And I’m on team play the ball down. It rarely happens and these guys are good enough that it doesn’t really impact them. Am’s just do what we all do and roll it over.

Lift clean and replace in fairway only is how it should be for divots. They're not part of the course, they're effectively ground under repair IMO.

I'm also in the belief that a lot of the rules of golf are archaic and dumb and the people that clutch their pearls over them generally lack a good justification other than "tradition".

Give players two free "lift, clean and drop" options per 18 holes. If there is a bad divot or other temporary hazard they want to avoid, they can drop up to 1 club length further away, straight line, away from the hole.

And then we can criticize them for keeping them in their pocket instead of using them during the round
I wouldnt mind this, although no clean and not a club length. Fairway only, Lift and place to closest spot outside the divot within 6 inches.
A club length is way too far, it potentially allows you move to a better stance in areas that aren't flat.

Aren’t scoring errors usually missing a penalty or a swing is considered a whiff and the ball moved a hair? Was this one of those or was it just writing down the wrong number or bad math?
I think I read that he wrote down a wrong number. No "penalty he should have taken but didn't" type thing.

Maybe they could just change the rule so that you get assessed a stroke or two penalty for signing a wrong scorecard. It might be enough to lose a tournament (and likely will cost some money) but it won't DQ you.

Mark Dusbabec explained what happened on air today. Jordan could have stayed in the scoring tent and waited for scorecard validation, which would have told him he had the wrong score on his scorecard. Instead, he just dropped off his scorecard and left the scoring area. Once you leave, you can't make corrections to your signed card. Scorecard validation is very fast process (1 person reads scores 3 holes at a time while another types them into an app on computer. Once all 18 scores are in, it will compare it to what Shotlink has. If there is any discrepancy it won't let the scorecard be marked as official). You do need to wait for any other players who may still be in there, but unless things are going very wrong, it's a pretty short process.

Also, even on courses where there is full Shotlink, there are many places on the course that are not visible. Plenty can and does happen away from all camera views.

DQ as the penalty is dumb though. I get that it's supposed to be a deterrent to cheating, but a 2-stroke penalty seems harsh enough for the offense to me.

I’m fine with a smaller radius. But I want “drop” instead of “place” so they can’t exactly pick the spot and improve the lie. You get what gravity gives ya.

This is a very odd take. So, you want free relief from an unlucky break, but you want to make sure they can get another unlucky break? What if the drop ends up in another divot?

Xander noted that Jordan left quickly because he was not feeling well and needed to rush to the bathroom. Not sure it’s relevant overall but these type of rules are simply arbitrary for the sake of tradition. I at least understand some of the others even if I don’t agree with them.

I'm a "lift, clean and place" guy but since the rules have changed from waist high to knee high drop height I wouldn't strenuously object to that option.

Jordan could have not signed it and come back for scorecard validation. This is really the last thing that anyone wanted to happen, and the TOUR does just about everything possible to protect the players. The rule about leaving the scoring tent is there to protect everyone else playing. What if Jordan just left and they couldn't get in touch with him for 3 hours. Should the cut be delayed until he can get back to the course to validate his scorecard? What if it's 12 hours? The DQ rule is fairly arbitrary to me, though I'm sure the USGA has their reasons. The rule about not leaving the scoring tent until your scorecard is marked official is not.

But why? If you hit into the fairway then you should be entitled to a perfect lie, so just let them place it. I don't understand wanting a little "rub of the green" but not so much that it could be in a "divot".

Cantlay and Schauffele a hole and a half behind already.

Edit: Dusbabek provides cover saying the List group is 4 minutes ahead of time par, ignoring Cantlay standing over putts shuffling his feet for 60 seconds

Cantlay gave Joey LaCava a look after he hit in the cross bunker. This relationship might not last too long.

Does anyone know where to track scores for the US Open Pre- Qualifier?

I have a pocket change bet with my brother re: Charlie Woods. He has <73.5 inside top 44.5, so I took the overs.

US Open qualifying doesn't start until late April, but the USGA posts scores online at USGA.org

Edit: Oh you're talking about the Charlie Woods thing. That's a pre-qualifier for a Tour event, the Cognizent Classic (formerly the Honda). No idea if there's live scoring somewhere but I the Tour has been posting about it so they'll probably share his results.

