taught generalizing in the other direction either -- my old roommate may not have been valedictorian material (by which I mean not giving the speech, but knowing how to spell "valedictorian"), but I' d still take him in a game of Boggle against some player who went straight from home-schooling into juniors.  Or anybody from Yale.

I hate to add to thread derailment, and this isn't in response to anyone's post, but I want to add something about "smarts". I think that, in sports, much more important than how well you think is how fast you think. I can do general relativity using tensor calculus, so I'm fairly confident that I could break down an opposing defense from the perspective of a QB; I'm 100% sure that I could not do it before getting (perhaps literally) killed by the pass rush.

Oops.

@AroundTheNFL Jets announce they've placed tight end Jace Amaro on IR

@MMehtaNYDN Jace Amaro (shoulder) placed on injured reserve. It's a labrum tear. Will have surgery. Out for year #nyj

This makes Jeff Cumberland & Kellen Davis as the starting two. Possibly the worst TE group on the AFC.

As much as the Jets are excited about this year (and for many reasons they should be), any non-DL draft picks should have them think twice.

Random thought: Jets should call up the 49ers and see if they're willing to part Vernon Davis.

Niners are going nowhere, and Davis played for Roman from 2011 through 2014.

Nugget from Cimini, regarding the loss of Amaro: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/53739/explaining-why-loss-of-jace-amaro-isnt-crippling-for-jets

If Gailey leans toward the system he used as the Buffalo Bills' coach from 2010 to 2012, the Jets will be all about the wide receivers. In those three seasons (covering 2,989 offensive snaps), he employed a four-receiver package a league-high 586 times, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He used three receivers for 1,669 snaps, fifth in the league. He used two tight ends for only 341 snaps, 32nd in the NFL.

If the preseason is an indication, Gailey appears to be taking the same approach. Only five of the Jets' 51 completions have gone to tight ends, including only one to Cumberland.

The emergence of Quincy Enunwa as a potential contributor also could be a factor in the overall strategy. It might be a stretch to say he's a hybrid wide receiver/tight end, but he has the size (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) and blocking skills to handle some tight-end responsibilities. This is one of the reasons why they're smitten with him, dropping Jeremy Kerley on the receiver depth chart.

Enunwa is really too small to play anything but a tweener role. Fitz loves to check down. Marshall has been a shrewd signing.

To build off this (and sorry about taking it in a hockey direction), hearing from a relatively smart and well adjusted NHL guy that went through the most recent lockout, the Ivy guys were the ones that spoke up the most because they knew their shit and understood what they were doing. The hilarious part is that it was a goon squad of fourth liners like Parros and Westgarth speaking up. And everyone from the NHLPA side respected their opinions. Westgarth was basically blacklisted for a few months even though he was a very serviceable fourth liner. Of course he went to Dartmouth for school and turned into a hockey player so everyone has a journey.

Nothing to really do with the above but loved hearing about some inside baseball stuff and figured some others would enjoy.

Jet look miles better than the 2014 squad.

I did enjoy Tebow being the best QB on either team this evening.

I've got to say I'm excited for this season.

I listen to the Jets Kingdom podcast and they're hyped for this season.  They are convinced that this will be the best Jets offense in at least six years.  (Essentially Gailey has a system that's close to unstoppable with a smart quarterback because it always gets one on one matchups somewhere and since Fitzy is so smart he'll recognize those matchups, plus the oline is great and the running attack is great).

I truly believe this will be a godawful offense (Fitzpatrick might have gone to Harvard but he's a bad decision maker, the skill players are pretty mediocre, and the line wasn't great last year and doesn't look to be much better this year)  so watching everything they love turn to ash will be exquisite.
Can't wait!

@MMehtaNYDN Jets will place RB Stevan Ridley, rehabbing from ACL injury, on the PUP list to start the regular season, per sources. #nyj

Why not release Ridley and pick up Gray? A healthier and younger back.

Hmm, why not the ubiquitous Beats or upscale brands like Grados or Beyerdynamics you say? Only Bose sets allowed in NFL after a sponsorship deal:

http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/4/6907355/nfl-bose-sponsorship-deal-bans-beats-headphones

The news comes after a new sponsorship deal signed with Bose over the offseason that saw it replace Motorola as the provider of sideline headsets. Bloomberg reported at the time that Motorola had paid roughly $40 million a season for the privilege during its 13-year run with the NFL.

P.S. Still Kudos for Revis to even thinking of gifting his teammates.

Bose being a Framingham company, I assume that Belichick has had them all bugged and/or has had Bose install a special chip that subliminally plays the phrase, "Buttfumble," when they are listening.
