Probably a good idea, the Padres will need a defensive replacement for Kemp. Even though Upton is about average, it's much better than Kemp.

And obviously getting Kimbrel is big.

Ehh would I have loved Kimbrel ? Sure. Sox probably could have matched the prospect cost and the extra OF dump though.

The pill for the Padres is Upton's deal. He looks utterly cooked. Don't think the Sox would have gone for that at all.

Unbelievable revamping in one offseason: a full OF, a #1 SP, a stud closer, plus Middlebrooks and Norris.

Oh, I agree.  But is there ever a trade involving a player like Kimbrel that doesn't start the caterwauling of "why can't we make that trade"?

Incredible off season for San Diego. The NL West looks like it's going to be pretty exciting this year. I feel bad for Arizona though. The Dodgers, Giants and Padres are going to have a field day with them.

...and the Rockies whimper from the sub-basement "what about us?"

Oh, and does this possibly mean that Myers and such could be traded for Hamels?

Holy smokes.  I guess this is what it took to get rid of Melvin's contract ($46 million over the next three seasons, minus the $8M that Quentin is owed).

Great for the Padres to get Kimbrel, and he's fantastic.  But is any closer really worth taking on Upton's contract, plus giving up Wisler and a pick?

why? why not just stash on the bench and find a way to trade him during the season?

Because they don't want to pay his salary in order to get a PTBNL down the road. They'd rather play the kids. Big old firesale in Atlanta.

For the "where would be play him" part of the evening, I wonder what Freddie Freeman would cost.

It had been said that the Padres offseason  splurge left them without a good defensive CF in a huge ballpark,  and with a less then stellar IF.  Upton to CF and Kemp to 1B?

Close. Myers played 1B a couple of times for the Padres in ST

Anyone know much about the prospects the Braves got back?

Being forced to take Melvin Upton would generally be bad. But Kimbrel is such a premier closer that so long as they didn't give up great prospects it may be worth it.

Wisler is a really good prospect.  He was a top Padres'  prospect and is now ranked as the Braves second best prospect:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2015/#list=atl

Mayo ranked Wisler #70 on his top 100:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2015/#list=prospects

The Braves are clearly rebuilding, trying to reduce payroll while adding young pitching.  They are taking a few steps back to build a stronger team in the future, but will it work out?

BTW, Wisler is rated a little higher than the Red Sox's Eduardo Rodriguez, who is ranked #90.  To acquire Kimbrel, the Red Sox would have needed to move a pretty good pitching prospect while taking on Upton's salary.  In addition, the Red Sox would have needed to include another good prospect equivalent to the draft pick.  In turn, the Padres would have given the Red Sox some salary relief to offset Upton's contract.

I tihink the Padres gave up too much young talent in this trade--I wouldn't want the Red Sox to make it.

This looks like a good deal by a Braves team looking to the future...

but I'm still scratching my head about the Markakis signing.

and letting Varvaro go for so little.

Am I the only one who doesn't like this for SD? That's a lot of money for a guy (Kimbrell) whose elbow could blow at any time? I think this whole thing will end with a horribly underperforming SD team that misses the playoffs and a now bloated payroll.
Good for ATL selling high though.

Yes, but that's a risk for literally every pitcher ever. They're pushing all their chips on the table, and the biggest piece they gave up was Wisler.

Obviously this trade could back fire, but so could EVERY trade they made this offseason. Kemp, Myers, Norris, etc have all come with red flags attached. Honestly, this is probably the least risky trade they've made all offseason.

Any pitcher's elbow could blow at any time koufax.

Melvin actually has some value on the Padres, they desperately need some outfield defense and he provides it. Move Myers to 1B, stick Melvin in CF and hit him 9th. Does he worth the money? No, but he actually improves the team.

Which is why the rebuilding Braves needed to turn him into salary relief and prospects ASAP.

Great trade from the Braves perspective, but like many of us, after this bonkers off-season, I'm now extremely interested to take in some Padres games.

You can separate this into two trades: 1) Kimbrel for a song and 2) a moderately more expensive change of scenery trade.

Quentin is $8 million this year and a $3 million buyout for next year according to MLB radio, and Maybin gets $7 million this year and $8 million next year, with a $1 million buyout. So for 2015 Upton's salary is a wash with what they traded (Quentin $8 and Maybin $7), then in 2016 they have Upton for a net of $4 million (Quentin, $3m buyout + Maybin, $8 million), and in 2017 they have Upton for $14 million (Maybin, $1 million buyout).

And they get Kimbrel for a lottery ticket, a throw in, and a draft pick.

If they cut Upton outright and assign the difference between him and Quentin/Maybin to Kimbrel's contract, it would make Kimbrel's contract 3 years for $51 million (with the option to make it a 4/$64), which seems not so out of line with Mariano Rivera's last few years anyway.

I think the Padres win the trade.

Nick Markakis grew up and played high school and junior college baseball in Northern Georgia.

I was scratching my head too, but I think the Markakis signing had more to do with marketing than actually getting a good baseball player.

Seems more like a win-win for both sides. Braves get salary relief for a closer that would be useless for them until 2017, and a top-100 prospect.

That is one shut down pen if they have a guy like Quackenbush in the minors.  Seems like the Sox may have a trade partner there.
My guess is that the Sox didn't get in on that move because Upton was probably the piece who had to go with Kimbrel.

The Braves are much better off retooling the offense and getting younger this year, since the pitching is still good enough to keep them in games.
Though they are probably a longshot for a wild card spot.

What rock have I been living under that caused me to miss when MLB started allowing the trading of draft picks?
