Ehh would I have loved Kimbrel ? Sure. Sox probably could have matched the prospect cost and the extra OF dump though.Red(s)HawksFan said:Cue the "Sox could have matched that" parade of posts, columns, and radio callers.

The pill for the Padres is Upton's deal. He looks utterly cooked. Don't think the Sox would have gone for that at all.
...and the Rockies whimper from the sub-basement "what about us?"Eck'sSneakyCheese said:Incredible off season for San Diego. The NL West looks like it's going to be pretty exciting this year. I feel bad for Arizona though. The Dodgers, Giants and Padres are going to have a field day with them.
They're just hoping Tulo and Carlos Gonzalez stay healthy enough to trade.nattysez said:...and the Rockies whimper from the sub-basement "what about us?"
Competitive Balance Pick perhaps?E5 Yaz said:I'm sorry, slow today. What's this 41st pick they traded?

why? why not just stash on the bench and find a way to trade him during the season?Darnell's Son said:https://twitter.com/JonHeymanCBS/status/584855079452303360

Yes, but that's a risk for literally every pitcher ever. They're pushing all their chips on the table, and the biggest piece they gave up was Wisler.koufax32 said:Am I the only one who doesn't like this for SD? That's a lot of money for a guy (Kimbrell) whose elbow could blow at any time? I think this whole thing will end with a horribly underperforming SD team that misses the playoffs and a now bloated payroll.
Good for ATL selling high though.

Melvin actually has some value on the Padres, they desperately need some outfield defense and he provides it. Move Myers to 1B, stick Melvin in CF and hit him 9th. Does he worth the money? No, but he actually improves the team.

Nick Markakis grew up and played high school and junior college baseball in Northern Georgia.benhogan said:This looks like a good deal by a Braves team looking to the future...
but I'm still scratching my head about the Markakis signing.
and letting Varvaro go for so little.
Seems more like a win-win for both sides. Braves get salary relief for a closer that would be useless for them until 2017, and a top-100 prospect.Plympton91 said:You can separate this into two trades: 1) Kimbrel for a song and 2) a moderately more expensive change of scenery trade.
Quentin is $8 million this year and a $3 million buyout for next year according to MLB radio, and Maybin gets $7 million this year and $8 million next year, with a $1 million buyout. So for 2015 Upton's salary is a wash with what they traded (Quentin $8 and Maybin $7), then in 2016 they have Upton for a net of $4 million (Quentin, $3m buyout + Maybin, $8 million), and in 2017 they have Upton for $14 million (Maybin, $1 million buyout).
And they get Kimbrel for a lottery ticket, a throw in, and a draft pick.
If they cut Upton outright and assign the difference between him and Quentin/Maybin to Kimbrel's contract, it would make Kimbrel's contract 3 years for $51 million (with the option to make it a 4/$64), which seems not so out of line with Mariano Rivera's last few years anyway.
I think the Padres win the trade.
