There are all sorts of complex scientific and technological concepts I manage to grasp with relative ease. But two things I'll never be able to wrap my head around:

1) How elite pro golfers can both perfectly read the breaks and undulations of interminably long putts -- such as the one Phil just sank -- and execute the perfect stroke to lead their ball on the visualized trajectory.

2) Why we just can't print more money.

I'm just so happy that Tiger is sort of back.  Even if we get an 80% of normal Tiger Woods going forward, the PGA Tour/WGC/Ryder Cup and everything else just got so, so much more awesome.

And IMO, this year has already been one of the most exciting to watch as a golf fan.  Every Thursday-Sunday is becoming must see television lately.

Shit. That epic shot by Rose out of the 16th bunker deserved to be called live by Verne Lundquist.

4 straight birdies by Rose, including a chip in from the bunker on 16 gets him to -11.

I feel like these guys are all playing for second though.  Spieth doesn't seem to have the major chink in his armor required to blow this lead.

Nobody has ever played four rounds in the 60's at the Masters, right?  I  want to see Spieth at least par in for 69 today so he has a shot at that tomorrow.

Fucking unbelievable that Spieth has played two Masters, and he's going to play in the final group in each of them.

Tomorrow is going to be great, especially since you know we're going to see some insane pin placements. Don't think the greens crew won't be out late tonight and early tomorrow rolling and cutting to make this hard tomorrow.

I basically agree.    he guy who finish the day 10 under or better will at least have a chance.    It is a gettable course and Phil or Rose could put up 63/64 on Sunday and steal it even if Speith has an ok day

On the other hand guys down in the Rory/Tiger range would need.    An incredible round, plus Speith to have a poor round,  plus no one in the -10 -12 range to have a good day

Spieth just doesn't make that many huge mistakes off the tee, and his putter is the best in the world right now.  It's those two aspects of the game that really determine how well or how poor you play at Augusta, and unless the driver or the putter or both completely leave him tomorrow, and someone goes really, really low, I just don't think he's going to blow this lead. He doesn't have the kind of game that brings doubles and triples into play, and he would need to at least have a couple tomorrow for someone to realistically catch him, I think.

The way it stands at this moment, if he shot 75 tomorrow, Mickelson or rose would have to shoot 67 to beat him.  If he shoots 72, that number goes to 64.  Anything under par, and someone is going to have to fire a course record, and then some to beat him.  That's crazy.

I will admit that it is becomes fait accompli early in the day, I will end up rooting for Speith to shatter every record there is

How do they select the pairings when people are tied? Johnson needs to play with one of the 5 players at -6. Can they just put him with say casey and then have Rory / Tiger line up?

Isn't it based on when they finish, order wise, the prior day?  ie. who was in the clubhouse first, plays with the guy who went in next, etc.

So why were their people standing 40 feet in front of Speith on the line he was playing on 17.

Great thanks. So Rory came in first and gets the later tee w Johnson it seems.

Yeah, first to post the number goes out last the next day. So, for example, Mickelson has posted -11. if Hoffman or Rose post -11, Mickelson goes out with Spieth tomorrow.

I think he'll hang on, but I disagree about his consistency off the tee. Despite his success, he's been outside the top 100 in driving accuracy this year and last, and he's been known to throw up an 80 (tour championship last year comes to mind). He's got the short game, but his driving, both length and accuracy mean to me that the door is still at least a bit open.

Yeah, but even that miss is really only about 10 yards off line.  Maybe he makes bogey, maybe not, but I don't think you see him put a ball in the water, or pull hook one about 50 yards.  I suppose he could get unlucky and possibly leave himself in a spot where he can't advance the ball, and open the door for a double bogey that way.  For the most part, Augusta is so clean around the edges though that unless you end up immediately behind a tree, you'll usually have a shot to hit it forward, like he just did, and then try to get up and down for par.  And the way he's putting and chipping, he's getting up and down pretty much 80% of the time, if not more.
