On one of them, yes. This is a completely different situation.
Just one? I thought it was more than one. Not important, and a hitter should be able to hit on any count. Wait and see if Holmes might continue to be wild. Verdugo obviously envisioned himself getting the winning hit, which couldn't happen on a walk.

I totally understand swinging when a pitcher is struggling and they throw a "get me over" fastball. But that swing is terrible. Look at how off balance he is. His hip is in the dugout. If you're hunting a first pitch fastball down the middle, you need to be on time for it.

People want Verdugo gone… because he swung at a pitch over the middle of the plate with the bases loaded, in a completely meaningless September game? Get a grip.

That's a valid -- but totally different -- issue than whether he should have swung at all. (It's more "don't suck" than "don't be stupid.")

Disagree. You have to take a couple after the guys walks three straight. I'd be interested in what Cora says.
We know he'd be down 0-1 if he took the first one. You really want to give him the take sign at 0-1?

No, I want him gone for the totality of his work. He had to be benched twice this season. How many times has he overthrown a cutoff man allowing runners to advance? How many times has he failed to get a runner in with less than two out. His card may be very good if you're playing Strat-O-Matic, but I've seen enough of him not to want him on the 2024 Boston Red Sox.

My grip on this player feels secure. I am not basing the desire to see him gone on one at bat. He isn't needed next year. If anything, the outfield will be overloaded with Masa, Duran, Rafaela, Abreu. Verdugo has done a lot of stupid things all year.

The totality of his work is the best or second best position player on the team this year. And he's had 18 at bats with a man on 3rd and less than 2 out and has 14 RBI, so probably not that many.

Edit: 24 plate appearances, 1 walk, 1 hbp 6 Ks, 5 sac flies

He's also hit very well with a man on 3rd and 2 out in an equally small sample, so it's complete sample size noise.

I don’t agree with @scottyno often, but yeah.

This team, however, is a tire fire and they’ve played terribly down the stretch two years in a row. Gotta feel like some heads are going to roll if the last place, sub .500 finish they seem headed towards becomes a reality.

This. 1) You can fish for the tying walk with a guy who has control problems and is feeling pressure. 2) Or you can go after hittable pitches.

This was a failure of execution on the second. It's just made more sharp by the fact that the first was probably a good option.

I think they're related. He seemed unprepared for the choice he had made.
This is just post hoc couch analysis. He made a shitty swing at a hittable pitch. There is literally nothing that supports the idea that he was "unprepared." Probably the opposite. "He's gonna groove one here."

Yup, take two pitches with Devers on deck. Absolutely.
And that swing was pathetic.
