All-time classic. Incredible champion. Daniil is not going to sleep well for a while. Up two sets, up 3-2, Rafa serving, 0-40, three break points for Daniil and he didn’t take any. And now he’s lost.

Turnabout is fair play; FAA had Med similarly on the ropes in the quarters.

I watched the beginning and the end of the match and slept for a couple hours in the middle. Nadal looked awful in the 1st, then managed to go up a break in the 2nd, but when Med broke back I figured it was over. When he won the tiebreak I dozed off, fully expecting to wake up to highlights of a straight-sets Med win. Woke up late in the 4th and watched the rest.

It could have been three straight, Daniil would be 200 points away from #1 which means he would be #1 in a couple of months when Novak’s points roll off. He would have beaten both Novak and Rafa in three straight in two straight slam finals. It would have a hell of a story for him. Incredible fight back by Rafa.

It's tough to see wha
I don't know if I feel strongly one way or another about Jason Gay's writing, but I did enjoy this article on del Potro in the WSJ. It captures what I know is a rather common feeling that I have had over the years that del Potro was a wonderful tennis player done wrong by the injury gods.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/juan-martin-del-potro-tennis-11644407714?mod=Searchresults_pos1&page=1
Its tough to see what happened to Juan Martin's career with injury after injury. That forehand he had was one of the best weapons on tour in any era.

In a parallel world he won 5-6 majors.

To add onto this, here are a series of tweets regarding the ATP's "investigation" into the abuse claims that came out in November of 2020*
View: https://twitter.com/BenRothenberg/status/1491471925440393219?s=20&t=xK5VGowTsa_sIAmUb78DRg

It's a thread so ill just copy and paste the text of all them, from @benrothenberg
(The 1st tweet was from Feb 9th) Olga Sharypova told me today that she *still* has not been contacted for the ATP's "internal investigation" into her accusations. The ATP had announced that an investigation into the accusations was "currently underway" back on October 4th, more than four months ago. (Then from today) Since folks have asked about this once more today: The ATP has still not provided any updates on the Zverev investigation it said was already “currently underway” in October; I most recently asked for an update last week and have gotten no reply. After months without updates, ATP just now re: its Zverev investigation: “The investigation is ongoing. We have contracted a third party with expertise in this area to assist in our investigative process. Further information will be provided once the investigation is complete.”

Naomi Osaka returned to play at Indians Wells this week.

In her round 2 match someone yelled "Naomi you Suck" after she lost the first game) (may have been once, that is what ESPN report has) (saw a different report that said more than once)

Naomi asked the judge to eject the person. Judge apparently said she couldn't identify. Naomi asked for the Mic, judge rightly said that was against rules.
Ultimately got blown off the court, and said afterwards she was watching videos of Venus and Serena being heckled there after the really ugly 2001 incident

Nice win for Opelka yesterday vs Shapavalov, for the right to play Nadal next...and an even nicer win for Jenson Brooksby over Tsitsipas. After getting drubbed in the first set he really flustered Tsits in the next two and ended up winning pretty handily 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. This will get him into the top 40. Another 8-10 spots gets him seeded at slams and 1000 level events,

Surprising as it is midseason, but not really that surprising. It's not historically unusual for even top tier women's champions to call it a career in their mid 20s. Barty has had an interesting run, walking away from the sport back when she was 17/18 to pursue a career in cricket, before returning to the tour 2 years later.

Totally agree. She's also been at it a dozen years or so...which isn't that much shorter than peers like Wozniacki, Ivanovic, Radwanska...

If you’re a tennis fan and you’re not watching the Miami Open, you are sleeping on some incredible tennis, particularly from Carlos Alcaraz. My goodness.

Incredible week by Alcaraz following up on his BNPParibas. Only two teens have ever made the Semi-Finals of BNP & Miami. Nadal, Joker, Murray, Agassi……and Alcaraz at 18.

Predictable melt down from Medvedev who continues to wilt in the heat and humidity. Horrible draw for him playing at 1pm under the Miami sun too.

Honestly watching Alcaraz the last couple matches borderline ruins the matches that follow. They seem so relatively boring.
Since I stopped traveling on tour about a decade ago there have been must watch situations (fed in a slam final, for example), but zero must watch players. I think Alcaraz has changed that.

And on the women's side, Iga Swiatek has been an absolute beast lately. She just bageled Osaka in the second set to win Miami.

Alcaraz was down a break 1-4 and then won 6 of next 7 games to take the set 7-5.

edit: and Alcaraz opens up the 2nd set with a break. Rudd will need to step up his game to work his way back into this, tough to see Alcaraz faltering now. Although if Rudd keeps it tight pressure will mount come winning time...

Alcaraz finishes off Ruud in straight sets to win Miami. Announcers are right about him. He's not the future; he's the present.

Wimbledon could be especially interesting this year with news that they are "planning" on banning Russian and Belarusian players from the tournament. Big time names like Medvedev, Rublev, Khachanov, Pavlyuchenkova, Sabalenka, and Azarenka would be out if they follow through with it.

Edit: Added a link to the story.

Appears to be the case which is absolutely ridiculous. Punishing individual athletes (who have limited career shelf lives as it is) for the actions of a government they don't control in any way is garbage.

What was the problem with simply not noting their country in any manner as the French Open is planning?

I dont really follow F1 but I'm pretty sure this is their approach as well (in addition to not hosting any events in Russia/Belarus). And IMO the correct approach. I didn't see it mentioned in the article but I wonder how this will affect ranking points? Will Medvedev lose all the 4th round points he has to defend from last years tournament?
Sidenote - the ranking system is mind bottingly stupid but that's a different conversation.

I know some Ukrainian players like Svitolina have called for this, and maybe I'm being hyperbolic/seen one too many movies, but would this not potentially be a personally dangerous move for prominent Russian athletes?
And/or their families. No I don't think this is a good idea at all. They should be allowed to play freely with no restrictions other than those to limit their nations from being recognized.

Terrific (and depressing) additional point about their families. In complete agreement with you.

Would be very disappointing if I have to personally boycott Wimbledon, but that is a very easy call if they do this.

I am certainly not a supporter of Putin, or the unjust invasion of Ukraine, but that has nothing to do with these athletes, and quite honestly will not put pressure on Putin's regime, but far more likely will have the opposite effect on the ground in Russia.

Big showdown in Madrid QF between Nadal and Carlos Alcarez who is already in the top 10 at age 19. He’s my sleeper pick to win the French Open.
