Cameron Erving or Laken Tomlinson would have been options for the Patriots, had either made it to No. 32. But as it all worked out, you probably will not hear anyone complaining in Foxborough. New England closed Round 1 by taking Texas defensive lineman Malcom Brown, a 319-pounder with a quick first step. More importantly, Brown has the type of versatility that Bill Belichick craves up front—he can play a five-tech, a three-tech or even slide down and play nose. He'll fill some of the snaps vacated by Vince Wilfork's departure, but do so while offering more three-down potential than the run-stuffing veteran. Brown was productive at Texas, and he's a great value for New England here.

“A lot went into it because I had to finish school, my wife had to finish school, so that took a lot of thought because both of us wanted to finish,” Brown said. “And I had to think about moving my family around, stuff like that. So, we sat down and talked and came up with the best decision was to come out.”
“It just gives me more (motivation),” Brown said. “I’m not just playing for myself anymore — I’m playing to support my family. I can’t just think about myself when I make decisions. I have to think about my daughters and my wife being supportive, so I have to give it my all.”
“I go out and I have fun,” Brown said. “I don’t go in with the mindset that it’s going to be a hard practice. I’m going in to have fun, (the) offense is gonna to have a hard time blocking me, I’m gonna get them in trouble. I’m gonna push them to do better. Coaches know I’m gonna practice hard.”
“I mean, I could have tacked on another good year,” Brown said. “(Declaring) wasn’t just striking when the iron’s hot, because I could have had another hot year. It was more just about talking to everybody, taking everything into consideration, and at the end of the day I just made a good decision.”
“Well, when I was growing up, I was just always around older folks — everybody said I was young but an old soul,” Brown said. “That’s just how I grew up. When I play, I know when it’s time to get serious and I know how to switch it on and off. I know how to get serious and take on responsibility. Just growing up I’ve always been around that.”

Probably see this a bunch but I love how Brown's entire family and group of friends are cheering wildly and jumping up and down while he just sits there soaking it all in. Pretty nice.soxhop411 said:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRYc8iET4ZI&feature=youtu.be&app=desktop

I really enjoyed that clip. Like Andrew said, he can't stop grinning. This reminds me so much of the Wilfork pick. Big young DT that is supposed to go in the teens, and manages to fall into our lap. Its a great need pick to replace Vince's snaps, and he was also the best player available. This work out perfectly for the pats.
I still can't believe how dumb the colts were. DT is a giant glaring weakness, and your team can't stop the run at all. The team you are trying to catch up to destroys you on the ground. In fact, the patriots are so sure you are taking Brown that they get a trade ready to move down in the draft. So naturally the colts take a WR.

You guys didn't notice that the 4 year old was his STEP-daughter right? Not his kid. His is 8 months. I'd say that's pretty mature. A lot of guys would not want to take on another person's child, especially at that age.Turrable said:I guess that's a word for it
And also a Cowboys balloon, a few NFL balloons, and some other balloons that I can't make out. I doubt Green Bay or Dallas was explicitly where he thought he'd be going, some family member probably just picked up a few different teams' balloons for their draft party.Corsi said:There's a random Packers balloon in the background of that video. Sounds like you are judging him. The dude is married and taking care of his responsibilities. Not a lot of 19/20 year olds would marry someone that already has a child by someone else.
We know BB loves all football guys and Brown does have a quote about how he's not all football. We'll see. Lot's of positives. And this is something that makes football more important:

Agreed. Plus, a lot of guys at that age do not take responsibility for their biological children either, never mind step-children, particularly at 20 years old. I wasn't ready to be a father at 20, and I don't think most 20 year olds are really ready for that. But it happens and what people do after that says more about their maturity level then the decisions (or mistakes, as the case may be) that got them there.

tmorgan said:I was looking to see about personnel groupings the Pats had used on D and how that might change with Brown. It looked like last year there was a lot of Wilfork and Chris Jones inside together with Nink and Chandler Jones (Ayers when he was out) outside for more of a traditional 4-3. That look seems like it'll be pretty similar with Brown, but maybe the alternate looks where Wilfork was more of a nose will be a bit more rare? It also seems like given size and his run stopping role he'll need to be integrated quicker than Easley or Jones were their rookie years, or they'll be pretty vulnerable until he gets up to speed.
The fact that two RBs went in the first round and several teams reached for o-linemen probably had something to do with it.Bleedred said:Why did he drop to 32? Colts stupidity and other teams had needs elsewhere?

I like how on SoSH the discussion was "please no spoilers, social media disrupts the aesthetic experience" and on this forum it was "how on earth are people finding out about picks early?"Ed Hillel said:The Colts Forum was not happy with how this went down:

I love everything about the video-down to him wearing shorts and a polo shirt to dress up for the biggest day of his life. Looks like an absolute home run of a pick.
EDIT: It also looks like the Pats just assumed the Colts were going to take him. You can just imagine the Pats' war room. "Might as well drop to 51 at this point--fucking colts getting a top 12 pick at defensive tackle, that really fills a hole for them, and ... what?
