19-5 in their last 24 games. And agree on Atkinson - he has done a fantastic job this season.

Kudos too to Sean Marks who has done an impressive job retooling the franchise. He found Dinwiddie on the street, found Harris in a similar fashion, brought in Russell, Carroll and Crabbe via some creative trades and made moves to draft Allen. Then he signed Napier and Davis from the Blazers. When you look at his body of work and the fact that he has done all this in the space of the last two+ years its all the more amazing.

And in your periodic ROY leader highlights...

Luka had 32 points, eight boards and eight assists. He is only the third teenager in the last 35 years to record that stat line. The other two are LeBron and KD.

Have to hand it to the Raptors, getting Kawhi + Green was highway robbery. Green played some excellent defense against Harden in the 1st half
Getting Danny Green as a throw-in was such a steal. All he does is play great perimeter defense, knock down threes and has a history of playing well in the playoffs. Guys like that should not be that easy to get.

I've been on the Marks/Atkinson bandwagon for a while. Your post is money and then look at the draft. Levert, Allen and Kurucs. There's a great article out there about how they have been tracking Kurucs since he was 16. He was buried in the Euro League (44 minutes total last season) but when Marks and the scouts looked at his game they saw that it would translate well to the NBA style.

Brooklyn's goal this year was to build the base so that they could show potential FA's that they're coming to a team that has a great culture (they've worked hard to create a Celtics/Spurs type family culture over the last few years) and a team that just needs a few top level players.

My feel is that the Nets will let Russell walk and make a strong move for someone like Kemba. To me he would be the prefect fit from a culture and effort aspect. He keeps himself in perfect condition and is a local. Make that happen and maybe Durant will take a meeting with them.

Agreed.

I think they will make overtures to Kyrie as well and he should listen, especially if Durant considers the Nets too (Durant should probably never play for a NY/Boston/Philly team given the way he appears to handle his critics. I know Jon Abbey suggested that NY would treat him differently but having lived there, I don't buy it).

To me the biggest risk to Kyrie leaving isn't him making a long speculated move to the Knicks or reuniting with LeBron in LA. Its joining this evolving young core in Brooklyn.

This is great news. Dude always seems to hurt the Celtics.
Not to mention that it leaves Milwaukee one fewer adjustment option if Lopez can't hold up in space in the playoffs.

This is also a "there but for the grace of god go I" type thing for the Celtics. I definitely thought we'd see something public like this from Rozier or Brown after the first month of the season.

Woj says Thon Maker’s agents are pushing for a trade to a team that will give him a bigger role.
Why's he agitating for this now (I know, the trade deadline)? But still, he's on a really good Bucks team that could end up in the finals. If I were him, I'd wait for the offseason. Another thing: he's really not that good, from what I've seen of him. I'm not sure he's going to flourish anywhere else. He shoots threes well against the Celtics for some odd reason, but he's only .333 3 pt. shooting on the year, 2/10ths of a percentage point below league average.

Isn’t there an evolving young core in Boston too?

Of course. I don't see him leaving as my base case but if he has a change of heart, Brooklyn ticks a lot of boxes for the guy. Close to "home", good talent and well coached. Its more plausible to me than a reunion with LeBron.

Some folks around these parts think the combination if Hayward's injury and non linear recovery as well as Stevens inability to get the most out of this team will drive Irving away. I don't agree but I am not as familiar as some with the inner workings of the Celtics locker room.

Edit: to clarify, I am not in market, I don't listen to Boston sports talk radio and most press I consume is more of the national variety so I may be missing the buzz that informs those people who think Irving is now a flight risk.

Maker isn't going to get many minutes in Milwaukee the remainder of the year and when he does his role will be limited so getting to The Finals while sitting on the bench isn't going to enhance his value which is the only thing his agent should be concerned with at this stage. His agent is doing the right thing to get him out of a place he really has no right to be on a contender as his rookie contract winds down. Maker needs to be moved to a lottery team to get opportunities to put up numbers and have a chance to grow his game enough for teams to be optimistic on his future as he hits FA.

