It is taking (so far) almost two hours for my new phone to sign into google. that can't be right. I have tried WiFI as the over the air sign in and it just says "this could take a few minutes" What the hell is it doing? I can't get any of my apps on the phone via PLAY until i can sign in. Is it because i haven't swapped out my sim card? Or something? I'm confused.

edited: Ok it finally took, but it only downloaded four apps of all the apps. How do I get the rest of them on there? I Thought once i logged into the Play store, i would get the list of my apps and then just reinstall them all on this phone. But i just got Gmail, G+, google maps and something else googley. What am I doing wrong? i thought the whole idea behind this upgrade was it was gonna be easy!

edited again: Frat Fixed It! Thanks Fratty!

All I know is that AT&T sucked for me in NYC, and plenty of people who still have it here complain about it all the time. I don't care what their map shows or what they claim. I originally didn't get an iPhone because I refused to go back to AT&T. I still say Sprint is by far the best value and I've never had issues with the service.

From what I understand, the key issue isn't dropping it. It's putting it in a pocket that has a little sand or something and that scratches up the screen. I never put it in a pocket with keys or something else, but dirt/sand is another story.

TTP, a crack sounds like something that a screen protector wouldn't prevent. I'm more worried about getting little scratches over time to the point where it becomes annoying.
I've always made the strong recommendation that you don't need them. The screens can be scratches but it's also very hard to do. Take a chance because the screen just looks and feels so much better without it.

By your office, it's particularly bad. When I was at 42 Broadway, it was a nightmare. I couldn't get any data. Coincidentally, it's terrible near my new office as well but it's excellent everywhere else.

Regarding Sprint, I know plenty who switched and haven't experienced problems.

Some things I am really liking about the SG3--
no glare. I can read my phone in the outdoors or in the car without having to take off my sunglasses
battery life is awesome. I have had it going for over 8 hours and it is only at 76%. considering my old phone (SG1) i would have had to charge three times by now. Or just keep it plugged in.

but i can't figure out how to make a degree symbol. I am using the stock keyboard which suits me fine, i had swype on the other phone but this one works better, in fact i think it is even better, but lack of degree symbol gives me a sad. Does anyone know the secret trick? I mean there are two different heart symbols for Cod's sake.

My battery life was less impressive, hopefully just the first time charge or something.

Camera is great.

No degree symbol that I can find

Default Android multitouch keyboard: hit the ?123 button, it'll switch to number/symbol mode. The & will be near the f/g from querty mode. Hit the Alt button; the & turns into a degree symbol. Type it.

Swype: hit the Sym button to switch the keyboard to symbolic mode, it's shift-0 (hold down 0 for a second or two).

Forgive my stupidity but what is the alt key on this keyboard?
Assuming your phone doesn't install some wonky keyboard by default (and if so, hopefully you can choose the multitouch keyboard in keyboard/input settings)...

The "Shift" key turns into an "Alt" key when you're in numeric mode:

The Alt key toggles between numeric/basic symbols and wonkier symbols:

I think i have a different keyboard. I download Go Keyboard from Play store and that seems to give me a degree symbol but i am still baffled that Samsung would just get rid of that symbol, but give me an entire keyboard of ready made emoticons? Yeah yeah, i know i'm not the demographic they're looking for, but still.

Just got my Galaxy S III the other day...love it, except for the fact that i STILL dont get service in my apt that well! it rarely goes into 4g mode. The GF has a Verizon Iphone and gets perfect, enbelievable service, WTF is wrong here?

Also, the battery isn't all that great, with some usage here and there, a few calls, facebooking and internet, I am looking at about 10 hours or life...is that normal? I might buy another battery for it from Amazon, on sale for 26$ but am a little worried that it won't work really well. Does anyone know how to spot a "good" other-market battery vs. a dud?

