Tigers begin retooling(?): Maybin to Angels http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/11/tigers-trade-cameron-maybin-angels.html
Ruiz really looked his age with the Dodgers. I wonder how much he has left
Not really imo. When you are playing the long game, sometimes taking the classy path pays better long term dividends then sweating some small print quality or lottery ticket return built around a rather shortsighted "something now is obviously better then nothing" principle. Which was realistically going to be the case there, regardless where the current state of free agent pitching resided at.Cubs decline Hammell's 12 million dollar option.
What an odd move
Isn't the more likely explanation that the late season "elbow tightness" is something real and they don't care to pay an extra 10 million for him to spend the year in rehab? Not really imo. Say what you want about Theo (and I still don't forgive him for Crawford) but the guy has always been a pretty good bet to take care of his own. I'd of expected DD to do the same thing with Buchholz in the event he had no plans to slot him into our 2017 rotation.
I think that possibility combined with his age, salary, and late season decline was enough to warrant Theo deciding to go in a different direction. Plus hurt the chance to begin with that any team was going to give up much in terms of asset value to take the 1 year flyer.Isn't the more likely explanation that the late season "elbow tightness" is something real and they don't care to pay an extra 10 million for him to spend the year in rehab?
Crazier prediction: it's from the Yankees. This tweet from Rosenthal, if it came true, would make Porcello's contract look like a bargain.
Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 1h1 hour ago
Craziest prediction I’ve heard so far from a GM: Ivan Nova, five years, $75M.
Colon had 191.2 IP and an ERA+ of 120 last year and has had the lowest walk rate in the league two years in a row. 12.5 mil on a one year deal for a team with tons of payroll room like Atlanta is a no-brainer .surprised the Mets didn't give him the Wakefield treatment.
$12.5 mil from the Braves? Are 40 yo SP the new market inefficiency?
Braves had the 3rd worst record last year and are in rebuild mode. Why spend $20 on two old pitchers to hopefully go from awful to mediocre?Colon had 191.2 IP and an ERA+ of 120 last year and has had the lowest walk rate in the league two years in a row. 12.5 mil on a one year deal for a team with tons of payroll room like Atlanta is a no-brainer .
New stadium, I guess. They have to have some product to get people to show up.Braves had the 3rd worst record last year and are in rebuild mode. Why spend $20 on two old pitchers to hopefully go from awful to mediocre?
85 wins gets you in the WC race. And if it doesn't work out, maybe you have a nice trade chip in July.Braves had the 3rd worst record last year and are in rebuild mode. Why spend $20 on two old pitchers to hopefully go from awful to mediocre?
Well if either are pitching well they can always flip them at the deadline for a lotto ticketBraves had the 3rd worst record last year and are in rebuild mode. Why spend $20 on two old pitchers to hopefully go from awful to mediocre?
Between that and having extended Smoak this summer, they sure seem like they don't expect Encarnacion back. Not that either signing closes the door, but they've got EE's spots filled for the moment. It's a done deal.

kendrys morales has a deal with jays. @DfineNrmLC is onto it
Yeah, I'm more upset about losing Colon than I will be about Cespedes, to be honest. I can understand it (12.5 million is a lot for a 44 year old pitcher), but still.surprised the Mets didn't give him the Wakefield treatment.

It's weird, at the end of the season they basically told the league "we don't want this guy around." He must be an epic asshole, but who knows. Is Billy Beane still a good GM? This move seems like he sold low on Valencia.
Astros trade for McCann and sign Reddick to 4yr deal
Yikes. Heyman and MLBtraderumors projected 3/$18. How much are chapman/jansen going to get?Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 53s54 seconds ago
Left-handed RP Brett Cecil agrees to a deal with the Cardinals, per team source, pending a physical. Deal for four years, may exceed $30M.
Probably double what Cecil gotYikes. Heyman and MLBtraderumors projected 3/$18. How much are chapman/jansen going to get?
