What an interesting trade, a swap of two deeply, deeply flawed players.

I must say, I don't really understand it from STL's perspective. While Gyorko is under contract inexpensively until the end of time, I don't see how he provides any kind of upgrade for them at any position. He's cataclysmically bad as a defender anywhere except 2B, and they have to prefer Wong there, right?

SD had zero credible centerfielders, and now they have one semi-credible one. That much I get.

Had the same reaction form the STL side, but read somewhere that they plan to make him a super utility guy. Can't speak to the wisdom of that as I don't know Gyorko well enough to speak to his abilities to handle that, but it certainly seems like an odd move, especially when the Cardinals have the possibility of losing Heyward as well.

Can we talk about the insane deal the DBacks made for Shelby Miller?

Blair/Inciarte/Swanson for Miller is an overpay, IMO.

According to MLBTR, the baseball world is pretty united on this:

The price the Diamondbacks paid was “comically high”...

The deal “looks like a clear, obvious mistake” for the Diamondbacks...

Worst trade I’ve ever seen,” said one.

But hey! The D'Backs also got back former Red Sox 19th round (2013) pick LHP Gabe Speier, who went to Detroit in the Cespedes trade and then to Atlanta in the Maybin trade a few weeks ago.

So Speier has been traded for 3 solid major leaguers in just under a year. ;)

Isn't the basic problem with the AZ trade that it was for Shelby Miller? Why expend those resources for a guy who's not much better than a handful of available FAs (like Mike Leake)? Puzzling, unless saving $5M or so for this year is super important.

Well - I certainly would agree, When their were rumours the Red Sox were sniffing around I rather dreaded giving up good prospects to acquire him. My own basic prejudice against NL East pitchers in general I suppose. But, again, lots of folks have that bias as well.

Maybe it's a "stuff" thing as opposed to results? Maybe scouts drool over this guy?

Definitely satire, although not especially funny or interesting. If you've been following the Sixers' situation, that's what it's riffing off of.

Here is an article from a Philly writer denouncing the Giles trade. After it posts, a few hours (and 100+ comments) later, the writer posts in the comments that the whole article is satire. You be the judge.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20151211_phillies_sports.html#disqus_thread
The problem with the article is that you have to find criticisms of the 76ers rebuild ridiculous for the article to work as satire, and a lot of people (1) don't (2) aren't aware of the 76ers rebuild controversy if they don't follow basketball.

In other news, the Cubs have signed Jason Heyward and are now being touted as favorites to win the WS by the Twitterati.

Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) tweeted at 1:09 PM on Sat, Dec 12, 2015:
#Phillies’ trade of Giles bigger than initially reported. 5-for-2, Velasquez and Appel got to PHI with Eshelman, Arauz and Oberholtzer.

#Phillies announce that they’ve acquired RHP Charlie Morton from the #Pirates for minor-league RHP David Whitehead.
I don't get this. Morton was not great last year, but he's been perfectly serviceable when healthy. He's actually been pretty good, according to his FIP and other peripherals. And that makes sense: he's a sinkerballer who has pitched in front of shaky infield defense. Walker was sure-handed but range-deficient at 2B, and Alvarez was terrible at 3B. Both of those guys have been replaced and upgraded.

You could do a lot worse than Charlie Morton. I guess they're bullish on old friend Alan Webster or Jameson Taillon.

Morton is making 8 million this year. Pirates will use the savings and maybe sign someone better for a bit more.

So again, in light of the Giles deal, it appears that DD really did do his homework before trading for Kimbrel. I think Philly likely demanded the same kind of prospect haul for Giles, and DD probably preferred Kimbrel.

Not here
Or the Kimbrel trade set the market for established relievers.
A GM isn't going to give up more than he thinks a player is worth no matter what other teams do.

It should be pretty clear by now that teams value relievers with a good track record more than most knowledgeable fans do. Maybe the teams are overvaluing relievers. Maybe the fans are undervaluing them. Time will probably not tell because it's really hard to separate the signal from the noise in reliever data.

I agree.

It might make more sense to say that the success of KC's approach to roster construction set the market.