Look at another limited guy like Gorgui Dieng who was able to put up enough numbers and intrigue Minnesota enough for him to sign a 4/$62m second contract. The only way this was possible was due to playing minutes on god awful teams whereas if he were sitting on the bench for a contender during these years he never gets an opportunity and never gets anything near that contract. Maker's agent is trying to get him to a lottery team where he can get 25-30 mpg in the years leading up to FA just as Dieng did to have some leverage on that all important second contract.

Listening to Boston sports talk radio likely pushes one further away from what is going on.

They've lost 3 of those games and he's -41 in those games.

In a game they won by 20, he was only +4
In a game they lost by 4, he was -9
In a game they lost by 6, he was -21
In a game they lost by 12, he was -15

On court he was -41 in 128 minutes. In the other 64 minutes he wasn't on court his team was +39.

Didn't we always think he could put up numbers on losing teams?

I don't think the questions about Okafor concerned his ability to play at the NBA level. They were more existential in nature in that his skill set doesn't mesh with the current style of play.

This is true of just about any big and more than a few wings and ballhandlers who either cant shoot and/or defend away from the rim.

With that Pelican starting unit going up against the starting 5 they have faced I would expect all of their starters to be in the negative. The +/- insanity is taking on a whole new extreme of ignoring context imho.

I don't think anyone doubted Okafor's offensive ability anyway. It's his defense.
This article says that JH has been good at least at the rim: "In addition to his 1.8 blocks per 36 minutes, Okafor is currently the Pelicans best defender at the rim as opponents have combined to shoot 47.4% at the hoop against him. That’s a much stronger figure than Gobert’s 56.7 FG% allowed at the rim as well as Jordan’s 58.9%. In fact, among all players who have appeared in a minimum of 25 games, no one has recorded a stronger field goals defended at the rim percentage through this point of the season."

I'm on record saying I wanted the Celtics to take a flyer on him (no acquisition cost). He's still young and he can clearly score. In the right situation, I think he could be a rotation player. With that said, the questions with Okafor are mostly defense related and I don't think he's answered any of those questions in 4 games. If he can develop on that end of the court, he goes from being like Enes Kanter to being like Clint Capela. He has the size, length and athleticism to be at least an average defender but the effort hasn't been there in the past. He has been decent at blocking shots but maybe to his detriment. Okafor looks to be in the shape of his life right now though so maybe he's finally motivated.

He's also hard to get a read on since he hasn't really played much the last 2 years. Has he improved as a rebounder or is it just sample size and reduced role? In today's NBA, I think there is a role for "traditional bigs" if they are very good offensive rebounders. As everyone moves away from the rim, the players who have stayed close by are grabbing more rebounds than they were even 5-6 years ago. There are 17 players this year averaging 10+ rebounds a game. In 2012, there was 8. In 2013, 8. In 2014, 15, and 16 there were 10. In 2017, 12, last year 11. On top of that, they are getting really easy lay ins because there's no one in the paint. 6 guys are currently shooting over 60%. From 2012-Last year, there was 1, 1, 2, 1, 3, 4, 4. Okafor was not a decent rebounder in his rookie year though, and the sample size since is too small and sporadic to read much into.

I could easily see Okafor averaging something like 15 points, 8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game on 60% shooting in 25-30 minutes a night. I'm just not entirely sure he'd be a net positive doing it because his defense is very much in question. In a 15-20 minute role off the bench where they use him against other teams 2nd units or in match ups that favor him, I could see him offering positive value. In the event he turns into an average defender, that changes everything.

It's funny because I could see him doing well alongside someone like Anthony Davis who would help hide his flaws but a healthy Anthony Davis means no playing time for Jahlil Okafor. He's probably not the best fit with Julius Randle either, although Randle has improved his range this year.

