Brewers up 1-0 on the Twins in the 4th, bases loaded, 2 outs, and Manny Margot bunts the first pitch towards third with the infield back. It's not the best bunt ever but the infield is back and Margot is fast, but Joey Ortiz barehands it on one hop while charging in full steam and somehow barely gets Margot at first, very impressive play.

This Yankees vs Arizona game is spectacular. 2-2 after 9, Verdugo hits a 2 run shot in the top of the inning to go up 4-2. Arizona scores one on an error, a passed ball gets the runner to third, and then they tie it on a Corbin Carroll slow roller that he beats out.

On to the 12th.

Any chance they extend him? Or way more likely he's traded at the deadline?
Unless Bieber gets injured again and has to take a deal short on years and full of incentives, there's a 0% chance he's wearing a Cleveland jersey in 2025. I think, like Lindor, he's been happy in Cleveland but accepts that it's business and won't turn down tens of millions of dollars to stay the way Jose Ramirez has.

The problem will be if he leads Cleveland to the top of the mediocre heap that is the AL Central during the first half of the year and they're faced with either trading an ace while shuffling the deck and pretending to contend or keep him and settle for draft compensation. They were right not to settle for any of the discounted trade offers over the winter due to the way last season went for Bieber. The work he put in over the winter getting healthy and improving his fastball is paying off.

Unfortunately, the Guardians had to graduate 60% of a rotation from the minors last year due to injuries and their other prospect with ace potential (Daniel Espino) has suffered career-altering injuries, so this is the weakest the pitching pipeline has been in many years. Even Joey Cantillo, who I think is a longshot to begin with due to control issues but would be the one major league talent in the AAA rotation, is out for two months with a hamstring injury. They're at least 2-3 years away from another good in-house starter unless they land one at the deadline for Bieber.

Mets 0-5 with another game today, they haven’t started a season 0-6 since 1963.

Nimmo and Lindor at the top of the Mets lineup are a combined 2-42 with 8 walks so far this season, .319 and .237 OPSs respectively.

Francisco Lindor 1227 career games, 42.4 bWAR. Guaranteed $393.4M earnings over 16 years.
Jose Ramirez 1300 career games, 45.9 bWAR. Guaranteed $166M earnings over 14 years.

Cleveland chose wisely. It's insane in today's game what little regard Jose Ramirez has for making money.

I'm so rarely correct, but after five games I'm feeling pretty good about my "watch out for the Tigers! For serious this time!" posts from the offseason.

One of my favorite things about the pitch clock is how fast meltdowns happen.

One of my least favorite things about the pitch clock is when those meltdowns involve the Rays going from 6-2 down in the 9th to tied in about 18 seconds.

Wow the Rockies stink.

94 straight series now, that the Orioles haven’t been swept. Regular season qualifier must be included.

Kimbrel with a save for 8 teams now.

Pete Fairbanks in for the save for Tampa in a one run game. 3 hitters, 3 walks, and gets the hook

You know, I kind of hope Bryant plays well enough this year to convince some other team to rescue him from Colorado. I am aware that this will take Colorado eating some money and/or stapling an excellent player to him and/or taking on another bad deal in exchange and they've never seemed to be that creative of a front office. But still!

You gotta love these types of players…

You have a AAAA pitcher whose spot on the 40-man roster has become problematic, so you trade him for a 25-year-old AA/AAA player who catches and plays third base, some first, and can even cover a corner of the outfield in a pinch. The new acquisition puts up a solid batting line in AAA and proves himself useful as an organizational guy. The next year he pummels AAA pitching for a month, but he's 27 and was such a low cost acquisition, you figure he's still not on the MLB radar, everyone knows it's never going to translate. However, the MLB catching situation is a mess so they give him a shot... and it translates.

David Fry has become the quintessential addition to the modern short MLB bench. He's a third catcher who can play wherever you need him. He's a better hitter than 2-3 guys in the starting lineup, so he can pinch-hit and get semi-regular at-bats on a team that lacks a DH. He'll look terrible on one pitch and then punish the opponent when he tries to go there again. He has Cleveland ahead today with 3-run homer and is 5-for-9 with 3 walks and 0 strikeouts on the young season.

Brennan Miller's umpire scorecard for today is not going to be pretty. Maybe he wasn't picking up the ball from Nick Sandlin's submarine style, but Sandlin only threw 17 pitches and got 4 strike calls on pitches that missed by several inches, both outside and low. I think it was the Twins hitting coach that got tossed without leaving the dugout.

First time in Alex Bregman’s career his team has been 5 games under .500, the last time for the Astros was June 2016 and he was called up in July 2016.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Marlins, seeking their first win, are up 8-1 over STL in the 7th.

When I am out and about and want to have a random Boston/Baseball conversation, I wear my Sox hat. When I'm out and about and don't wish to discuss baseball at all, I wear my Marlins hat.

I have never had anyone try to strike up a conversation re: the Marlins with me, not even in Miami. Boston - all the time.
