Roy fucked that up. England sat back to play on the counter but he didn't put on anybody that could punish Russia, with both Sturridge and Vardy sitting on the bench. I can understand Wilshere for Rooney to get fresher legs in midfield. Milner for Sterling was just bizarre. Lallana and Milner as wingers, surrounding a gassed Kane, is just awful if you are playing on the counter.
Spot on. I wasn't even aware Kane was on the pitch in the scond half.

There was really nothing from Rooney all game. He shouldn't start next game.

I hope he gets tons of run for ManU next season.

Rooney did make one unbelievable pass to Ali in the first half that very well could have been a goal, it was brilliant.

Evidently the Russian fans threw an Englishman in front of a train in Marseille, he died.

Rooney's shot was right at the keeper. Anywhere else and we're treated to 100 media stories about how great he is. He spent most of his time on the pitch hitting useless Hollywood passes to wide areas. A good switch pass can be deadly but when it's the only thing you do the defense isn't exactly caught unaware by it. Rooney struggled to link with Alli, they felt miles apart the entire match although to be fair to him England had Sterling dropping deep and running the ball forward a fair amount.

I don't think Rooney was awful, Sterling's 2nd half was awful. Kane was quite poor -- he can really put in a stinker when things aren't going well for him. Rooney was fine but England would be better served with Wilshere playing if he's fit enough.

This is a good shot and a very good save.

I can't see the clip posted above but I'm guessing it was the volley. If so that's not exactly something you can aim in the time he had.

I thought Rooney did alright. He had a few good passes and I thought he controlled the tempo well in midfield. Someone in another thread mentioned something about how he doesn't have the killer through ball like some attacking midfielders but I don't think Kane was making the type of runs to get those balls to him. He put in a good shift defensively and helped out Dier when needed. The Guardian is actually full of praise for him and gave him a 7 out of 10 for the evening.

Hodgson needs to gamble more. Not putting on Vardy or Rashford was a mistake.

Rooney was a world class striker...he's a solid, hardworking midfielder with some skill and vision. I'm not positive he makes the England squad if he isn't Wayne Rooney.

I thought he was fine tonight; nothing to get worked up about either way.

If he wasn't the captain I don't think he'd be STARTING anyway. He may still make the squad. I don't have to stretch the imagination to think he's one of the 23 best guys in England but he shouldn't be a starter.

I thought Rooney settled well. Created some chances. If he's in the squad, that's his role. In front of Dier, behind Alli.
Milner carriers more water, but not more possibility. Who else? Wilshire, perhaps, until next injury or smoke break.

If fit, Wilshere is definitely the better option for that deeper lying central midfielder. He is a much better passer, can dribble out of pressure, and, while not great defensively by any means, at least has more fine tuned defensive instincts for that position. Wilshere won man of the match in like 4-5 straight qualifiers playing in that position and was probably England's best player for most of the qualifying period. But he has missed the last nine months and probably isn't in form yet.

I thought Rooney played fairly well last night, stitching things together. But Russia was a bad team decimated by injuries, particularly in midfield. I don't have much confidence in Rooney matching up with better midfields.

Modric! Wow.

That attempt is skied into stands 19 times out of 20.

The American commentator called the Turkish club "Besk-tass". I think that's worse than JP Dellacamera's infamous "Glasgow Celtic"

Kompany is really impressive in analysis at the desk. Not surprising considering his Twitter presence , but I hope we see more of him going forward.

Turkish fans ensure I will never root for Turkey at anything.

Between the racial abuse of black players to throwing trash at opposing players taking corners... they are not a friendly bunch.

And another awful, somehow cardless, challenge. They flop like holy hell too

I'm out. Go Modric

There was one like that during England/Russia too.

I'm watching an ITV stream and neither time has the commentary team said a thing so I guess they're not as on edge as we viewers about France's recent issues with terrorism.

In the England game they said it was "a flare". Not sure if sanctioned or smuggled into the stadium.

German team interviewed about last minutes before the game, several routines before the game:

-Khedira: You motivate yourself, getting ready, others making their hair, others going to the toilet.
-Hummels: Everyone has their routines - i just wanna get dressed!
-Podolski: We have several guys that motivate each other. We´re getting loud. We push each other, myself included, Müller, others.
-Gomez (the best): Yeah, we´re getting dressed, some going to the toilet. I´m always going to the bathroom. For a long time in my career, I just took the left urinal. Now, i´m older, so if the left box is occupied, i can also live with the right one.

Liked Neuer's decision making on that corner. Realized he wasn't getting his hands on it, retreated back to the line, and made a nice save off a good header.

California. Duh.
The French sponsorship laws always crack me up. They ban alcohol ads, but will take Carlsberg's money and allow them to display the "Probably the best in the world" ads with Probably in the same script as Carlsberg as long as they don't mention the brand name.

Schnerres, why do you think Low won't play Muller at CF? It seems to make so much more sense than playing Goetze as a false nine.
1) Löw seems to like Götze as a striker.
2) AM is Müller´s natural position. He can play as a forward, ofc, but he is so much better, when he´s just strolling around (and more involved) as an AM and then running into some space to score.

Germany really lucky to lead here. The defense looked very shaky the last 20mins, after they let the Ukrainians run some fast counters. Plus they had some trouble on set pieces. The beginning was encouraging, with fast passes into good (deep) positions and some trouble on long balls from Kroos and esp.Boateng. Reporter said Hummels is ready for the next game, if he won´t have any setbacks. You have to hope for more stability.
I hope Ukraine won´t score here, they only received 5 goals in 12 (including playoffs) qualifying matches. Steady defense.
