Top-10 OT's tend to be stalwarts from Day One. And finding capable interior linemen as rookies is also possible. Maybe the other interior OL is a vet.
Depending in their final draft spot, Bower might be their best choice. In which case, they would need to find another free agent O-lineman.
Here are the top 10 OT’s in the last decade:
Paris Johnson, Evan Neal, Charles Cross, Penei Sewell, Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills, Mike McGlinchy, Ronnie Stanley, Jack Conklin, Brandon Scherff (converted to guard), Ereck Flowers, Greg Robinson, Jake Matthews, Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel, Lane Johnson
That’s a mix of complete duds, a few studs (interestingly the arguable best guys in that list are right tackles), and solid unspectacular options probably not worth a top 10 pick but competent and reliable players
the assertion that a top 10 tackle “tends to be a stalwart from day 1” isn’t really accurate. Of that group of 16, there is a cumulative 2 all pro appearances at LT (Stanley in his 4th season, Thomas in his 3rd). Less than 50% of those guys were high end players as rookies
Highly drafted tackles do tend to be day 1 starters, but that’s usually the case for top 10 picks at most positions. So I’m sure Fashanu, Mims, Latham, Alt, Fuaga and even Suamataia, Guyton and Fautanu (if he stays at tackle) being day 1 starters but I’d be surprised if more than 2 of them were impact or reliable starting players.
I think Fashanu is a better prospect than most of those guys but hardly a can’t miss prospect. Evan Neal was talked about as a pro ready, versatile, high floor prospect and he’s been awful. Fisher and Joeckel went 1/2 overall and neither was an impact player.
As for finding interior guys later, sure it can happen. But of the 2023 mid/late round interior linemen (round 3-7), here are the guys who have started more than half their teams games to date: Sidy Sow, Chandler Zavala, Anthony Bradford. None of those guys have been day 1 starters. There were 15 guard, center or position versatile (T/G) guys taken outside of the first 2 rounds by my count, so that’s not exactly a great hit rate for “possible part time starter as a rookie” let alone the type of guy who would noticeably upgrade the Jets OL next year.
All of this is really just a long winded way of saying it’s unlikely the Jets can revamp their OL through the draft in a meaningful way. Fashanu is a terrific prospect, and there’s a couple of guys I really like as plug and play types but whose strength is run blocking (doesn’t help the keep Rodgers upright plan). They’re going to need veteran options (internal or free agents) to stabilize their line and hope whatever tackle they draft can be above average in pass pro from day 1 (and again Fashanu is the only guy who seems likely to do that)
