So my 4th-grade son has this teacher he loves, partly because he (the teacher) is a big sports fan. The classroom has pictures of Pats and Red Sox players on the walls, and kids are encouraged to show their team spirit on designated days. Sports are incorporated into lessons and general discussion. Today my son came home with the news that this teacher had made a point of addressing the class about deflate-gate, saying that he believed the allegations and would not be rooting for the Pats going forward. Understandably, this confused and rattled my die-hard son - who of course had been innocently thrilled that his beloved team is going to the Super Bowl. My wife and I had to sit him down at dinner and discuss this with him as if it were something really serious, like 9/11, Newtown or Santa Claus. We tried to frame it in terms of how important it is to avoid jumping to conclusions without having facts, and emphasized that while his teacher is entitled to his opinions it was inappropriate for him to pass judgment.

I'm seriously tempted to contact the teacher and/or the school to express my displeasure. Am I an insane fanboy, or am I right in thinking that this was a terrible lack of judgment on the part of an educator who's dealing with impressionable young kids? What is wrong with people???

I'd be on the phone when I heard educational roads were being diverted through pro sports. We pay way too much attention to that shit to begin with, take it way too seriously on the whole (this whole thing is a case in point) and as someone who had no interest in sports at that age, would be concerned how those kids were being reached in that environment. Maybe I'm overestimating how much the guy really uses it.

But yeah, once he's started doing it--pulling the rug out from under the kids like that is totally juvenile. Kind of love how many people (like this guy, presumably) were stalwart through the league giving no shits about concussions, embarrassing itself with it's response to multiple moments of domestic violence from it's players and a near constant run of news about murders and felonies and violence, but this one--this shit he cannot abide (I mean, I get it, it's just--not a great look).

Didn't the Globe say they've seen a letter from the NFL to the Patriots? Do you really think BB and TB would be up there talking about how shocked they are if they were just shocked by Mort's report?

And of course the media is deliberately obfuscating the facts. Talking about "2 pounds lighter" instead of 2 PSI...

Jesus.

The problem with this ENTIRE STORY is that it's based on the false premise that the 2 PSI difference would provide a material advantage.

Please point me to where it is stated that they were tested at the same time. I saw that they were tested. Also, until we know the pregame procedures, it's possible that the colts balls were overinflated.

It's a possibility. Your claim to the contrary is based on a lot of assumptions.

I don't blame you though. We know next to nothing, so almost everything in this thread is speculation.

The NFL has acknowledged they were investigating the matter. That's all it takes. Notice how BB never mentioned the 2 lbs difference either.

Link the Globe report.

But couldn't the Colts balls have initially been inflated much more than the minimum, while the Patriots balls were right at the minimum, legal level?

Belichick came right out and owned up to Spygate the first chance he had, the team cut Aaron Hernandez before the investigations were even concluded, if there's one thing I'm 99% sure about is that they wouldn't be addressing the issue in this way if they knew what went on. It doesn't jive with how they have operated in the past, like them or not they've never tried to hide from these issues.

Patriots were using Colts balls in the first half?  Holy shit if true.  I just fell in love with this story if it's right.

If Jackson kept the ball that he picked and it's a Colts ball, that would fucking be hilarious.

And did those conform to a uniform weight, diameter and whatnot that you had previously taken the time to reduce to the decimal place to fit exacting specifications that you then checked against NCAA rules?  Or, did you just shuffle them around in your hands a bit and go with the best in the batch from week to week?

I shuffled the balls in my hands for a little while and I picked the balls that had the highest seams for movement purposes. As far as Brady is concerned, it sounds to me that the NFL refs checked the balls 2 hours before the game and approved them (unless the refs are worthless and did not measure the balls like they were supposed to, which is very possible). The ball boys then had control of the balls between then and game time, and the balls somehow deflated in that time. My opinion is that the ball boys absolutely would not have messed with the balls unless they were told by the QB that there was a preference. I think Brady was lying in his press conference. I could be completely wrong.

Jackson does, however, recall one interesting moment during the first half that has something to do with the latest controversy. He recalls, during a television timeout, there was an especially long delay that prompted him to approach an official.

The game official mentioned something about their efforts to locate a usable football. Shortly after, Jackson noticed that the Patriots were using the Colts' footballs late in the first half. Jackson said it was odd to him that New England couldn't find a football to use, especially in the AFC Championship Game.

But he never understood that what he was witnessing what would indeed be the beginnings of a controversy that has engulfed the sports world since.

I don't know what value it has... but Brady did... and then immediately paused as he realized he had. I think he was likely coached to not go there or to reference a smaller number like BB did. He made a 13 versus 11 reference.

I tend to doubt it's true.  The balls come from the offense's sideline.

Why? How do you know? What if they started the game at 13.5 and dropped to 12.5, and the Pats started at 12.5 and dropped to 11.5? The point is no actual facts or exact numbers have been reported or info from the NFL besides one tweet from Mortensen who has been wrong before.

He said in the story that he's still looking for it. He gave it to someone to hold for him as a souvenir, but it ended up being turned in.

It is inconceivable that TB12 stood there and lied for 30 minutes. He's the most credible witness I've ever seen. Add to that 20 years of public humility, integrity, and honesty. How could Goodell go up against him? This story is over.

Ok, thanks -- so the period when the refs or whoever the fuck decided to confiscate the footballs is earlier than half time.  It seems like it was some point in the first half.  That's new info.

Not sure what it's relevant to, but holy fuck is this entire thing [becoming] silly.

Using Colts balls at the end of the first half. Brady misses on three passes in the end zone late in the half. Coincidence?

Full disclaimer - I am a Steelers fan. Does anyone here believe what Brady said in the press conference? Do you believe that Brady, who has said in the past he likes the balls deflated, has no idea how the balls were possibly deflated between the ref check and the game? I think this is a really stupid thing, and every NFL QB probably tells the ball boys to get the balls exactly how they want. I also think Brady was lying through his teeth today in his press conference.

Well you root for QB who's raped a bunch of women, so your judge of character isn't great.