10 hours is only ok. However, the fact that your phone is always having trouble in your apartment probably drains the battery quite a bit. Nothing crushes the battery like searching for a signal. So that might be a problem, which you could alleviate with a wifi connection.(if you have a router.) That won't help you for phone calls, of course.

Does the WiFi drain the battery as well if it is on when I am in the apartment? Imean, calls have NEVER been a problem, its just the internet connection
If it's connected to WiFi you'll save a ton of battery life over the course of the day. The phone will stop searching for a data signal, and run off the internet in your house.

One caveat, if you leave Wifi on when you're out and about and have no access point, the phone will search for a Wifi signal every 20 seconds or so, which can drain the battery a bit. I haven't noticed any real drain when I forget to toggle it, but it makes sense that it would have some impact on battery life.

The reviews are making noise about the brightness and the auto brightness levels. Do you notice anything annoying in that regard?

My battery life is disappointing as well, but it sounds like it is much better than any other 4G phone than the RAZR MAXX. I am thinking about buying a spare but will probably wait a month or two and see what comes out.

Brightness has not been an issue, they dialed it down to save some battery which there are a lot of articles about. However I had no problem with brightness even on the beach last week.

Also, Samsung is already talking about Jellybean, which makes me happy, even though they will TouchWiz it.

Amazon has the EVO 4G LTE on sale for $149.

I've yet to get one, as proclips still doesn't have the mount out for it.
You're still better off going to a Sprint store. If you turn in your old EVO the new one is $135. Plus if you're an idiot like me and need someone to transfer the data and insert the SD card going to the store is a necessity. They also threw in a free case and screen protector, if you need them.

If he gets it online for $149, couldn't he then still sell his old EVO on ebay or something? Or even keep it as insurance against a lost or broken phone? Seems better than saving $14.

You can just take the old one to the store and get $75 of credit on your account or buy a bunch of accessories. Basically, the value of the old phone EVO is not tied to buying a new one. It's got value on its own.

Finally got sick of waiting for an ICS upgrade for my Rezound. Flashed an ICS rom with Sense 4.0 (which the OTA isn't going to have anyway) and its GREAT. Anyone with a Rezound should look into Newt's One XxX rom.

After a week with the GS3, I have some impressions. Some are specific to VZW, some to the phone, some are just general ICS whatever.

I'll start with complaints.

- VZW turned off the easy access to 4G toggle. I would really like to disable 4G on the fly when I want to increase my battery life for whatever reason. You have to go and get an app to do it. GFYVZW. Nevermind the encrypted bootloader.

- Some of the google integration creates usage issues. I'm sure this can be undone but for unsophisticated users they are going to get hit with data charges pretty hard. The biggest one to me is that the gallery app now opens your picasa/g+ galleries, and is therefore tapping data everytime you open the gallery. Since they look like they are right there, you can use up a lot of data just flipping through. Also there is the G+ instant upload. Again, these are all things that can be turned off, but it's kind of annoying. My usage of this phone has been much the same as my X for the first week, and I have used 2x my normal rate of data. I installed all of my apps over wifi so it's not that either. That said, since I am on unlimited data, I actually like these features.

- Battery life really is meh. Everyone in the world talks about it being great, so I feel sorry for people with other 4G LTE phones if this is an example of a long lasting one. Part of that may be my intermittent 4G at work - I may just try a day of turning off all mobile data or logging into our guest wifi and see how it does. Cellular standby is usually my second largest power consumption after screen.

- The screen size can be an issue. Not because it should be, but because all of the latest updates to apps seem to assume you are going to use two hands for your phone. You can get away from this with settings, but it annoyed me for instance to have to turn on single hand zooming in google maps.

- The "auto haptic feedback" feature is not ready for primetime. Too many apps are not programmed for it and it creates all kinds of weird shit. For instance, the phone vibrates constantly when using Spotify unless you turn this off. Some other apps have had issues as well.

- I preferred the Motorola interface for placing calls. This is stupidly minor and I will get used to the new one.

