I really think Bloom told Cora to use this guy tonight over his objections.
Yeah, something like that. Unless we hear there is a Covid outbreak, this is Cora going out in a blaze of glory. It has to be front office meddling.

If true, it is hard to judge Cora without knowing what is going on. This smacks of the front office deciding to take the foot off the gas for the season, and Cora being pissed.

I really want to see the Red Sox score exactly 9 in the 9th and Barraclough to come back out for the 10th.

So this is all part of Cora’s plan? He knew Sale wasn’t gonna last so Bear Claw was gonna take it no matter which way it fell. Horrible management. Too many short starts and “bullpen” games. He’s gotta go.

The front office never put the foot on the gas this season

It really strains credulity to believe the GM is threatening his own standing in order to force the manager to use a journeyman pitcher.
Just as believable as the idea that the manager of a team in a playoff race threw a game to send a message to his gm

Why would this threaten Bloom’s standing?

Maybe all the openers and calling up Barraclough were Cora’s idea, but I’m skeptical. A lot of this stuff has to be influenced by the FO.

I have been a Sox fan for more than 50 years, seen a ton of great wins and a lot of brutal loses, but the worst thing about this season and this team is that management has allowed this team to become an absolute laughingstock. It's not just getting blasted tonight, it's having absolutely zero pitching, totally pathetic defense, mind numbing lack of fundamentals. For the first time in my life, i see no light at the end of this tunnel. It's very , very sad.

You know they have a winning record right?

You have to wonder if a game like this loses the locker room a little bit. Adam Duvall hits a massive homer, the team is hyped, and then before you know it your manager has conceded the loss.

If management is going to mail it in, why should you care?

I suppose it's possible for Barraclough's outing to become almost as celebrated as Eovaldi's in the World Series. I wouldn't bet on it, though.

I wonder if the last Red Sox pitcher before tonight to pitch the fin al 4.1 innings after the starter went 4.2 was Pedro in the Florie game

I thought about that same thing for a minute. Or Wakefield's Game 3. But then I thought of early 2011 John Lackey and it was a better comp.

Please with the excuses for Cora. The beat writers will lob softball questions as usual. Cora will say "Are we good?" after a few bullshit answers and move on.

Give me a break.

Yes the plan coming into tonight was definitely for him to throw 100 pitches out of the bullpen

Yeah, sadly I agree.

I was on board with this team before Opening Day, I love a lot of the players, and enjoy the personalities on the team. Obviously my 97 win prediction was tongue in cheek, but I expected pretty good things from this team. They have exceeded a lot of people's expectations, and, quite honestly, came pretty close to mine.

But the Schreiber game in Seattle really kicked my ass in regards to my enjoyment of games going forward, and I can't imagine being invested in another game this season after what happened tonight.

I like the future, I think it is bright. But I am really disappointed by what has happened over the past 3 weeks.

yes, but the ballpark has become a visitors home game, the team can't pitch, hit sporadically, and just cannot field. I want to be optimistic but they give me very little reason.
