Damn it JA, every time you update this thread I think Cashman has closed a deal for a 1B or SP.

If Cashman keeps up this slow, methodical pace, I'm going to abandon my usual reserved, cautious perspective and go full crow.

:(

Come to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to NYYF.

Okay, that is funny.

I'm back off the ledge. I can only imagine what is being posted on NYYF right now.

That said, now that I see the extension that Olson was willing to sign, I'm a little more wistful about what could have been.

Of course he may not have been willing to do that with NY. And the cost in prospects would have been steep. But still.

Sorry to EE for bumping this with no news but Keith Law wrote something in his trade recap that I thought might make @crow216 feel better, about the Donaldson acquisition:

"He steps right in as the Yankees’ third baseman and immediately makes them three wins better."

NO NEWS YET, EE. :)

Worth noting FWIW (probably not much) that Donaldson and Freeman played together in 2019.

What has me mildly hopeful about Freeman to NY still is that if NY thought they didn’t have a chance, they would have moved on to Rizzo already.

Beyond that, if NY didn't have a chance on Freeman, LAD would have signed him by now.

Sure, Toronto and Boston could be there too but if the guiding factor was hometown discount, this would be done.

Puzzled why the Sox didn’t seem interested in Rizzo; would have been a good bridge to Casas. Doesn’t seem like that are all that enamored with Dalbec. Argh.

I don't think he really gave anyone else a shot, he spent a lot of time in NJ growing up and really wanted to come back if possible. The Cubs I think offered a lot more than this for him to come back, but he waited out NY's pursuits of Olson and Freeman because that was how badly he wanted to be back.

Cashman should go hard after Sean Murphy and Manaea or Montas now.

Wonder if there's been a handshake on Freeman to the Dodgers and maybe its waiting something on the administrative side. Odd he is still lingering and would have never though Rizzo went first.

OK then.

Do they move Voit since DJ is the utility guy and will presumably get a lot of ABs at 1B/2B/3B/DH, and seems like a particularly ill-tempered part time player?

And not that I blame him, of course. But they still could use a #2 or #3 pitcher, and maybe Voit with some prospects could get a good one.

Why would the Sox go after Rizzo? Casas will likely be up end of this year and if not he will likely be the starting 1B for 2023. Bloom wants to use that spot for minimum spend while he throws money at other shortcomings in the system. At least I think.

but good signing for NY. Their defense is strong at 1b and SS. You really think DJL is on the bench?

Rizzo deal is indeed 2/32 with a player optout after this year, that puts NY around $252M for the moment.

Whether there is a handshake or not, I think Cashman had to know from the negotiations that the Yankees were out.

I'm glad to have Rizzo as long as we have vaccine resolution. He's got the defense and he has some hitting upside. That's also a tiny contract in relative terms.

I still think there's a chance Torres gets traded in a package for a starter. At this point, though, I'm happy to roll the dice on Torres one more time and use the loaded system to pick up extra pieces. Not sure there's anymore FA that can help.

Also at some point is the contract difference between the two worth it? Curry said earlier tonight that Freeman turned down 5/140 from ATL, 2/32 looks nice compared to that even if FG projects Freeman as a 4.7 WAR player and Rizzo as a 2.6 one.

There's a chance but actually now they kind of need Gleyber's potential upside in the lineup.

I agree. I'm good with it. I would feel even better about it if Rizzo was vaxxed. Maybe he will be. A reasonable two year contract is better than I hoped for him. Figured it would be three.

I agree completely.

Can't put a sharp pencil on it right this second but the Yankees are going to enter next year's free agency period with a ton of money to spend and not a whole lot to spend it on. I wonder if we take on more salary dumps with a 1-2 yr salary hit.

I agree with keeping Gleyber too. We know what he is capable of. Maybe if he isn't dicking around at SS we'll see more of it. He did look a little better after going back to 2B.

Why sit DJL? Sit Torres.
Nah. DJ is a professional hitter and I think you can move him around and plug him into the lineup whenever. He'll get plenty of ABs. I thing Gleyber needs to play regularly to figure things out. If he doesn't, they can move him before the deadline.

Yeah, if either DJ or Gleyber was any good last year, they'd have the starting 2B spot now, but as it is, it likely reverts to when DJ signed here originally, to backup 2B/3B/1B.

I'll say this much, if the Sox land Freeman, WFAN is gonna be must listen. Fans are going to want to chop Hal's head off. They'll be wrong of course, but it seems like there's lots of "reasons" why none of the best possible players are coming to the Yankees this offseason.

However you want to slice it, the Yankees wind up with the 3rd or 4th best 1B available, a SS most fans in NY ever heard of, and an old 3B nobody had on their radar. This has been a very good offseason so far for the Yankees but I do think we've got some introspection to do about why we have a $250m payroll and half the lineup is a question mark, we still need a starter, and our best player isn't even extended.
