Just a general notice: Referencing Chao may become deemed a suspension worthy offense at some point. He's in the area of Wilbur and that sports law guy who got disbarred and is wrong about everything but who people keep citing anyway.

Dr. Awesome is a couple of orders of magnitude better at least. Follow him at @ChrisGearyOrtho if you are so inclined.

Check the picture in this thread. The injury was non-contact.
Sorry, I must have missed the "brutal hit that caused this injury" since he got it planting his foot. I also must have missed the brutal hit that caused his "abdomen injury" and forced him to miss the Jets game.
Tongue in cheek I think?

Yes, tongue in cheek. I don't get the worrying over his injury future due to this. He's never had a knee injury before. It was a flukey non-contact injury. We've been through this all with Amendola and Gronk -- I don't feel any different about his ability to stay healthy long-term because of today (assuming full recovery from today).

And Dr. Awesome has never lost his privileges at Scripps, or anywhere else, like Chao has. Google Chao Scripps if you're curious. Or just go to the California Medical Board site.

Non-contact knee injury followed by being ruled out for the game in about five minutes... Smells like an ACL for Lewis. DAMMIT. #Patriots

Lewis also played two full heavy usage college seasons at Pitt without suffering an injury that caused him to miss a game. Abdomen thing aside his only other two injuries (leg and knee) were not of the chronic variety. His injury risk moving forward is going to be high for the simple fact that he's an NFL running back but I don't see Lewis carrying any more risk than your average shifty RB.

Stretched but not torn (I have one) needs rehab and a brace.
I'm not going to lie to you... this isn't a thing. Your ACL either tears or it doesn't - stretched is not an option.

And I have a bad feeling that Lewis' is torn. If Schefter's source is right and his ACL is "loose"... he's done until next year.

As the New England Patriots bask in the glow of their first 8-0 start since 2007, they’re a little nervous about one of the more underrated players on the team’s offense.

Per a league source, the Patriots and running back Dion Lewis currently are awaiting the results of an MRI conducted Sunday night on a knee Lewis injured during Sunday’s win over Washington.

Lewis has only 234 yards rushing on the season, but he has added 388 receiving yards. He has four total touchdowns.

His modest numbers understate his impact on the offense, providing a degree of elusiveness none of the team’s other tailbacks possess. Indeed, the ordinarily zero-tolerance Bill Belichick has put up with fumbles and drops from Lewis, given his unique skill set.

I guess this means we should know more by the morning

To update Rev's post. It has become suspension worthy to quote Chao.
Point of order: Can we quote Chao in order to make fun of him and/or his drunken, malpractice-y antics?

As a source he is Incarcerated Bob or Baghdad Bob or Bob Roberts bad.

Hoo-hoo-hoo hoosier land.
If we get the worst case news I wonder if they bring Cadet back in? Looks like he's still a free agent.
Probably depends on the health of the o-line. They will need to sign a FA OT or promote someone from the practice squad if both Cannon and Vollmer are still out.

And their assessment of White, of course. I'm not sure that his inactivity (as opposed to Bolden) had been due to anything other than redunancy with Lewis and the fact that he doesn't play special teams.

Any chance we might see either Amendola or Edelman take some of the snaps/functions that Lewis had? Seems like the three of them have a lot in common, both as receivers and as shifty runners in open space, and we know that both DA and JE are good blockers so conceivably they could be useful in blitz pickup.

With LaFell's successful return and reintegration into the offense, it seems like it could be a way to get all three (DA, JE, and BL) into the lineup without going 5 wide (assuming Gronk plus either Chandler or Williams)

I don't think so. Lewis gets space because defense are accounting for Edelman. I think Lewis works because the other guys are out there with him--speaking mostly of Edelman.

I wonder if the 'ACL is loose' was a communication issue. Maybe what they were actually told was 'the knee was loose' and they interpreted that as ACL is loose. A sprained knee seems inevitable based on the non-contact fall to the ground grabbing the knee, but then again I'm probably trying to find hope.

A "loose" ACL could conceivably mean just a partially torn ACL, which is still bad, but he could conceivably rehab and be back by the playoffs. But of course I'm grasping at straws until the MRI....

This is the first name that came to my mind as a replica of White, who was a replica of the role Lewis played, for the role of "inactive emergency RB." The NFL practice squad rules really hurt a veteran like Cadet as he would have been an ideal candidate to land on the practice squad to easily be the next man up with an injury to Lewis or White.

Dri Archer is also out there. Obviously he didn't work out with the Steelers, but he has some of the attributes the Patriots look for in a receiving back. Certainly worth bringing in for a workout.

Henry Anderson -- the very promising DL for the Colts -- hurt his knee well after Lewis in the afternoon game and has already been placed on IR. Perhaps Dion just hasn't had his MRI yet. Too many conflicting reports to know.

Whistling past the graveyard perhaps, but I've seen RB after RB step into this offense and be successful, and every time one of them has left they were replaced and the offense survived just fine. I hope he's not done, but the season isn't over if he is.

It is plausible that (a) Lewis injury is real bad but not definitively season-ending and (b) the prognosis for Vollmer, Cannon and Mason is collectively cloudy, and so the team is gauging the severity of the O-line situation before deciding whether to hold a roster spot for Lewis in hopes of a return? I don't know that much about roster management... just trying to picture a scenario that would lead to a prolonged weighing-of-options rather than a straightforward announcement.

They might be getting a second opinion, they might be figuring out the roster, they might be exploring replacements, etc. I don't think much is gained from the team's perspective by announcing the news as quickly as possible. With Solder, the news didn't hit until Wednesday morning and that was very shortly before the team officially placed him on IR.

Basically, nobody knows and there's nothing you can productively read into the silence right now.

And I remember how atrocious (by Patriots standards) the offense was at the start of 2013 and how with the addition of each guy -- Gronk & Vereen in particular -- they seemed to get that much better. It's still a top offense without somebody as good as Dion in that role but my confidence that they can put up 30 on a Seahawks or Broncos defense goes down. Basically, with Dion, I'm not sure they can be stopped. Rushing out of the backfield he is the yin to Blount's yang. Need to get out of a deep 'and-long' hole? Try a screen to Dion, he'll make 45 guys miss. Need to create a mismatch on a tough defense? Split him out wide and make the defense decide which guy who is uncoverable by LBs gets covered by a LB.

Without him, one of the better defensive coordinators with the right mix of talent is likely to have sustained success. In BB I trust -- he usually finds a way to make it work but it's really hard to adjust for a big loss of talent after the trade deadline when you don't have a great replacement. Hopefully that time a good DC with a strong D has sustained success isn't in the playoffs.

The offense got better when the offensive line figured things out. I honestly think they'll be fine and would be more worried about Vollmer's injury being longer-term.

They also tore up the Jets without Lewis and didn't even try to run.

Tough loss for the offense but as the roster is constructed now, he's probably the fifth most important piece offensively.

1.) Brady
2.) Gronk
3.) Edelman
4.) Vollmer
5.) Lewis

Hopefully White can step in and provide some production. I do not want to see large doses of Brandon Bolden, even with his nice TD yesterday.

Idk I feel like people are reacting as if we lost Gronk. It hurts no doubt. However, I'd say Lewis was objectively 4th on most important offensive player list behind 1)Brady 2) Gronk 3) Edelman. Hurts. But i don't think they'll miss much if they up Gronk's usage in passing game.