I know he qualifies using the minimum of 25 games, but that seems very disingenuous since he's only played a total of 368 minutes. Gobert is at 1585, Jordan 1498.

With that said, it's still a good sign. Like I noted above, the tools are there. He's close to 7 feet tall with freakishly big hands, a 7'5 wingspan, and a 9'2.5" standing reach all while being pretty agile for his size.

Turner's skillset is so hard to replace, even if he continues to struggle shooting from distance.
I was just looking around the league and saw this

Turner has been on a tear shooting the ball.
first 23: 11.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.7 blocks on .484/.206/.724 shooting in 27.5 mpg. 7/34 from 3.
last 20: 14.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.9 blocks on .518/.517/.643 shooting in 28.9 mpg. 30/58 from 3.

For the year, he's now at 12.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.8 blocks, .501/.402/.690. 37/92 from 3.

No one in the NBA has ever average 2 or more blocks while shooting at least 40% from 3 (minimum of 80 3PA).

Players who came close
Raef Lafrentz 01/02 at .388 and 2.7.
Serge Ibaka 14/15 at .376 and 2.4
Ths year, Brock Lopez is currently at .383 and 2.1.
Kristaps 17/18 at .395 and 2.4.

If you lower the 3PA to 10 you get these 3 players
McHale went .553/.405/.829 in 1991 with 2.1 bpg but he only attempted 37 3s.
Hakeem went .528/.421/.716 with 3.7 bpg in 93/94 but on 19 3 point attempts.

and Myles Turner.

Players close to or over .50/.40/.90 this year
Brogdon .518/.423/.961
Durant .509/.381/.906
Curry .495/.423/.931
Tobias Harris .504/.439/.883
Marcus Morris .476/.422/.865
Hield .479/.460/.862
Rudy Gay .524/416/.869
Malik Beasley .486/.417/.929
Derrick Rose .480/.417/.854
Bertans .494/.486/.852
Meyers Leonard .534/.448/.875
McDermott .473/.393/.875
Irving .499/.414/.850

Players close to or over .60/---/.80.
Thomas Bryant .661/823
Zubac .607/.896
Sabonis .616/.753
Ayton .594/.768
Valanciunas .575/.819
Boban .605/.772
Jon Leuer .606/.759

I don't know what is required to qualify but Mchale may have some company this year. Zubac is at 150 FGA/88 FTA and Bryant is at 218 and 62. Bryant has also been getting a lot of playing time recently and I don't see any reason why that would change. 2nd round pick last year, looking like a steal atm. Last 17 games: 13.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.8 blocks in 24.3 mpg on .701/.692/.833 shooting. He's 9/13 from 3 during that time. He should get more than enough time the rest of the year to qualify but unlike the other guys on the list, he shoots the 3 so that could cause his FG% to plummet if he started attempting more.

Dude is 6'11 with a 7'6 wingspan and 9'4.5 standing reach, both in the 99th% percentile of measurements at combines. Not very athletic though. Still can't complain given he was the 42nd pick and he won't be 22 until July. Kinda funny since the discussion around here was Bell vs Ojeleye but it looks like Bryant and Morris were the 2nd round steals and they were both drafted after Bell and Ojeleye. When all is said and done, that draft is going to end up looking somewhat like 2013 where a lot of the talent went in the mid to late 1st round. It just has a slightly better top 10 and no Giannis. In a redraft, guys like John Collins, Jarrett Allen and Donovan Mitchell would move way up the charts. Kuzma too.

Speaking of John Collins, he is currently averaging 19.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists in 30 minutes per on .593/.387/.719 shooting. No one has ever had a 60% FG%/40% 3 point % year either. I doubt he will be the first but that's ridiculous. It's on 2.3 3PA per game but still. Bryant is at .663/.375 himself, but only 33 total attempts from 3 (0.8 attempts per). Collins has 75 attempts.

Steven Adams left the OKC-MIL game a moment ago with what appeared to be a sprained ankle. He stayed in the game for a possession after the injury occurred, so hopefully nothing too serious.

