What’s with all the Eovaldi love? He was terrible in September. He had a fantastic opening round start, and I love the guy, but I could totally see the Orioles lighting him up like the fourth of July.

We’re one Rangers win away from the Red Sox clinching as many postseason wins as the Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays and Orioles COMBINED. What a potentially great 2023. And the power of maths.

Texas blew a 2-0 ALDS lead back in 2015. Pitching showing some warts at the end of this one. Game 3 will be fun

The AL East going winless in the 2023 playoffs would certainly be something.

Every other manager: We survived 3 innings with our starter, let's burn through our bullpen.

Baldelli: We have a comfortable lead, let's see if Lopez can throw more pitches than he has all year.

Correa's contract looked bad all season and may be an abject disaster long term, but damn if he isn't lighting up the playoffs here.

My hope for this post-season was that MN not be humiliated. I believe that's been accomplished. What a pitching performance! No matter what the outcome of this post-season, Lopez's and Kershaw's very different starts will be stand-out memories. As for Lopez's interview, I didn't hear it all, but I think the sports guys are just very impressed by his intelligence and his choosing baseball over medical school. They probably had trouble, like me, passing chemistry.

I’ve read a lot of articles about how awful the playoffs format is and that allows a bunch of bad teams to end up beating good teams….
I don’t get it. I’m all for the expanded wildcards

Isn’t the basic argument that the longer the series, the greater the chance of the better team winning? And MLB starts with best of 3 and then best of 5.

I'm guessing that's the issue... but the "better" team still gets home field advantage and likely will align their better starting matchups to their advantage too. I just don't get the complaint... so what if the "better" team throughout the season gets beat by a team that barely snuck in. It's not like any of the teams that "snuck" in were terrible. This still isn't the NBA playoffs

635 comments on The Athletic... news flash: LDS has always been 70% to win for the favorite AT THE VERY BEST (if not 65%). This is not NBA or the NFL. People are really going nuts here.

I don't buy that "bad teams" are winning this year, anyway. I know Arizona had a negative run differential, but they were a 100 win team with Moreno in the lineup, and most of their struggles (outside of their 4 game losing streak to end the season) happened while he was on the shelf. They play very good defense, their lineup is pretty deep (if a little young and inconsistent) and their starting pitching is a strength. They also have 2 or 3 really good bullpen pieces, which adds up to a solid playoff formula.

I agree that Miami was probably a "bad" postseason team, but they lost, so... YMMV.

It's also only been 1 or 2 games in each DS, so it's way to early to decide who has been eliminated (except the Orioles, but they are losing to a really, really good team).

I'm in favor of 8 teams in the playoffs, all best of 7 and the #1 seeds in each league to have 5 home games (2-2-3 format) in the first 2 rounds. All to make regular season valuable.

Don't like byes for rust reasons.

8 teams per league or across all MLB? As in just one WC from each league?

That only makes the regular season valuable if you also eliminate divisional spots.
