ACC got overseesed (and I'm an ACC basketball fanboy) Clemson and Syracuse in the same group of 8 too which is really rare

Remember that when a team gets knocked out due to Covid they are replaced with a team from their own conference. So L’ville and St L won’t necessarily be the first two replacement teams......very unlikely for St L.
Kansas and UVA getting their first game on Saturday could be a big help in getting past COVID issues
Winthrop should be favored against Villanova. There were each of top of my respective “upset” and “fade” lists......and end up matched up lol.
I think that is for the one bid conferences. If a team like Oregon State has to withdraw, Louisville is the first choice as a replacement.
If a one-bid league team can’t make it, another team from their league does according to CBS.
Not from what I understand but this is new to everyone so maybe there are bad reports out there.
Illinois has to get past the 'Case first (of course, SU needs to get past SDSU first!). Actually - and as an alum, I've not been high on SU hoops in recent years - I think Syracuse could be a problem for teams this time around. They're playing really well at this point, and it wouldn't shock me if they knock off SDSU and give Illinois all they can handle and then some.
EDIT: Oh well SU would need to get by SDSU, then WVU, then Houston. LOL. Ok disregard.

Illinois will have their hands full with Loyola to get to the Sweet Sixteen. That has the potential to be the 2nd round game of the tournament.
Former Celtics assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry reportedly the new Penn State head coach, according to The Athletic. Indiana native, former assistant to Brad Stevens at Butler, most recently Associate Head Coach at Purdue. Penn State’s prior head coach, Pat Chambers, resigned after using the phrase “get the noose off your neck” to a Black player, Rasul Butler, who transferred to Iowa State not long after. Jim Ferry did a creditable job as interim coach but Penn State really needed to hire a Black coach. Shrewsberry is 44 years old.
Immediately upon seeing that Colgate's game vs Arkansas was scheduled for Friday afternoon, I scheduled a two-hour "meeting" so none of my Zoom-happy colleagues will try to book something with me. 'Gate gave Grant Hill and Tennessee a bit of a scare in this game last time, and I could see this one being interesting if the shots fall. It's an intriguing matchup for a 3-v-14; similar styles with lots of pace and 3-point shooting, and both teams are on long winning streaks. For a small-school program, the Raiders are pretty athletic and have a well-balanced scoring profile (often 5-6 players in double figures). And Matt Langel, who has the Penn/ Fran Dunphy pedigree, is a great coach who may not be in the Patriot League much longer.
I was waiting for the Colgate draw as their contrasting style could have posed some real problems for a certain type of team. Sadly, I hate this matchup for them as the Razorbacks play a similar style but do everything at a much higher level.
I still find it crazy that they play nearly all of their games this year against the same 3-4 teams.

One of Chambers' strengths was his knowledge of and ability to recruit deep into the Philly area. I wonder how strong a recruiting presence Shrewsberry can project? I think his resume will impress many youngsters - across a much broader geographical area.
Yeah, you can only do so much when you're playing Holy Cross 10 times. I'd like to think that if they'd had a more complete schedule they could've eked their way to a 13 - or at least had the opportunity to see how they measure up against higher-level opponents.
Chris Beard, Scott Drew will be the white whales; or do they have the balls to hire Pitino?
I think Pitino is the play. IU has been a graveyard for coaches since Knight, so I don't know why Beard or Drew would leave the great situations that they have. Pitino, on the other hand, would walk through fire to get to Bloomington, and all the alums care about is winning again.
Agreed overall, but those alums can easily checkbook two schools in Texas if they really want one of those two.
Maybe they lose Philly but recruit better across the Midwest? And maybe Penn State is a stepping stone job for Shrewsberry. Or it could be his coaching graveyard. Like Chambers and several others before him.
I still say Penn State was on the right trajectory with Bruce Parkhill when he, to me, unexpectedly resigned at the age of 49, citing burnout, never to coach again except for an equally unexpected 2 year stint as a Asst Coach at Ohio State 2000-2002.
Hearing a lot of Boston College chatter around the internet about Pitino. Their new AD is going to be looking to make a splash with his men’s basketball coaching hire. Kraft as a history in making veteran hires with Fran Dunphy at Temple who I believe was 68 when he was hired.
Edit: Oooops just read the BC thread. Earl Grant hmmm, interesting and not sure in a good way with the interesting fit. He turned Charleston around with primarily his Atlanta ties and recently recruited bigs from Senegal and Nigeria.

Of course, some or maybe even all could wind up returning, but it is a resounding blow.

Even after Duke, St. Johns, Louisville, Seton Hall and Xavier opted out. That means Penn State wasn't even within the next 5 teams to be considered. Ouch.

They finished 11th in the conference are are entirely irrelevant. Rearranging deck chairs makes no difference - might as well get guys you want and buy in to your philosophy. They’ll always suck.
It feels like this has been the go-to description of Penn State since the days of Dick Harter ... (I still smile at the memory of Harter recruiting my boyhood friend Craig Collins and announcing that he was the recruit who would turn PSU basketball around.)
Wish I knew the answer here. Penn State has no business being a perennial doormat in the Big 10.

Pretty damning article in the Globe on UMASS hoops - by guess who, Bob Hohler - how half the team was from from Mitchell's HS team etc., Mitchell's "advisor" Tony Bergeron became a UMASS assistant and one of the highest paid assistants in the country etc.

This is a nothing story. Mike Boynton hired Cade Cunningham's brother as an assistant and guess where he went? Back in the day, Bill Self hired Mario Chalmers' father as an assistant and guess where he went? It's been going on for years.
It's less the legality of it and more the program is now in shambles/disarray and they have to pay his 'advisor' out. Not good for the AD and coach.
