Isn't Whitlock the relief ace? What do we think about the Sox bullpen? Do they need another arm or two? Not sure how confident to feel about Barnes as our relief ace.
You can't have enough pitching. What do we think about the Sox bullpen? Do they need another arm or two? Not sure how confident to feel about Barnes as our relief ace.
Fair point, I guess possibly? Will be interesting to see how he and Houck are used this year. Feels like they could use another experienced arm who could close if need be, though.Isn't Whitlock the relief ace?
Probably Wacha eventually when Paxton is back.Fair point, I guess possibly? Will be interesting to see how he and Houck are used this year. Feels like they could use another experienced arm who could close if need be, though.
What are we looking at right now….Barnes-Whitlock-Houck-Taylor-Brasier-Sawamura-Hernandez-Davis?
I definitely wouldn't mind one more arm, and I've never been comfortable with Barnes as the closer. Hell, I wanted to sell high on him last season. I think Houck is probably in the rotationFair point, I guess possibly? Will be interesting to see how he and Houck are used this year. Maybe, but he's been a starter for pretty much his whole career. A mediocre starter, but a starter. Maybe his stuff will play in the bullpen, but I think anything they get out of Wacha is gravy.Probably Wacha eventually when Paxton is back.
The Sox seem to really value position flexibility. Soler gives them a bad option in right and left, when Schwarber gives them a terrible option. Not wild about Soler. The bat is probably a little undervalued now that he’s liberated from the Royals’ contact-oriented hitting philosophy but he’s a butcher in right field (-7 OAA in 2021). If they’re considering him for DH, Schwarber’s a far better fit.
The Sox bullpen was, IMO, the team's achilles that badly needed another arm or two. I still feel that way. What do we think about the Sox bullpen? Do they need another arm or two? Not sure how confident to feel about Barnes as our relief ace.
That's definitely an inside joke in my house as well.HOLY SHIT! I have talked to my daughters about the “Peanuts! Pistachios!” guy all the time — mimicking his accent and saying it (which they hate) and telling them how he was such a big part of my early experiences going to Fenway with my Dad. Thanks for sharing this video — brought back a lot. Too funny.
I’ve been interested in Soler as a fallback option, because his numbers in Atlanta were similar to his 2019 breakout. As a power RH bat with poor defense, he also fits well on the roster with JBJ and Verdugo. But I would not really want to give him a 3 year deal, let alone 5, unless we’re talking very low AAVs.Is Jorge Soler being undervalued around here?

You know what? Just let them field a AAAA team and lose a bunch of Toronto games. Idiots get what they deserve.
Why do I get the feeling that MLB will make the Jays play home games stateside rather than have high profile players forced to miss games?
This isn’t a criticism of the teams, of course, but I was excited to keep refresh SoSH and MLBTR to read about all the dominoes falling this weekend. Not 2021 NFL Draft excited, but maybe July 2017 NBA free agency excited.Remember when people thought there was going to be a fun, wild spree of activity when teams could officially sign players?
I'd be totally fine with the Jays winning 120 games this season due to sensible covid policy. Why do I get the feeling that MLB will make the Jays play home games stateside rather than have high profile players forced to miss games?
Unvaccinated Ace for Sale. You know what? Just let them field a AAAA team and lose a bunch of Toronto games. Idiots get what they deserve.
I imagine the Sox marketng department putting the following into a slowly scrolling upward graphic accopanied by some power chord guitar.Remember when people thought there was going to be a fun, wild spree of activity when teams could officially sign players?
He seems very similar to Darwinzon, no? Granted more experienced and has had big league success but they have similar profiles.Handedness doesn't really come into play with him. It's a neutral split.
He's a fasten your seat belt type guy. Tons of k's 12+/9 the past 3 seasons, tons of walks 5+/per 9 over the same span.
And hey he saved 7 games last season. Back up closer!
Like button needed. Now they'll never be able to give more money to X or Raffy
Seems like it though Darwinzon is more wild but still with potential to improve. His split is extreme, so he at least fits in situationally. He seems very similar to Darwinzon, no? Granted more experienced and has had big league success but they have similar profiles.
No love for Matt Strahm???I imagine the Sox marketng department putting the following into a slowly scrolling upward graphic accopanied by some power chord guitar.

Hill being an upgrade on Richards is a potential upgrade. And eventually Paxton. The pitching staff doesn’t appear to me, at least, to be upgraded from the one they ended last season with. But, I guess it all comes down to Sale, Whitlock, and Houck (and to a lesser extent, Barnes).
But also E-Rod is gone.Hill being an upgrade on Richards is a potential upgrade. And eventually Paxton.
Ottavino too. While he wasn’t spectacular, he did pitch 63 innings in 69 games at a 113 era+ / 3.96 fip. Only Whitlock had more innings out of the pen. I guess a lot of those innings go to a healthy Brasier, and Diekman? Potentially Houck, although I would expect he or Whitlock to be in the rotation before long. But also E-Rod is gone.
I think Whitlock is in the rotation options/swingmen category right now. He also has options so he can be bubble as well (though if he continues to pitch as he did in 2021, there's no chance he's ever sent down).I lol’d.
So here’s where we’re at with our 13 arms:
Rotation locks: Sale, Eovaldi, Pivetta
Rotation options/swingmen: Houck, Hill, Wacha, Strahm
Bullpen locks: Barnes, Diekman, Davis, Taylor, Whitlock, Brasier
Bullpen bubble (guys with options): Sawamura, Hernández, Valdez, Bazardo, Seabold, Bello, Crawford, Winckowski
IL: Paxton
Assuming everyone’s healthy, Sale, Eovaldi, Pivetta, Hill, Wacha, Strahm, Diekman, Barnes and Davis are locks to be on the OD roster. We’d only have room for four more arms to hit 13. The most likely of those are Houck, Whitlock, Taylor and Brasier, which puts Sawamura, Darwinzon, Valdez and Bazardo in Worcester to start the year.
More moves coming. Really think Darwinzon’s headed somewhere.
True. Did I miss others in the latest flurry of Red Sox Hot Stove Action!!!(tm)? No love for Matt Strahm???
Can you love an absence of something? I suppose it's possible.
Yes. I mean the Sox had Andrew Bailey and Joel Hanrahan as closers before Koji was given a shot.Agree…. But with most BP arms…. I guess it’s worth it to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. Last year’s worst pitcher can turn into this season’s BP ace and next year’s overpaid flop.
He’s a lock just in the sense that he’s got no options. Could be a DFA candidate, but I think they like him. He’s got a real JAGgy name and profile but was pretty effective last year. Why is Austin Davis a lock to make the roster? He screams DFA candidate to me, and I don't really know that anyone would claim him. He seems to be the definition of fungible.
The idea of Whitlock or Houck pitching in Pawtucket because they have options, and Strahm and Diekman and Brasier don’t, is kind of nauseating.
Well, to be precise, nobody will be pitching in Pawtucket because we don't have a team there any more.I strongly doubt that Whitlock or Houck will be pitching in Pawtucket