Yah, my bad. My google Auto Complete filled out the rest of pre-qualifier with US Open and I took it at face value. Obviously not hugely invested in this!

There's a Match today...Rory, Max, Lexi and Rose Zhang. 12-hole charity skins game under the lights on TNT at 6:30pm.

Also sounds like Anthony Kim will be in the LIV field this week in Saudi Arabia.

Besides Rory the quality of golf was pretty mediocre in The Match, but I found it entertaining. Barkley played the fool as usual, but I thought he was funny and also asked some surprisingly good questions from an amateur perspective. Somebody asked Lexi Thompson if she had played under the lights before. She said no, and Chucks response was "You should do it more often, I play lit all the time".
Homa was great to listen too. I think the banter distracted his game but who cares. The downside was the female commentator (no idea who she was) was trying way too hard to talk trash and it didn't work. And the guy with DJ Khalid was a train wreck. At one point Ernie Johnson indirectly asked to shut off the guy's mike.

Anyway, on to real golf. Players is only 2 weeks away, and then nothing says "spring is here" like The Masters.

Christina Kim. She does some featured group stuff for ESPN+. She is awful. The other guy with DJ Khalid was Paul Bissonette, former NHL goon and current analyst for TNT hockey. I get the impression that they are trying to make him the hockey Barkley. I'm a hockey guy and I think he sucks too.

Meanwhile, Talor Gooch has declared an asterix on the upcoming Masters Champion because he's not invited:

I hope if I win my club championship I get an invitation too. How will we ever know if Rory can beat me?

Data Golf had a pretty funny response, they added Gooch certificates to majors.

Been a wild journey for Gooch. Was kind of a nice up and coming player on Tour. Then he apparently just wanted to play the first LIV event in London 3 years ago but somehow wasn't aware he was going to be suspended from the Tour. Then he sort of went full on batshit. Compared his team winning a LIV event to being greater than a Ryder Cup victory. Now this.

The funny thing is among the top 50 in the Data Golf rankings (strictly strokes gained not tournament results...includes LIV performances) Gooch is the only LIV player in the top 50 that isn't currenty in the Masters. There's like 3 or 4 PGA Tour players who are in the top 50 but not in.

Webb Simpson, board member, talking about LIV guys coming back says there's about 6 guys they might make exceptions for, the rest to Q school or the DP world tour.

Who are the 6?

Jon Rahm
Brooks Koepka
Dustin Johnson
Bryson DeChambeau?
Joaco Niemenn?
Tyrell Hatton? Would Phil still be desireable?
Given that Phil was the first to go, I wouldn't be surprised if he's on the naughty list

Agreed. If they are letting LIV players come back, whether invited, earned via qualifying or otherwise, the lifetime exempt guys should be part of that.

I'm not sure how negotiations are going here, but IMHO, if LIV guys are allowed back, don't be arbitrarily picking winners and losers. If a player otherwise would be in (won within last 2 years, won major, lifetime etc), they should be in. If not, make em earn it back. If things work out so that LIV players receive some sort of equally applied punishment, then that's OK -- the player can decide if it's worth it to rejoin. Assuming the PGA and LIV are negotiating this in a manner of cooperation, I can't see that any such punishments would be too severe as to basically make it impossible or unfeasible for LIV players to return.

To be clear, I don't like LIV at all, or the current state of pro golf. But the PGA tour continues to do things to make itself look less and less sympathetic to my eyes. Work this out, endure whatever negative press or response that will inevitably occur, and move on to make the product as good and compelling as possible - especially for fans.

The current path - a few big time events that results in a lot of the "lesser" tournaments lacking star power, a weakened Euro tour, and LIV on the CW might even make a weekly watcher like me decide not to tune in as much.

Cam Smith is absolutely on the list. DJ for sure. Phil has the lifetime exemption but he probably nuked his chance to come back by spearheading this, and the lawsuit was “Mickelson et al vs PGA Tour”.

I’m not sure Bryson is on the list.

I completely forgot about Cam Smith. Ugh.

Agreed on Phil.