Michael Cuddyer has retired
Compare and contrast to Kobe's retirement article: http://www.theplayerstribune.com/michael-cuddyer-retirement/

A cork wrapped in some yarn, some string, and some leather. One hundred and eight stitches to hold it all together. On its surface, baseball seems like a simple game. It’s what we put into the game that injects it with magic. I’ve been graced by that magic my whole career.

I’ve made the decision to retire. With one year left on my contract, it is especially difficult to imagine not suiting up in a Mets uniform for one more year. As an athlete, retiring is the toughest decision you have to make and I don’t make it lightly. I’ve always run out every hit like it was my last. As an untested high school kid drafted with a dream, I’ve never taken a single moment in the Majors for granted. It goes against every grain in my body to consider a future without the game. But after 15 years, the toll on my body has finally caught up to me.

FWIW, his story about his HS coach benching him as a freshman--I played for that same coach. Dude was an a-hole.

Cueto has signed with the Giants. 6-year deal for more than $120mm, according to Heyman. I think the Giants are going to regret this. Cueto's 29, has a checkered injury history and doesn't exactly keep himself in great shape.

Edit: "checkered injury history" may be too strong on my part given that he's made 66 starts the past two years. His elbow inflammation last year and his 2013 lat injury were what I was thinking of.

The elbow issue scares me, but just taking the ball every five days and being effective is worth it, especially for the price. He's not even being paid $22 million a year - I like this way better than the Samardzija contract.

And the opt out works well for both sides. I bet Cueto feels like he could get more if it wasn't for the balky elbow in the playoffs, and nobody in San Francisco is going to moan about the cheap Giants if they walk away from Cueto to blow away some free agent in 2018.

That Cueto opt-out seems almost perfunctory. The agent wants to get one in there because everybody is getting one, he has to protect his rep. Not sure what the probability is, of 32 year old Cueto opting out, given his injury history.

The real question here is, what do the dodgers do now? That new FO is going to start feeling some pressure, with AZ and the SFG getting better; too bad they're not on the East coast, where fans would flood talk radio with angry calls, that'd be great to watch.

Gammo on Winter Meetings: http://www.gammonsdaily.com/peter-gammons-winter-meetings-over-holiday-shopping-continues/.

"So word would leak about Fernandez. Team X, Y or Z would be mentioned. Mike Hill would then offer the antiphonal response, “we are not shopping Jose Fernandez.”

One Dodger official said, “if we gave them what they wanted, we wouldn’t have one young pitcher left in our organization,” and they moved on. Before the Diamondbacks made theShelby Miller deal, they talked to the Marlins about Fernandez, and were told they’d have to trade five of their best young pitchers and third baseman Brandon Drury for three years of Fernandez. Nyet.

“We thought we might be able to piece something together with the Red Sox,” said a Marlins official. “With ERod (Eduardo Rodriguez), Mookie Betts, Christian Vazquez, Yoan Moncadaand another pitcher I thought we had something that might work.” Why not?"

Dear Florida Marlins -

Fuck You.

Fuck you and your shitty cocaine line of a franchise. Fuck your owner who was probably a slaveholder in a previous life and your Elfin Human Lie of a president.

Fuck you for wasting the primes of two of the most talented and exciting players in the game. Fuck you for screwing the taxpayers so badly that even Miami was forced to notice the overpowering stench almost immediately. Fuck Marlin Man.

I kind of like that you took a chance with the stadium design but what you signed off on is so heinous it's a daily reminder of how bad your judgement is.

You are everything that is wrong with modern capitalism. If you had any dignity you would contact yourselves and go away, leaving only the vague memory of a failed experiment.

p.s. Keep your grubby mitts of our players who you can't afford anyway.

How about Porcello's contract? Almost the same AAV. Never would have imagined that.

Even if you're worried about his Elbow, you could reframe it as a 5-year deal at $26 million a year and still come out ahead if he comes back from TJS like Lackey or others.

Looee II goes to the San Francisco Bay. They're perfect for each other. He might have a Looee I 1972 season for the Giants.

I'll be checking out a Cueto start in Pac Bell some time in May 2016: Looee Bash!
