This seems like the first time a "mainstream" reporter has specifically said the bolded wrt to the Red Sox.
His sourcing is

1) one source with direct knowledge of the process (what process? Whose? Unclear)

And

2) someone who is “in contact with the Yankees”

even as these kinds of breaking news/horse race stories goes that’s really thin. Most notably, there’s no reason to believe he has talked to anyone any closer to the player (rather than the team he is paid to cover) than anyone here has!

maybe it means something maybe it doesn’t but team-side sourcing is particularly susceptible to spin.

Everything is bs fake news until it’s what you want to hear.
oh, to be clear, I’d say same about a Sox wroter with a story like that. My point is we should all be more critical about the sourcing and details in these kinds of articles. Not specific to Martino or Yankee reporters.

I hope it means Yamamoto wanted to follow up and give the Yankees a chance to meet or exceed his best offer before signing with them. But it could be his agent wanting to making a show of things to prompt another team to increase their offer.

Regardless, I think the competition is fierce enough that YY will have several roughly equal offers that allow him to go where he most wants to play, with the possible exception of the Dodgers.

Edit: YY didn't have to visit the Yankees again for his agent to communicate the current highest offer to Cashman.

My hope is he was meeting with NY to tell them he'd be happy to sign there if they dump the idiotic facial hair rule and take away all in-game decision making from Boone.

I just don’t understand the implication. If he was in the area for the Mets meeting and he is considering the Yankees wouldn’t he ask to go there?

Either way, I think I’m out on this for a while. He needs to pick a team and we are acting like he’s the greatest pitcher in the history of the world.

Would love to sign him, but my god is this tiring.

The only implication I am willing to draw is that YY is looking to maximize money. Because this seems like how you would try to do that.

Which a week ago would have been a “no shit,” but after Ohtani, I guess that sometimes we are talking about so much money that the last few million is relatively unimportant.

Edit — inference not implication. Damnit.

Piecing together tweets from across the thread, the definitely totally accurate sequence of events seems to be:

1) Sox invite Yamamoto to Fenway
2) While he's over here, he calls the Mets and Yankees too.

So hopefully the Sox are in the driver's seat, and the other meetings were mostly to make them sweat/increase the offer. That's what i am telling myself tonight so I can sleep like Lou Merloni.

I think this is a very good reading. We are favourites IMO.

“Hello, Brian? Good news! Yamamoto is doing second interviews with all the finalists and he liked your initial pitch. He wants to schedule a second meeting with you and your team. Are you interested? No, no, you don’t have to come back out to LA. He is requesting to meet all the finalists in their cities and facilities. OK great, see you then!”

New York media: IT WAS YAMAMOTO WHO REQUESTED THIS SECOND MEETING!

We’re all guessing here but this reads to me like a guy who’s genuinely torn on where to sign. Assuming money isn’t a differentiating factor, this could be more about a fit. And that’s the hardest thing for anyone to get a read on since none of us knows what makes him tick. My hope is that the Dodgers, Giants, and Phillies are all out. The latter two have seemingly not generated much noise. The Dodgers got the Glasnow stuff done quickly so I’m hoping they’re not liking their chances either.

I am, once again, getting my hopes up here. Decent chance Sox might be in the final 3.

If he came came to visit and try out the pitching mounds, would Fenway even have a mound installed at this time of year?

Maybe he wanted to try sun-bathing with Casas?

Just saw a television interview Masataka Yoshida did in Japan. Said he met with Yamamoto to discuss playing in the US. Also acknowledged his need to improve and steps he’s taking in terms of conditioning, etc. Nothing too surprising, but he did meet with Yamamoto.

One can look at this pessimistically too, in that while he specifically requested 2nd meetings with both NY teams, he only accepted an invitation to Fenway, i.e. he didn't request a 2nd meeting with us, & since he was in the NE anyway, figured he'd take us up on the invitation.

We'll see...

Yeah, that’s he’s calling the Yankees and Mets while meeting with the Sox doesn’t sound super to me:

Long time lurker, first time poster, yadda yadda yadda.

I was going to make my first post say "am I the only one who hates that there are Yankee fans hoping for the success of the Yankees over the Red Sox in a Red Sox thread in the Red Sox forum of a Red Sox message board?"

But in the spirit of the season I'll say instead "it's good to know I'm not the only one experiencing the roller coaster of anxiety and angst that is the inexorable fate of being a Red Sox fan".

Thing is it was only Heyman who did that. And it’s because he’s, by far, the very worst yankee reporter at his job. He’s very vey bad.

Our MFY fans are the good ones and their forum choices are toxic garbage.

Do we have confirmation on a second Sox meeting? I'm getting (staying?) nervous.

Good on Yamamoto for taking his time — it’s an important decision in his life, and all that. He should take another week if that’s what he wants. But I’ll be glad when this is done and the Sox can commence building the rest of the roster.

That’s the thing about this that’s so heavy. Right now it feels like it’s Yamamoto or bust because literally nothing is happening until he makes a decision.

What a first post. Above you on this page are three Yankees fans who’ve taken on the usually thankless, presumably unpaid, and obviously aggravating responsibility of moderating this board. If their presence bothers you so much, you might be better off finding yourself an echo chamber elsewhere.

A simpler way to read this is that he now has an offer in hand from the Red Sox and is shopping it around NY to see if one of the two teams will beat it. And it's probably more complicated than just years and $$$ or AAV so he wants to do it in person.

Yikes...I obviously got off on the wrong foot here.

For the record, I have nothing against any of the posters here, regardless of fandom, and definitely do appreciate the work of the moderators, as well as all the very knowledgeable posters. That's why I follow this site and not the echo-chambers.

I guess a few posts just triggered too many unpleasant memories of pre-2004 taunting and harassment, and I reacted with a knee-jerk, poorly thought out post that didn't fit with the quality of this site. I should have known better, having read SoSH (off and on) for many years.

My sincere apologies to everyone I angered or offended. I'll pause and think harder before posting again.

I’d guess this is correct; and would hopefully give the Sox one last final call.

Eh, your post was well written and showed some thought. You just possibly didn’t have the context of the long positive relationship we have with a lot of our yankee poster members (except crow. He needs to learn how to treat his mutz).

Please keep posting, sometimes this place can be intimidating, but new people, and especially women, bring a lot of value to the board. Keep reading and give it another shot.
