RIP Toucher and Rich Show ... It was fun while it lasted

The recaps aren't as much fun when the people being interviewed know what they're being interviewed for, and are mostly just mugging the microphone the whole time. They need to get back to finding the clueless drunks.
The recaps weren't good to begin with, I thought. Then they got worse. Just not a funny bit.

Back when T+R first started in Boston and were on in the afternoons, they were a revelation. The Chili Guy audio alone still remains the funniest ongoing bit of street audio in the history of radio.
Fair enough--I wasn't living in the area at the time. Since moving here, though, they're pretty much the only way to get me to turn off the radio in the morning.

I think it's a combination of the moron drunks and being unable to stand Adolpho.

I agree they're played out now because it's basically just people mugging for the microphone knowing they're going to be on the radio. I'm not a huge fan of them but they still make me chuckle now and then and are better than anything else on the radio in the mornings.

But back when they started, they would interview people who were either complete nutcases (Chili Guy, Blash) or just hammered out of their gourd ("Recap, recap, recap them Boobies!") and were legitimately innovative, new, and hilarious.

Every now and again they come out with a fantastic nugget like Bruins playoff run last year, "Top shelf, where my mother keeps the peanut butter and I keep my pornos." or this years "I will fuck you all in succession." Now, I'm sure she trailer trash, but it was still a funny clip.

But overall, it is the worst part of T&R, I'm just glad they got rid of the Ask A Pink Hat segment because I can't beleive anyone going to the game is as dumb as those girls were pretending to be.

I'm not sure they're done with Ask a Pink Hat - they've just been very Bruins heavy. And maybe I just want to believe, but I think most of those chicks were serious.

I still love the drunken Bruins recap. Can't believe all the hate. Just the other day when that kid went off on Adolpho for asking who the fireworks were for I laughed my ass off. I can't imagine listening to anyone else on the morning drive. Certainly not D&C.

Toucher getting excoriated for complaining about maybe having to work on Saturday for the parade was funny radio.

If they took the 4-5 they do per game down to 1-2 and only picked the best I think they'd be a lot better. The fireworks guy was funny, the succession girl, the Dora the Explorer guy, etc. but a lot of them just aren't funny and get old. I'd rather have them go back to people like Chili & Faster than just random college guys.

Very cool to see T&R get a spot in the parade. They were talking hockey on WBCN (long before the Sports Hub--See Aaron Ward and Brad Boyes) while WEEI flat out ignored hockey and mocked Bruins fans. IMHO they earned that spot.

They are doing a drunken recap now?? T&R were saying something about how EEI was bashing them this morning about being in the parade on a boat, etc. Then Fred just started crushing John Dennis and WEEI.

Wait...so you mean it's possible to host a popular morning radio show AND have your listeners actually like you? This goes against everything that D&C have built their brand on over the past decade.

John Dennis and Gerry Callahan have become irrelevant to every non-conservative under the age of 54. If somebody stil says that they "listen to D&C every morning," it tells me a lot about their character, and it says nothing good...

I have no idea I looked on ITunes earlier and one of their podcasts said "Iggy hits the streets" or something like that...I was curious if anyone actually listened to it.

Some how I missed all of this, what's going on?
I haven't heard today's show yet, but on Friday it came up that 'EEI was doing street interviews a la Adolpho's drunken recaps and the two of them just went off. Fred is at his absolute best when he's just railing on D&C/'EEI. They were ripping the station as a whole for pretending that hockey didn't exist, then marginalizing Dale Arnold (never mentioned him by name), and now having it blow up in their face (and also for copying their bits when that's not what EEI's audience wants to hear). It was fantastic stuff - I believe it was in the second hour if you want to pull the podcast off of iTunes.

Not to defend D&C here because I never listen to them and don't care for their politics but it's not like Toucher and Rich invented the 'weird guy on the street interviewing drunk people' bit either.....

That being said it's not going to work on D&C. Nobody is going to prefer that to adolfo's squeaky questions and rich's production on the drunks coupled with fred's commentary. That's what makes that bit work, and let's be honest, it's barely even working anymore. In fact, if there was ever a time to retire the drunken recaps this is probably it. T&R are talented enough to come up with something fresher, whereas D&C are resorting to ripping them off.

What Callahan and Arnold were talking about today was the fact that quote "Channel 7 anchors were wearing Bruins gear and acting like a member of the team. " In their opinion, they did not think that the non play by play broadcasters or analysts should be on a float or acting like a team member. Arnold & Callahan thought that the newscasters should stick to reporting the news and not engage in rooting because it violates journalstic integrity. They did not mention T & R by name. Personally I am surprised Callahan knew how to pronounce the word integrity but I do not think he is totally off base in this instance . In regards to T & R, I think Arnold and Callahan were wrong because Toucher and Rich defintely earned the right to be on the float. However, it is somewhat ridiculous to have some news anchor who a month ago would not know a hockey puck from a baseball, suddenly act as if he/she is some big Bruins fan.

This morning on the ride in proved what Toucher and Rich completely own Dennis and Callahan. During a commercial break about 30 minutes ago, I flip over to EEI for the hell of it. Dennis is bitching about Nike being pro-drugs (my term)becaue of the T-shirt controversy, while Callahan surprisingly enough gets what Nike is saying.