Mavs are really hard to beat in Dallas. Up 99-93 against Toronto with a little under 10 minutes to go. Doncic has 28, 12 and 8 on 11-18 shooting. 1-7 from 3.

18-6 at home, 4-20 on the road. Biggest split in the league.

With the Thunder’s ridiculous retirement of Nick Collison’s number coming up, I unearthed this article about the worst non-dead NBA players to receive that honor.

https://www.brightsideofthesun.com/2013/9/19/4745692/worst-nba-players-to-have-their-jersey-retired

Tl;dr version — Collison is in the discussion but is probably not the worst player to have his number retired by an NBA team, even excluding guys like Malik Sealy and Bobby Phills whose numbers were only retired because of their untimely deaths.

Luka wound up with a career high in points with 35 (14-24), 12 boards and 10 dimes but the Raptors beat the Mavs 123-120 as Kawhi scored 33 points and had 10 boards.

Bender's actually been starting recently because Ayton is out. 4 games, 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steal in 30 minutes per. Shooting 63.6% from the field. He just turned 21 in November.

They lost all 4 games. Just thought it was interesting since he went from basically not playing to playing 30 per. And he actually did something with his time, at least for him. If he continues to put up numbers while Ayton is out, maybe he will get a 2nd NBA contract.

I would totally take a flier on Bender because I don’t believe Phoenix is a great place for a young player to develop. I think with the right situation a coach can unlock an NBA player from a guy with his size and skillset.

You do realize that we aren’t in rebuilding mode right? If Bender gets a shot elsewhere it will be on a lottery team who can essentially try him out with some bench minutes without having to worry about the results of the game.

Well I’m not a GM of an NBA team so when I said “I’d take a flier on Bender” it was indicating that if I was in a hypothetical scenario where I was the GM of an NBA team, I would take a flier on Bender.

Ah gotcha. This makes more sense. I’m sure he’ll get another shot even if this is all he does just from a GM wanting to see him in a non-Phoenix environment with all other GM’s monitoring that new situation.

Golden State just toyed with Indiana. Cousins dropped 22 in 25 minutes. Unstoppable when the Fab Five is on the floor.
No Oladipo for Indy (sigh), but still: the Celtics should feel really good about themselves watching that beatdown. Cousins was so good tonight it was almost shocking to watch. There was a 3-4 minute stretch at the start of the 4th quarter — the stretch where Klay and the offensive scrubs usually cough up the lead — where all they did was dump it into him into the block and he got deep position so easily it was either an easy layup, free throws, or an easy pass to cutter for a layup every time.

Draymond was out, Klay and KD were bad (though after playing 100 games between them with zero nights off, I forgive them), end of a long road trip ... and they still beat down a quality team by 32.

Peaking too early, maybe?...

Ok, with Looney it’s Fab 4.5.
Or just call it 5 with former All-Star / Team USA / Finals MVP Iguodala in Draymond's place. He turned 35 tonight, but (knocking wood) is looking as good as I've seen him as a Warrior. Best plus-minus of any bench player in the NBA, best assist-to-turnover ratio of any non-little player in the NBA, statistically the best defender of James Harden in the NBA.

Tonight: 27 minutes, 6 pts on zero misses (2-2 fg, 2-2 ft), 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 1 turnover, +20.

I watched the Cs-Dubs game without a game thread, and came on here expecting to find the mood pretty upbeat, in that we had played ok against a firing-on-all-cylinders GSW team, and clearly still had a lot of room for improvement. I was...wrong.

Back on topic: Warriors look terrifying right now.

Ugh, I missed the beginning of the Ws game where this happened — Myles Turner hard foul on Boogie in full flight, causing him to land awkwardly with his full weight on his left leg (the one with the repaired Achilles) and crumple to ground grimacing...

Props to his surgeon (and the hoops gods) I suppose. Makes his 4th quarter dominance even more impressive.