- I'm not impressed with my 4G LTE. Perhaps because my work signal is not great and I am on wifi at home, and otherwise I am moving in and out of coverage. But I haven't seen the crazy speeds to make me say "whoa" when doing things on the internet. Hopefully as the network expands this will be more impressive.

- If you are going to drop a weather widget right on the home screen of the device when you first turn it on, that widget shouldn't suck. I actually want to use this thing, I think it looks nice, but it doesn't auto-update for time and position. Right now, my phone is still displaying the weather from Sunday afternoon in Amherst which is the last time I manually refreshed it. How stupid.

- Anything that is "S" branded is basically useless. S-voice is worse than the standard google voice input. S-memo is a nice idea that is done better by third party apps. S-suggest is lame. I expected this, and I am not the target audience for these types of things either.

Things I like:

- I know a lot of people really hate the Pentile display but I really like it. I also have no complaints about the brightness, though it is less bright than some other phones. I think Apple probably still "wins" here for whatever that's worth, but I like this display and the size is great for photos, etc.

- The camera is fantastic. Easily as good as my little Sony Point and Shoot other than the lack of physical zoom. Nighttime and HDR are ten times better than the X and comparable to my friends 4S, although they each have different strengths.

- I actually have quickly gotten used to the glossiness of the phone. I was hesitant at first. Now I like the feel, and I also think it helps with the size for getting into pockets, etc. I loved the slightly rubberized surface of the X but it would get hung up on pocket fabric, etc. The physical button has a nice feel.

- Samsung doesn't automatically push their own music player on you by default every time you make a headphone or bluetooth connection. This was my largest complaint with MotoBlur.

I realize the like list is smaller, but basically it is easier to complain than praise, and I am really happy with this phone. I would be happier if VZW had just delivered it the way all of the other carriers did.

Nice review. On the 4G LTE disappointment, I think this must be a location issue. I was recently in an airport that had no WiFi. I used my Thunderbolt as a hotspot and my co-worker and I were doing emails and surfing the web at blazing speeds.

It's a shame, he won't give me his number.

Serious question, are people liking the home button? I happen to like the 4 haptic buttons on my SII from AT&T. Looks like the SIII has 2 of them (one for menu and the other for back) and took away the search button (I'm assuming because of S-Voice?).

Question: I live in what is basically a renovated garage apartment. The garage is detached from the main house, and the wifi router that all the tenants share is located in the main house. Sometimes my Roku connection (mainly used for MLB.tv and Netflix) is a bit spotty in the living room, so recently, I've been tethering my Roku to my phones 4G hotspot and the improved performance and quality of the stream is night and day.

I have unlimited data, so I assume this won't be a problem, but a google search didn't turn up much. Will I get hit with a huge bill at some point if I continue to do this?

Is it a carrier approved hotspot or did you root and use a third party app? If you aren't paying for the hotspot, or it isn't included in your plan, then I would be worried.

I used one of these aimed at the big house in a similar situation a few years ago. Much improved reception.

So Chrome is a great browser, but two things Dolphin had that I'm already missing are bugging me.Is there a way to exit the browser so that it ends my session rather than just hitting home and leaving the last viewed page open when I go back to the app later? Do I have to tap the tan button and manually x out of each one individually? Also, gestures? I heard Chrome has some, but I can't figure out how to create any, or even use basic ones if they already exist.

I have a Chrome question too. Can you organize your bookmarks or are you stuck with the order they're in? I assumed you could at least do them alphabetically or something but I don't see it in the options.

Am I the only person who actually really likes S-Voice? I love that I can just say an address, pretty much anywhere in the US, and the phone will recognize what I'm saying and bring up navigation to that place. I've tried it a bunch of times, and it's worked perfectly. Now, maybe it can't do everything Siri can do, or it still needs some work, but for what I wanted (saving time typing in addresses, navigation while driving) it works great.