I flipped back after 30 seconds and proceed to laugh my ass off in the car while Fred is ragging on himself and being ragged on for a whole segment about giving his credit card to some foreign lady over e-mail in order to purchase a Paddle Board that he will probably use twice. Plus he paid about $1000 for a $600 board, not sure where the other $400 went. It was the hardest I have laughed in awhile.

I have to agree with those that think Wallach is useless though. They clearly are not interested in any serious analysis of sports and they don't let Wallach really chime in anyway on actual sports stuff and of course as well they shouldn't because he isn't that smart. They should can him and bring back Crash, or have him on the DA show or something.

I'm glad you mentioned the bolded part. There was a time about 6-8 months ago I think where they let Wallach talk too much and the show ground to a halt every time they gave him more than 20 seconds of air time. It really brought the quality of the show down IMO and it is much better now that they have reigned him in and reminded him that it is Toucher and Rich, not Wallach with Toucher and Rich.

I'd be interested to find out what Wallach really thinks though, he is the ultimate Rodney Dangerfield of Boston Sports Talk Radio. He was useless on Dale and Holley and is still useless to T&R, kind of amazing that he has lasted as long as he has.

Dave Goucher doing play by play for The Karate Kid and Rocky IV was great. Although, I would have loved to hear Jack Edwards do the play by play for "sweep the leg"

Wallach is probably stilled pissed he wasn't on the duck boat. It was Fred that told Wallach to shut up. Usually happens 2-3 times per show.

Yeah they have no issue telling Wallach to shut up.

I thought the entire paddle board bit was absolutely hysterical and vintage T+R. Fred really is extremely funny when he just goes off on his tangents, and his total self-loathing makes it even better.

I guess I was mostly annoyed when the actual expert, Sean McAdam, told T&R to go screw with their Drew theory (he was nicer than that, but essentially that was his message) and Wallach's contribution is to do a one-liner about how Theo regrets buying Drew the way Fred will regret his paddle-board. Except the only way this analogy works is if Fred actually really enjoys his paddle-board (Theo has never expressed any buyer's remorse about Drew) and gets a lot of use on it (Drew was great player for two years and 2 playoff series and a good one for another year and a half and 2 playoff series...he was really only bad the first half of 07, the Angels series in 07, and the last two months), and then maybe at the end of the day it was only worth an $800 investment instead of a $1000 one (I think it is fair to say the deal was one year too long given Drew's age at the time of the deal). It's fine for a couple of guys having fun to think Drew has sucked and was a complete mistake, but if you are the actual "expert" and your only purpose in life is to bring a little knowledge, then stop trying to be so fucking cool and be one of the boys and actually give some fucking knowledge. Jesus fuck he is useless. Oh and please, since I am using my leftover hate, stop with the fucking making up stupid hypothetical conversations "yeah I'm just saying WHAT IF Tim Thomas had given up goal xyz then what would you be saying?" SHUT THE FUCK UP.

(I agree the paddleboard thing was funny anyway).

Their "pink hat" style quiz today, where Dave Goucher did play by play for movie scenes (Slap Shot, Karate Kid, Top Gun, Rocky IV, The Untouchables), and the caller had to guess the movie, was just amazing. I could listen to Goucher calling "Sweep The Leg" all day.

I really love this show, but Fred's ranting about bars not losing money and whining about Rich being a bleeding heart liberal was sad. Every point Rich brought up, Fred shot down with an "Ugh" or a "Pshh." He never had a real point or ever said "Oh well, that's a decent point." When you're in an argument and you can't see one point your opponent is making, you're probably being irrational.

Putting together a blog post on spring Arbitron #s. Toucher & Rich had an 11.6 share (1st) in the spring book m25-54. D&C: 6.0 (3d). Wow.

"Jason, we need to see you in our office. Now."
I'm sure D&C will have something to say about this. "it's not our fault, they only had that # cause of the Bruins. If you add in El Paso Texas, we're still #1! We're also #1 with men we care about, 65-90!"

Not that I'm unhappy to see WEEI taken down a notch, but isn't there a big inherent advantage on FM vs AM?

There has to. Driving this morning, I turned on Toucher and Rich (like I always do) but during commercials I flip. Part of my rotation is WEEI but I hardly ever stop long because the signal, frankly, sucks.

I cant be the only one that does this.

The thing is, I would listen to D and C a little more during the Sox season especially. Not that D and C is great sox talk, but T and R really lack solid baseball talk imo. I never "flipped" during the B's play-off run. When Wallach is their "go to" baseball guy, there's a problem.

Though, I do enjoy Mcadam.

I agree WEEI sounds awful. If the sports hub was in AM I probably wouldn't listen as much. However didn't see, to bother WEEI for the 20 years they were number 1. If WEEI was in Hd I still wouldn't turn it on.

Wasn't that always the knock for supposed competition against WEEI back in the day , though? That competitors' signals were awful compared to 'EEI?

Seems convenient for EEI to be using that as an excuse now. Besides, it's not like the numbers were close. They got slaughtered.

Trying to remember. What were the circumstances surrounding Wallach leaving WEEI? I know he's not very knowledgeable, and rather annoying at times but he was the only one to make the jump when TSH launched and he's def. gotta be feeling good about the decision*

*if the decision was, in fact, his own
