Just said this to my friend too, Medvedev had that one and let it slip away. Amazing by Rafa!!!All-time classic. Incredible champion. Daniil is not going to sleep well for a while. Up two sets, up 3-2, Rafa serving, 0-40, three break points for Daniil and he didn’t take any. And now he’s lost.
Saw that tooHeh I didn't see this, but my friend texted me "ha when the woman conducting the ceremony said medvedev would break tennis records he’s shaking his head and mouthing ‘no i won’t’".
Turnabout is fair play; FAA had Med similarly on the ropes in the quarters.Just said this to my friend too, Medvedev had that one and let it slip away. Amazing by Rafa!!!
It could have been three straight, Daniil would be 200 points away from #1 which means he would be #1 in a couple of months when Novak’s points roll off. He would have beaten both Novak and Rafa in three straight in two straight slam finals. It would have a hell of a story for him. Incredible fight back by Rafa.Just said this to my friend too, Medvedev had that one and let it slip away. Amazing by Rafa!!!
Its tough to see what happened to Juan Martin's career with injury after injury. That forehand he had was one of the best weapons on tour in any era.I don't know if I feel strongly one way or another about Jason Gay's writing, but I did enjoy this article on del Potro in the WSJ. It captures what I know is a rather common feeling that I have had over the years that del Potro was a wonderful tennis player done wrong by the injury gods.

In the last 10 years or so, do we know how many weeks someone outside of Big 3 has been ranked #1?Djokovic is about to lose his #1 ranking to Medvedev. Which is nice.
Andy Murray for 41 weeks total. In the last 10 years or so, do we know how many weeks someone outside of Big 3 has been ranked #1?
Yup. Between November 2016 and August 2017.Andy Murray for 41 weeks total.
I rarely get into non slam matches as much as I was into that one. Super fun tennis.Nadal vs. Alcaraz is nuts. Both guys are hitting amazing shots right now.
Totally agree. She's also been at it a dozen years or so...which isn't that much shorter than peers like Wozniacki, Ivanovic, Radwanska...Surprising as it is midseason, but not really that surprising. It's not historically unusual for even top tier women's champions to call it a career in their mid 20s. Barty has had an interesting run, walking away from the sport back when she was 17/18 to pursue a career in cricket, before returning to the tour 2 years later.
Incredible week by Alcaraz following up on his BNPParibas. Only two teens have ever made the Semi-Finals of BNP & Miami. Nadal, Joker, Murray, Agassi……and Alcaraz at 18.If you’re a tennis fan and you’re not watching the Miami Open, you are sleeping on some incredible tennis, particularly from Carlos Alcaraz. My goodness.
Winning Indian Wells and Miami back to back is arguably more difficult to do than winning an individual grand slam...incredible run for her.And on the women's side, Iga Swiatek has been an absolute beast lately. She just bageled Osaka in the second set to win Miami.
I dont really follow F1 but I'm pretty sure this is their approach as well (in addition to not hosting any events in Russia/Belarus). And IMO the correct approach. I didn't see it mentioned in the article but I wonder how this will affect ranking points? Will Medvedev lose all the 4th round points he has to defend from last years tournament?Appears to be the case which is absolutely ridiculous. Punishing individual athletes (who have limited career shelf lives as it is) for the actions of a government they don't control in any way is garbage.
What was the problem with simply not noting their country in any manner as the French Open is planning?
I know some Ukrainian players like Svitolina have called for this, and maybe I'm being hyperbolic/seen one too many movies, but would this not potentially be a personally dangerous move for prominent Russian athletes?I would have no problem letting them play of they publicly denounce the war in Ukraine.
And/or their families. No I don't think this is a good idea at all. They should be allowed to play freely with no restrictions other than those to limit their nations from being recognized.I know some Ukrainian players like Svitolina have called for this, and maybe I'm being hyperbolic/seen one too many movies, but would this not potentially be a personally dangerous move for prominent Russian athletes?
Terrific (and depressing) additional point about their families. In complete agreement with you.And/or their families. No I don't think this is a good idea at all. They should be allowed to play freely with no restrictions other than those to limit their nations from being recognized.
Would be very disappointing if I have to personally boycott Wimbledon, but that is a very easy call if they do this.Wimbledon could be especially interesting this year with news that they are "planning" on banning Russian and Belarusian players from the tournament. Big time names like Medvedev, Rublev, Khachanov, Pavlyuchenkova, Sabalenka, and Azarenka would be out if they follow through with it.
